Title: Meant For You a capella/vocal transcription
Post by: Yorick on March 14, 2018, 04:42:27 PM
Does anyone know where I can find the supposedly circulating a capella Meant For You or does anyone have a vocal transcription of the harmonies?

With kind regards,

Yorick van Norden

Hi Yorick,

I've looked around but haven't found anything. If you want the vocals of the officially released version----and if you can wait a few days until I can find the time----I can write them out for you (in the original D flat, I presume) and post them here. Assuming no one else has them, of course.

JK

Dear JK,

Thanks so much for your offer! In the meantime I figured out most of the voices I think and made my own arrangement of it.

greetings,

Yorick

That's good news. Is it to be performed live?

So...how many voices are on that recording?

I'm not Yorick (apologies to that man) but I'd say from the "Meant, for, you" onwards there are four voices. The Ebm7 and Gbma7 chords are clearly four and then the lower three voices sing rhythmic chords below the melody.

But then comes the tricky part. The four-part chords sound double-tracked to me but the next bit less so----unless those two chords use sung overdubs and the rest is artificlally double-tracked. H'mm...

I agree JK, sounds like four voices. After the “meant for”, Al and Mike sing “doo”s in 6ths together, while Bruce and Carl repeatedly sing rounds of the same melody.

Thanks a lot, Zach. Yes, that A flat I keep hearing inside the sixths is the organ. ;D

Reason I ask, is because a few years back I got to hear the session tape as part of my ongoing sessionography research. My notes and memory indicate no evidence of Dennis on the session tape, although he's listed on the AFM sheet (track and vocals for this were cut at the same time - it's Brian on organ, with the piano added by Bruce). BTW, this upcoming April 1st marks the 50th anniversary of this song hitting tape!

Yorick needed the information for an album he made with another musician Anne Soldaat, called Unsung Heroes. That's an album with cover versions of songs by Tim Hardin, Emitt Rhodes, Badfinger Hank Willaims a.o. Meant For You/Be Still is the song on the album and it is lovely combination. Nice album as well. Released this week.

I'm a bit anxious to share this since we can't stand in the shadow of the originals, but here's the medley we made of Meant for you and Be Still:

Ooooh. Yorick, do you have it anywhere else for the non-Spotifiers among us?

"Be Still" is such an underrated song!
