Don't let Bruce's diversion distract you from Totten's weird guitar routine (and calling it weird is the polite, sympathetic characterization).

Oh my I just saw that on FB and was going to ask about it.
Is this recent?
Hope Bruce wasn't hurt.
The guy behind the guitar player was beyond creepy.

Not a fan of the guitar routine. Did not enjoy seeing it at the show I attended recently.

:lol

Kinda shocked he still does this these days. I love how this video almost seems choreographed in it's ridiculousness. Totten is doing this squatting shuffle behind this woman (clearly the video from Japan from years back of the cheerleader grinding on him has shamed him into including a buffer zone between him and the woman while doing this routine)....making it even more ridiculous is that there is, what looks like, a 12 year old kid happily dancing 2 feet behind this bizarre spectacle. Mike is doing some line dance with Bruce...of which the fancy footwork are just too much for Bruce to handle, sending him tumbling backwards (props to the camera man/woman for getting all this). And finally the hand reaching out to Bruce from the audience has the scariest fingernails I've ever seen. You just can't make this up.

What?! :D Anyone got a clip of that?

I have no idea when this was captured. I have a vague recollection of seeing a video like this a few years ago, so I'm not sure how recent this is. Can't really see other band members that might help ID this much. That Leago dude is there in the back, and he joined around 2015 or 2016 as I recall.

This is a common Totten routine. There are a number of pics. Here's one other from, I believe, late 2016 (I think this one is Mike's daughter, which I'm not sure paints it in a better or worse light):

Looks like he's going out of his way to show Mike that he's not looking down... though I believe Dennis invented that move with one of her siblings

And there has been some debate over the years about this guitar routine with a "fan." I don't think Totten has any sketchy motives or anything. It just seems tacky and increasingly inappropriate.

One fan I recall some time back opined that it was just a case of giving a fan a little musical/stage thrill. My response was, how many photos or videos are there of Totten doing this precise guitar routine with a male audience member?

This video is at least a year old. I remember using it for something last year

Sheesh, can't believe how bothered some people are over this. I hope they never say Paul McCartney playing a girl like a guitar in Help!

Sheesh, can't believe how bothered some people are over this. I hope they never say Paul McCartney playing a girl like a guitar in Help!

Except those things aren't comparable at all. The woman in "Help" was presumably an actor/extra hired for the job. Also, McCartney didn't do this multiple times in every Beatles film and on stage for years and years. And he's also not grinding into the back of the female. Indeed, part of the gag in "Help" is that it's kind of an awkward, uncomfortable thing he's doing; he even pulls a face near the end of the *short* bit when he's worried he's grazed the woman. That all being said, no, it's not exactly the most progressive thing the Beatles ever put on film. I'm not one to dig up ancient stuff like that and judge it; I don't have a problem with it given all the proper context. But I also don't have a problem saying, with hindsight, literally objectifying someone in a bikini and playing them like a guitar while they stand their limply isn't exactly a shining moment. But it's not a big deal given proper context. It's of its time, and clearly just meant as a quick sight gag.

This thing that has been happening for years on "Beach Boys" stages is different. And indeed, if those who have followed this for years are correct that Totten is now comically trying to still do the bit while "un-thrusting" his body away from the female in questions, it tends to indicate an awareness that it might just be problematic to grind right up against someone to do this circus sideshow bit.

Now, one of my issues on this has more to do with, in the past, some fans trying to contend this is nothing more than a chance to give "a fan" a cool experience on stage and kind of pretend like they're playing guitar. That's where I've posed the question of how often Totten does this with females versus males, and how often he does this with younger females versus older females.

As usual though, this is another case where I'm not hugely outraged and apoplectic about it. I'm just saying if someone brings it up, I'm okay pointing out that, *in my opinion*, the bit is kind of gross and skeevy and the whole thing contributes to a sideshow-ish, absurd stage presentation for that portion of their show.

September 1 Mike & Bruce Beach Boys gig - they did the guitar bit again as per the usual (I'm assuming this is done most every night).

I'm actually surprised. This time, Totten did call up a male in what seemed to be his mid-50s, and.....

Actually no, it was a young female again...

To be clear, let me reiterate that I have no reason to believe Totten has any nefarious motives. But I also think the optics of this are and have been pretty gross for a quite awhile. And, while I'm happy to assume the motive is just to do a fan-friendly bit at the end of concerts, I would say it's not coincidental that a dude rarely if ever gets called up for Totten to put between himself and his guitar.

I'm not sure why turning the end of the show into a circus act with fans all over the stage singing and dancing isn't enough.

Even Mr. T back in 1985 kind of attempted to play the drums:

Now, if Jimmy Page showed up totally wasted to another Beach Boys gig, then maybe somebody *should* step in between him and his guitar....

Well, this kind of stuff didn't start with the Beach Boys. When I saw Chuck Berry and Little Richard back in 1995, they both called people up out of the crowd to get on stage and dance. With Richard, the first time he did this, it was the kids he wanted - for Itsy Bitsy Spider. Later in the show, he invited a bunch of ladies to get up and dance. Chuck did the same thing at the end of his set.
And last year, I saw Cheap Trick invite some very very young girl fans to come up and sing Surrender with them. Yeah, maybe it looks cheesy or stupid to a lot of us, but i'll bet those girls had something to talk about for a long time after that concert.

My point was mainly that there is a difference between simply inviting fans on stage to sing versus a guitarist placing someone (which always seems to be a young, attractive female and never a male, nor an older female or male, nor a female or male who isn't relatively slender)  between themselves and their guitar, forcing them to wrap their arms around the person to play the guitar, and either requiring the guitarist to thrust themselves up behind the fan or, as comically appears to be the case now, excessively squat and "un-thrust" in the opposite direction to avoid the guitarist grinding their front into the back of the fan.

I get it, it's a way to make a fan who doesn't play guitar feel sort of like they're playing guitar. I guess. But it just looks skeevy, especially because it’s always only one type of fan who gets this “experience.” If you really gotta do some stupid guitar show-off bit, then play the guitar on top of your head like Jimmy Vaughan or something. I think even Foskett used to do that.

Again, not an earth-shattering complaint or anything. But if someone looks at that and just shrugs or thinks it’s absolutely normal, they’re (obviously) entitled to that opinion, but I don’t mind pointing out both as a spectator/fan/student of the band and its history, and someone with basic observational skills and some modicum of a sense for what seems okay interpersonally (not to mention simply PR-wise), that in my subjective and objective view, this guitar bit is dumb and inadvisable. And that’s putting it politely.
