Got time for a quickie before we commence with The Beatles Super Survivor thread? Quote On 19 January 1994 Ono met McCartney in New York, for Lennon's posthumous induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. McCartney presented the award, which was accepted by Ono on Lennon's behalf. That night Ono gave him cassette tapes containing four songs: Free As A Bird, Real Love, Grow Old With Me and Now And Then. Which song do you like better? Tally on March 16 I actually love both of these songs. I first heard them in their demo form on the old Lost Lennon Tapes radio show. While I love Jeff Lynn, I don't particularly care for his production on either of these and I wish George Martin had produced them. On paper, taking two John vocals, and having Paul, George, and Ringo add instrumentation and vocals to them and calling them Beatles songs was a recipe for potential disaster. But, IMO, both songs turned out quite well. But, I think Real Love sounds less forced. Free As a Bird is pretty good, but when the lead vocal lines from Paul and George, I've always thought they were trying a little too hard with that one. I had heard the demo of "Real Love" from the Imagine soundtrack, but "Free As A Bird" was totally new to me. I may be a bit biased, because my first exposure to the song was in the context of a Beatles recording. I love George's bluesy guitar work throughout FAAB, and the drumming is distinctively Ringo at his best. The harmonies are great too. Real Love sounds like a more complete and finished song, lyrically. I would probably vote for Real Love, except for the fact that John's vocal was sped up way to fast. I find it a bit distracting.
