Title: Light Album - Alternative take . . .
Post by: BubbaFide on April 24, 2018, 01:14:45 PM
I like the Light Album, but it suffers from a mishmash of musical styles.  I found this alternative light album on youtube.   Just brilliant IMO -

Brian's Back is a truly awful track (with good harmonies), but the total mix you've created is far superior to LA Lights as it was released abck in 1979. I usually put "It's a Beautiful Day" to replace it (even though I realise it was recorded shortly after the album's release). Sumahama might even work better, if just for being an original dud as opposed to a Brian's Back being an uninspired dud  ;D

I don't mind Brian's Back at all. I never minded all Mike's song-checking and Carl's voice just makes this song. Kind of like Kokomo. I mediocre song made better by Carl  ;D

I like Full Sail, but it doesn't fit in the album, sounds more like a song from the Holland album

Love Surrounds Me is like an outtake from a Dennis Wilson solo album.  Shortenin Bread, maybe it's okay if you're on a hallucinogen, but ugh.  It would have been better if CBS had rejected the album and forced them to make more of an effort.

How did Constant Companion not see the light of day as an official release?!?

In terms of production and arrangement, "Full Sail" is VERY 1978/79. Very much the soft rock/yacht rock sound of that era.

Right? I don't love the lyrics, but the groove and the song/melody are killer. I think Dennis could've had a great solo career if things were different around that time.

This is mine:

1. "Lady Lynda"
2. "California Feelin'"
3. "Shortenin' Bread"
4. "It's A Beautiful Day"

Cool mini-album.

I feel exactly the same way, very underrated song that struggles from sitting on a poor album alongside songs that sound jarring against it.
