Thoughts on this great underrated band?

Underrated. Very.

I only know a few 45s, my favourites being "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" and the peerless "Along Comes Mary".

I dug up some other, albeit brief, Smiley topics on the subject:

Was wondering what "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" sounded like. Just played it - now I remember. Hadn't heard that in 50 years. It is a good song.

This is my contribution to the previous Association thread in 2014:

I was just listening to "Come On In" from Birthday and I don't think I've ever heard anything so joyful and glorious.
I'm only aware of their hits & "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebie", so I went to check "Come On In" based on your description. I don't share your opinion, to me it was a tad monotonous, the main riff isn't joyful, it's groovy rather.
I mentioned "Pandora" since then many times being favorite Association song. It's still the best.

For the longest time I though that these blokes were Brits! Something about the accents...

I knew they're Americans since 1st time listening to "Cherish".

I think that my first knowledge of the Association was through "Along Comes Mary," which, to , had that Mersey Beat flavor, and "...why should I cehhh...but she's not thehhh."

That should read "...which seemed to have that Mersey Beat..."

Love this group.  "Never My Love"  and "Everything That Touches You" are both great songs.  "Never My Love" has always been a favorite of mine.  They have some nice harmonies.

I'm a longtime fan. When I was a kid we had a copy of The Greatest Hits album in our house thanks to my older sister, so at an early age I became familiar not only with their hits, but gems like 'No Fair At All', 'Time For Livin' and 'Like Always'. I was there the first day when Rhino released that 2 CD anthology. I even got a chance to see them live in 1972 on the Steel Pier singing the old hits and promoting their last LP 'Waterbeds In Trinidad' and the song 'Kicking the Gong Around'. I always really loved the weird audacity of this record 'Happiness Is' from the 1967 'Insight Out' album and have made my own tribute to the band:

Another old topic definitely worth dredging up. A couple of years back a friend notified me of this cool album, which I'm revisiting now:

I've always loved the song "Like Always" on that album, particularly the middle section with the incredible vocals.

I'm going to bump this thread because I've been listening to their Greatest Hits album a lot the last week. In addition to the song above, a song I didn't pay much attention to the first time I listened through the album is "Like Always." I'm not sure if I'd ever heard the song before I bought this album, but I have no idea why it wasn't a bit hit. It (and Everything That Touches You) are just breathtakingly brilliant. Brian Wilson caliber, I'd say. Maybe even better.

The entire middle part - the section starting with "Girl ..." - is simply brilliant (it's like a chorus, and a double bridge, and the chorus repeated, or something like that).
