Title: Who played 12 string guitar and Bass on That's Not Me?
Post by: TheWonderfulHarpsichord on August 09, 2017, 08:27:50 PM
I see conflicting sources. Some say Carl played 12 string and regular guitar and Brian played bass and organ. Others says Glen Campbell played 12 string. So who actually played what ?

This is from the The Pet Sounds Sessions liner notes:

3) "That's Not Me"
2/15/66
Engineer: Chuck Britz
Capitol Master #55591-Take 15 is master.
(Dubdown to take 1A was made for two leads and background vocals)

Drums: Hal Blaine
Organ: Brian Wilson
Guitar: Carl Wilson
(NOTE: An AFM contract for this date lists Carl, Dennis, Al and Bruce as having played on this track, but the surviving session tape seems to indicates otherwise. Only Hal, Brian and Carl are clearly audible on the basic track, which includes just drums, organ, one guitar and percussion. It's possible that it's Dennis who is playing percussion; as Brian is in the studio, it sounds like it's Bruce in the booth talking to Carl on the floor. Brian recalls that Terry Melcher played tambourine and Lyle Ritz played a bowed string bass; that bass and everything else...guitar, piano, additional percussion, etc... was overdubbed at a later time. It is virtually impossible to determine who played what.)

The credits above are 20-years old, and have since been proven incorrect in some regards: first off, it's definitely Dennis playing drums on this track, not Hal Blaine. Secondly, the bowed bass that Brian is speaking of was on "I'm Waiting For The Day", not "That's Not Me". Thirdly, a close listen to the track reveals there are actually TWO tambourine parts: one slapped, one shaken. I've heard the entire session tape (not just what's been released and bootlegged), and I'm convinced that the slapped tambourine is played by Terry Melcher, and the shaken tambourine is played by Steve Korthof (Beach Boys roadie and Wilson Brothers cousin). Bruce is indeed providing production assistance over the talkback from the control booth, while Brian plays organ and Carl plays the main 6-string guitar line. Every thing else was overdubbed. One overdub consists of 12-string guitar and Fender bass, the other is a double of the 12-string part and what sounds to me like Dano bass. I believe these are played by Carl and Brian, respectively, on both tracks - I wrote about this at length elsewhere on this board sometime in the past year. Finally, there is a "clackety" percussion overdub by itself on the fourth track - I managed to ask Brian about that, and he says it was Hal Blaine playing a "wooden percussion instrument".

So, the track lineup on the 1st-generation 4-track tape looks like this:

Basic track: organ (left hand, low - bass melody line / right hand, high - chord pad), lead guitar, drums, tambourine slaps, tambourine shake
1st overdub: 12-string lead guitar, Fender bass
2nd overdub: doubled 12-string lead guitar, Dano bass
3rd overdub: clackety percussion

These were then mixed down to a 2nd-generation tape, where the vocals were added.

Very cool to imagine Brian, Dennis, and Carl recording the basic track together. On Pet Sounds, no less! I've been watching those 'Behind the Sounds' videos on youtube, and for what it's worth, they correspond to what c-man just posted. As far as, Dennis on drums and Carl playing both the 6 & 12 string guitar. It mentions that Carl stated in later interviews that he played the 12-string guitar. Anyway, I love That's Not Me :)

That is my belief, yes. Plus Mike, Brian, Carl, Al and Bruce on vocals.

I don't really hear him on this one.
