Title: The Lettermen
Post by: feelintheflows on May 18, 2019, 03:19:12 PM
I knew of the lettermen but never heard of their songs. I stumbled upon their vocal version of Theme from A Summer Place. Wow. I’m listening to it over and over. It’s a shame The Beach Boys never did that especially between 1963-1966. They would have been perfect. Thoughts on the lettermen ?

Good call, ftf. Their gorgeous version of "The Way You Look Tonight" is one of my earliest memories of listening to Radio Luxembourg:

I saw them in the early 2000's at one of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame shows. My grandpa went to school with and is good friends with Tony Butala.

They are fantastic! Check out their version of "The end of the world".

And see this thread for a great lesson in harmony by the Lettermen:

Well, of course the Letterman are one of the greatest vocal groups of all-time, very MOR, very white. The Association I think would also be in that group.

Sadly, The Association tend to be rather unfairly lumped in with the MOR brigade, a result of folks only knowing The Greatest Hits collection, or the Bones Howe produced era. If only they would look beyond early '68 and check out The Association (aka Stonehenge) from 1969, Stop Your Motor from '71 or Waterbeds In Trinidad from '72.
Alternatively, just YouTube 'Pandoras Golden Heebie Jeebies'...
'nuff said...

I didn't mean to imply that the Association was MOR, only that it is the public perception of them. Like the Beach Boys there are a lot of hidden gems on the Association's albums that are unknown to the general public. After their popularity waned they continued to put out some really good albums. However most of their hits, which I really liked are stuff you could hear in a dentist's office, real muzak.
