Title: This Week in BB History-March 29 to April 7
Post by: Ian on March 29, 2019, 07:34:38 PM
March 31 1962 the BBs played at the Ontario California National Guard Armory with the Vibrants.  March 30, 1963-The Beach Boys performed at Denno’s Record Shop in Garden Grove, CA. On Apr 5, 1963-they opened the Los Angeles Teenage Fair in Burbank. The next day they appeared at the Grand Opening of Build 'N' Save in Garden Grove-they played in the parking lot

Mar 28 1964-The BBs played two shows at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.  April 2 1964- The BBs worked on the track for I Get Around-this session apparently saw Brian and Murry have a terrible fight resulting in Brian telling him he was fired. The next day the BBs appeared at a benefit concert held at Whittier High School with Pat Boone and Mahalia Jackson

Mar 29 1965-The BBs recorded the track for Sherry, She Needs Me, though the vocal was not done till 1976.  The next day they worked on Salt Lake City.  Around this time work was also done on the live Chicago tapes from March 26 and 27-sweetening the tracks and mixing them. Ultimately the tapes didn’t officially come out till recently.  April 5 1965 the BBs (with Glen Campbell) played at Melody Land Theater in Anaheim with the Munsters and Pat & Lolly Vegas Trio. The latter group included future BBs drummer Mike Kowalski.  The day after they were back in the studio to work on California Girls. April 7 1965-The BBs taped Shindig with Brian at ABC Studios-they were paid $895 for it. This is the episode with Fun, Fun, Fun, Long Tall Texan, Please Let Me Wonder, Help Me Rhonda and Their Hearts Were Full of Spring.

March 31 1966-The BBs played at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso. Then they played in Dallas on April 1-with the Lovin Spoonful and Chad and Jeremy.  Jim Guercio was playing guitar for the British duo and first met the BBs on this tour.  The same bill played in Fort Worth the next night and then in Houston on April 3.  Shows followed in San Antonio (4) Austin (5), Memphis (6) and Jacksonville, Florida on April 7 1966.   March 31 1967-The BBs worked on Carl’s song Tones (or Tune X) at Hollywood Sound Recorders. April 4-7 1967-The BBs worked on Vegetables at Sound Recorders and at Columbia Studios

March 30 1968-The BBs recorded vocals for Wake The World, without Mike who was still not back from his India trip (he also stopped in London) The next day the BBs carried on without Mike and worked on Be Here In The Morning.  Mike was back on April 1 to complete vocal work for Meant For You, Be Here in the Morning and Wake the World. On April 3, 1968-they probably worked on Be Still.  The BBs then flew to Nashville for their big southern tour with Buffalo Springfield and the Strawberry Alarm Clock that was to start there the next day.  Brian spent the day recording Transcendental Meditation-apparently all by his lonesome.

When the BBs arrived in Tennessee they found out that Martin Luther King had been killed. This led to riots in numerous cities and these cities created mandatory curfews and urged people to stay home.  The show in Nashville was canceled.  The bands all hung out at a Holiday Inn all day.  They did manage to play a campus gig on April 6 1968 at East Carolina College in Greenville, NC but the evening show in Raleigh was canceled. A fan recalled, “Since they couldn’t travel to Raleigh officials allowed the bands to continue playing for an extended concert. The three bands jammed together.” The next day the BBs played a campus gig at Clemson University but again the evening show in Greensboro was canceled.  A lot of nights at the hotel: fooling around and losing money.

Mar 29 1969-The BBs appeared on the syndicated TV show Boss City, which aired in LA on KHJ TV and was hosted by DJ Sam Riddle.  They performed “I Can Hear Music.” I assume this footage has been erased. Two days later they were in the studio working on Breakaway with Brian.  On April 2 1969 the BBs were in Philadelphia to appear on the Mike Douglas TV Show with Shirley Bassey, Hal Frazier and Glenn Ford.  They sang live vocals over canned backing on I Can Hear Music and amazingly enough- Never Learn Not to Love.  The tape of this show is in existence, though oddly it has never been used in any documentary. Great footage! That same day Brian worked on the track for Breakaway

On April 3 1969 the BBs played the Dome in Virginia Beach with the Classics IV. The next day they played a morning concert at a Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and then performed an evening gig in Tampa with Classics IV, Tommy Roe and Joe Hicks.  The hospital show was something of a calculated move. It was one of a number of benefits on the tour booked to aid Carl’s draft case.  Brian explained to Bernard Barry of Disc & Music Echo, “It’s a kind of unofficial way of the group paying off our debt to the American government for allowing Carl to become a conscientious objector.  A few concerts here and there is the alternative to him emptying some bed pans in some hospital to substitute for military service.”  On April 5 they played in Miami and then on April 7 they were in Daytona Beach with the Crazy Elephant, Joe Hicks and Shadows of Knight.

Apr 2 1971-The BBs played at Porterville College in California -with The Flame. The next day they worked on Don’t Go Near the Water, Old Movie (early version of 4th of July) and Long Promised Road for the Surf’s Up album.

March 30 1972 the BBs played at Georgia Tech in Atlanta and then the next night at Auburn College in Alabama. On April 1 1972 they performed at the Convention Center in Miami. The review noted, “With each new selection, the crowd grew more excited and people stood atop their chairs to boogie along with the group. The tremendous applause almost brought the Convention Hall’s ceilings down upon the crowd, and the Beach Boys returned for a brief encore.” The tour ended at Ft Homer Hesterly Armory, in Tampa on April 2 1972. This was Bruce’s last full show as an official BB until 1978 (he appeared onstage briefly in 1973). He left the group soon after the show.  The reviewer from the Evening Independent was unimpressed by the “new” BBs-which now included Toni Tenille, Blondie and Ricky.  “Now they are like all of the other rock groups, not only in appearance but in sound.  They’ve added a few new members to their group, none of which I felt really fits in.  Their new lead guitarist (Blondie Chaplin) was very loud and hard rockish. Their bass player (Jeff Kaplan) was freaky and their drummer (Ricky Fataar) was too basic.  The total volume was extremely loud, out of character, distorting, and nearly covering the rumble of the surf.”  On Apr 4 1972-Brian worked on “Gimme, Gimme Good Lovin.”

March 29 1973-The BBs played at the University of Dayton. The reviewer stated, “Some of the new material is good and in many ways their style has matured-but there’s no getting around it, the audience came to hear the old surf music. Every time they performed one of their old hits the mob of freaks went wild.” The next day they played in Chicago and then on March 31 1973 they were at Notre Dame. I have a photo from this show in my book. They played the University of Illinois on April 1. The reviewer noted, that the crowd got excited when they played “one of the many old hits which the crowd had been begging for ‘Help Me Rhonda.’  They followed that with one more mellow number ‘Let the Wind Blow’ and some more terrific 1960’s songs-‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’, ‘Good Vibrations’, ‘I Get Around’ and ‘Fun, Fun, Fun.’  Both the crowd and the group then reached new heights of frenzy as the Boys played the Rolling Stones’ ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ with a bare-chested Mike Love prancing around ala Mick Jagger.”

The tour then hit Saint Francis College on April 3 1973, St. John’s University and CW Post College on April 4. Harrisburg, PA with Argent on April 5 and Philadelphia with Spooky Tooth and Argent on April 6. They then played Scope Arena in Norfolk, VA with Bruce Springsteen on April 7 1973.  A reviewer noted, “Carl has matured the most since the ‘Surfin Safari’ days… Vocally he seems to have followed in Brian’s footsteps, phasing beautifully with a clear, bright falsetto that would make your ears smile if they could…Jardine, like Carl, has a likable voice which is highlighted on a vivid, satisfying rendition of ‘Heroes and Villains.  (Blondie) Chaplin was in especially good voice and his hard-edged R&B trained style was put to good use on the soul oriented ‘Wild Honey.”

Apr 4 1974-Brian attended Larry Coryell’s show at the Troubadour and allegedly leapt onstage to sing Be-Bop-a-Lula, eventually being ejected by a bouncer.  A wild night for sure! March 29 1975 the BBs played the Lakeland Civic Center-with Honk. The same bill was in Hollywood, FL on March 30. On April 1 the BBs played in Indianapolis and Louisville, KY with Billy Joel. He also appeared with them in Knoxville on April 2 and Atlanta on April 3 1975. The same bill was in Charleston, WV on April 4, Greensboro, NC on April 5 and Charlotte, NC on April 6. According to the Charlotte Observer, “There was wave after wave of Beach Boys standards, from the opening with ‘Sloop John B’ to ‘Help Me Rhonda’, ‘Sail on Sailor’ and ‘Surfer Girl.’  And the crowd which had milled and fretted for part of the opening act-pianist composer Billy Joel, who was onstage for an hour, was on its feet and dancing for the Beach Boys.” On April 7 the BBs played at the College of William and Mary with Honk.

March 30 1976 the BBs worked on the brilliant track for Had to Phone Ya.  Mar 29 1977-Dennis worked on End of the Show for Pacific Ocean Blue. Apr 1 1977-All the BBs attended a press preview party for Love You with Brian in Los Angeles.  Apr 3 1978-Dennis worked on the song Common for Bambu.  Apr 4 1979-The BBs worked on the song Little Girl. April 3 1980-The BBs taped an appearance on the Fridays TV show, which aired in June. They sang Keepin The Summer Alive, Goin On and Good Vibrations- with Brian with Bobby Figueroa on drums in place of Dennis, who was out of the band at the time.  Those that have seen this clip know that Brian seemed really excited playing Goin On-more animated then usual in this mostly down time period for him.

Apr 3 1981-Brian held a session at Gold Star with a number of Wrecking Crew members, though no one knows for what song. April 5 1981-Carl started his solo tour-with Billy Hinsche, Alan Krigger (drums) Myrna Smith, Gerold Johnson (Bass) and John Daly (Guitar) at Park West in Chicago. The Tribune reviewer was harsh.  She commented, “It seems safe to say that Carl should not do anything rash where the Beach Boys are concerned… The accent understandably is on new material. Most of it, unfortunately, is more or less a wash out.  The songs…aren’t awful by any means ‘Hurry Love’ one of several ballads that leaned more to pop then funk is particularly pretty but most are pedestrian and totally unmemorable.” The next day Carl was at Center Stage in Detroit and then at the Agora in Cleveland on April 7 1981.

March 29 1982 the BBs played in Buffalo, NY without Carl.  The Buffalo News noted, "With Carl away, the remaining Beach Boys have regressed so deeply that they barely acknowledged anything newer than their 1968 hit 'Do It Again.'...The delights of this 20th Anniversary set, therefore, were recycled ones. All the surf songs and the car songs were condensed into medleys, a bit like Stars on 45.  For new material, they went for stuff as old as their own-the Del Vikings 1957 'Come Go With Me,' the Ronettes 1963 'Be My Baby’ and Murry Kellum's 1963 'Long Tall Texan.'” The next day the BBs again played without Carl in Providence, RI.

However, Carl joined them, for the first time since February 1981, for the show in New Brunswick on March 31 1982. He wasn’t a happy camper. He commented to writer Geoffrey Himes, “Everything was rushed; it was very mechanical. There was resistance to rehearsing out of habit. But it all finally came together at the last minute.” He also played with them in Halifax on April 1. The reviewer noted, “Early in the performance their voices were strained and hoarse, either from age or fatigue, but as the show progressed, grew stronger. Carl Wilson was the one whose singing ability seemed the least affected by time.” Carl also played the two nights in Merrillville Indiana on Apr 2 and 3 1982. But he was gone by the time the BBs played three nights at Chateau De Ville in Framingham, MA on Apr 4, 5 and 6 1982.  Jeffrey Foskett later declared that the April 5 show was the worst he could recall. “Bruce and I had the flu.  Michael had such severe congestion he really could not sing. I was dueling every one of his leads.  Jardine was so upset with the fact that he couldn't even see the first person in the row because the smoke was so thick. And Brian was off in his own world.  Dennis was there and doing a damn good job that night because no one else was."

March 29 1983-The BBs played at the Civic Center in Augusta, Georgia. Brian missed this tour but Dennis was present-though in ragged shape.  Chris Peacock of the Augusta Chronicle noted, "Despite the night's springtime chill, it was summer inside with the Beach Boys doing their part…The songs ranged from their own 'Barbara Ann' and 'Little Deuce Coupe' to John Fogerty's 'Rockin’ All Over the World' and John Lennon's 'Imagine.'" The next night the BBs played a benefit in Jackson, MS. On March 31 Mike and Dean performed at Ft Walton Beach in Florida for spring breakers and then Mike headed to St Petersburg to play with the BBs on April 1. The reviewer noted, "The most satisfying moments came when rich-voiced guitarist Carl Wilson took over lead vocals from Mike Love.  While performing his new solo single ‘What You Do To Me,’ however, Wilson was drowned out by the musical accompaniment." The following day they played Daytona Beach, FL and were in Sunrise, FL on April 3 1983.
Apr 5 1983-All hell broke loose when Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of the Interior James Watt held a press conference banning the group from playing the Washington Mall on July 4 because the band “attracted the wrong element.” He decided to use Wayne Newton instead. Following shows in Halifax on April 5 the BBs held a press conference in New Brunswick on April 6 to speak out against Watt’s action. They played in Moncton that night and in Fredericton on April 7 1983 with the Nylons.  Bruce Oliver of the Daily Gleaner reported, "The band showed a lot of spirit and did not seem to be at all bored with their material.  They were well rehearsed and in complete control as they presented hit after hit.  Front man Mike Love was personable and entertaining as he led the band. All the musicians had a few golden moments during the set, with drummer Dennis Wilson showing particular verve and taste. The shimmering harmonies that typify the Beach Boys sound were intact."

Apr 1 1984-The BBs, with Brian, appeared at the televised From Hawaii With Love Beauty Pageant at the Waikiki Shell in Hawaii-while there they filmed some odd footage of them all sailing on a boat. The next day-while out at the club Trappers-Bruce convinced Carl to get up and do an impromptu number with Jimmy Borges and the Betty Loo Taylor Trio.  Bruce also did I Write the Songs. They remained in Hawaii to play a private party in Maui for an insurance company on April 5.

March 29 and April 2 1985 the BBs played private shows for IBM at the Westin in Los Angeles.  Around this time they also attended a screening with Brian of the American Band documentary and were interviewed by Entertainment Tonight with their thoughts on it.  April 5 1985 the BBs played West Palm Beach, FL- with America. The next night they played in Jacksonville, FL with The Platters, the Four Tops and the Association and then in Pensacola, FL for a benefit. Think I’ll stop.

I realize it was a bit long this time!

Don't worry about that!

I thought "Old movie" was an early version of "Cuddle up". Was it used as a working title for both songs or am I wrong about "Cuddle up"?
