Title: Where are The Beach Boy fans?
Post by: rickymyfataar on April 07, 2018, 08:56:10 PM
I'm curious to find which States or Cities have the most Beach Boy fans?  I remember Jeff Foskett saying that Southerners love The band slightly more cause there landlocked.
London & Japan also come to mind judging by ticket sales.

Anyone have an insight?

It gets pretty dangerous to start making generalizations about fan bases in different regions unless one has either hard statistics (record sales, ticket sales, etc.) or knows all regions (via working radio, etc.) *very well.*

There certainly have been periods of time when the band has more or less popular in certain regions. As with many bands, they hit a patch where they were less popular in the US but could still get some good bookings in Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, etc.

Any comments Foskett would have made would have pertained only to interest in live shows/touring, rather than overall popularity (back catalog sales, etc.).

As far as within the US, I don't know that there's strong evidence of stongholds in certain areas, at least *this* point in time. There are smaller markets, less metropolitan areas, that might seem to have more enthusiasm for BB shows, but that is sometimes due to having less entertainment options. It may well be that Mike might see more enthusiasm when he books the Grilled Elk Festival in a middle-of-nowhere market than when he books a show in San Francisco or something (though I think it has been quite a while since Mike's band booked a show in San Francisco proper).

I also think it depends on which lineup we're talking about. Mike's band has over-toured to the point where the market has been diluted, which leads to booking the smaller markets, etc. When it comes to something like the C50 reunion lineup, they could have EASILY booked another 100 shows no problem. I'm certain markets outside the US were vastly under-served by the pathetic *23 dates* across Europe, Australia/New Zealand, Asia, etc.

I think it’s a fruitless quest. What’s the measurement? Album sales, ticket sales, airplay? That’s quantitative but imperfect. And as for depth of fandom—how seriously or deeply the music is appreciated—I don’t know how you’d measure that.

It seems like a lot of work for no reason unless you’re in the business of marketing BBs or are really desperate to brag (if you happen to reside there).

There were at least 200 BB fans in Annapolis, MD to see Al two weeks ago.
