Title: Compact Disc on the cover of the Light Album.....
Post by: chewy on March 23, 2019, 10:02:07 AM
has anyone ever noticed this, at first i thought it was supposed to be a gold record.................BUT I JUST GOT A 44x42 ORIGINAL PROMO POSTER OF LIGHT ALBUM.......................and its clearly a compact disc with a ring in the center, (im talking about the upper right quadrant of.the cover).............were the beach boys time travelers, or did they just have some inside knowledge of the compact disc which at that point was definetly in development?

Seriously!?!  ::) Compact Discs didn't exist until around 1983.

The band had nothing to do with the individual sections, and each separate piece of artwork was commissioned to some of the then-young and hip LA artists of the time - Drew 'Star Wars' Struzan included. The piece you are refering to was provided by Jim Heimann, so maybe he had some sort of futuristic vision... but I doubt very much that it was at the forefront of the bands thinking back then. Certainly, by that stage in their career, they were far more content to look back at the past...

Without any particular intricate knowledge of the LA album cover or its artists, I'm guessing it's just a random disc or maybe a depiction of a vinyl record.

That being said, *Laserdisc* hit the market in December 1978, and this illustration could equally (I guess) be seen as a laserdisc.

But "LA" came out in March 1979; so I'm guessing the cover art panels were done prior to December 1978, and it's not like Laserdisc was all over the place right when it hit the first markets in late 1978.

I'm guessing LD and CD tech progress was likely documented in trade journals of the era, so who knows.
