Any reason why a lot of people have chosen All I Wanna Do?

Any reason why a lot of people have chosen All I Wanna Do?

For me, "All I Wanna Do" was the damascene [sounds like a Mike word!] moment that caused me to fall in love with the Boys' music.

I'd been given Brian's since-discredited "autobiography" as a birthday present in 2003 and, already knowing and loving side two of Surf's Up, went in search of this other album mentioned there in the same breath. After buying the Sunflower/SU 2fer I'd almost given up on it (!!) when "All I Wanna Do" kicked in. I was sold, hook, line and sinker.

I love that song as much now as I did when I first heard it. But it's not something I could explain. Music does what it does.

Nice choices. I'd count Good Timin' as one of my favorites too. For me it's their last truly classic song written by Brian.

Not something I'd given much thought, other than Don't Worry Baby ALWAYS being number one.

1. Don't Worry Baby
2. Surf's Up
3. This Whole World
4. California Girls
5. Here Today

There is little doubt that there are no greater recordings in the history of mankind than the following...
   Sail On, Sailor
You Need A Mess of Help to Stand Alone (I'm serious)
   Wouldn't It Be Nice
   Little Bird
   This Whole World

That is all...

Though there are times when I think the version of "Don't ya Just Know It" by Jan Berry and Brian beats them all!

Title: Re: Top 5 Favorite Songs
Post by: mtaber on June 02, 2017, 08:05:59 PM
And "Love Is A Woman" (Brian's live version on Saturday Night Live) occasionally is in my head from the moment I arise...

Title: Re: Top 5 Favorite Songs

"A Day in the Life of a Tree" actually is my favorite song.  Ever...

Title: Re: Top 5 Favorite Songs

But "Good Vibrations" is better than anything on my prior 35 lists.

As others have said, it's tough to pick only 5...

Please reconsider. ;D

Cool, Cool Water (yes that is my favorite BB song)
Heroes and Villains
Cabinessence
I'll Bet He's Nice
Your Summer Dream

But like many who have already posted, these rotate in and out with a handful of other songs.  I had a hard time eliminating Surf's Up, When I Grow Up, and All This Is That from the list.

Especially Carl's "cookie monster" lead vocal! One of the most "un-Beach Boys" Beach Boys tracks, but certainly one of the biggest highlights of the CatP album!

Nice list, Marty!

It took half-a-dozen listens back in '72, but "Mess of Help"--as it's impossible for anyone to "don't know it" who's braved my many posts here about it--has been in my Top Five ever since. Other great tracks come and go from that list, but it always remains.

(Still want to hear the full "Beatrice" lyrics before I kick the bucket, however...)

Found these lyrics said to be from "BFB" posted by someone called [deleted]: "she's got some wholes [sic] in her stockings/she do a whole lot of rocking". Would these be the only known lyrics, if that's what they are? And where would [deleted] have found them? Most curious.

David Leaf first reported a snippet of "Beatrice" lyrics in The Beach Boys and the California Myth that go a bit beyond that couplet, and which probably explain why Jack Reiley was quick to amend them:

She got a hole in her stockin'
She do a whole lotta rockin'
She do the shake down at Bumbles
She do the Chicano rumble
(presumably: Ba ba ba ba--ba ba ba ba ba <Belief I cried/Ain't no shuck'n'jive>
[It's] Beatrice from Baltimore <I need a mess of help to stand alone>)

The mind does boggle as to where Tandyn and Brian might have taken it from there...  :3d
