Title: The Beatles Survivor #8 Winners: I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND & I FEEL FINE
Post by: pixletwin on May 08, 2017, 07:45:12 PM
The odds and ends collection. That label can be misleading since both volumes have some very VERY important tracks.

We will only include tracks from the collection which were recorded between 1962 - 1966. We will not include the German versions of "She Loves You" or "I Want To Hold Your Hand".
additionally we will include the 1965/66 tracks which can be found on Vol. 2. We will split the remaining tracks down the middle and create two tribes. The "Mersey" tribe and the "London" tribe. Each round we will vote off a track from each tribe.  I also shuffled "I Call Your Name" into the London tribe because it fit that aesthetic more.

Past Masters was originally issued as two separate CDs Past Masters, Volume One and Past Masters, Volume Two, on 7 March 1988. The two volumes were included in The Beatles Box Set. A double LP set, titled Past Masters, Volumes One & Two (also titled simply Past Masters), was subsequently released in the US on 24 October 1988 and in the UK on 10 November 1988.

The double set was re-released on CD, titled simply Past Masters, on 9 September 2009, as part of the remastering of the original Beatles catalogue, and was included in The Beatles stereo box set. This release includes stereo mixes of both "From Me to You" and "Thank You Girl", whereas the original 1988 issue contained the two tracks in mono. The The Beatles in Mono box set, released at the same time, includes the album Mono Masters, which contains a similar track list of dedicated mono mixes.

My vote for least favorite from Mersey Tribe is Matchbox. Great Carl Perkins. Not so great Ringo vocal.

My vote for least favorite from London Tribe is Bad Boy. I think it's pretty terribly recorded and Lennon's vocal is slightly embarrassing.

Mersey - This Boy

 :o wtf!  :lol

I feel bad for Bad Boy... would have fared better in Mersey Tribe. Lennon's vocal kicks ass!

Mersey: Matchbox
London: I'm Down (If I didn't love the backing vocals in I'm Down so much this would have been a much easier choice)

So glad you're doing the Past Masters, as one of my very favorite Beatles songs was not released on an album, but was a B side of a hit.

Anyway, my picks are

Love Me Do - have never cared for it, no matter the drummer

Bad Boy - wasn't even sure what this song sounded like. Listened to a bit from a Beatles tribute band, then remembered. Ugh, that song.

Will add that if Bad Boy gets knocked out, it will be really hard for me to pick the next one in the London Tribe, as I really like all of the remainder.

Did you hear it by Ringo? His voice fits the song & you may like the "hard rock" guitar sound. :3d

I dont recall a Ringo version.  Was that as a solo artist, or an alternate version?

Travelin Wilburys with Ringo guest drumming I think is what she is referencing.

I remember watching that special when  it aired. Some  of the performance were good. Others were embarassing. Sean Lennon did Dear Prudence if I recall, and it was pretty good for the time.

I'm glad "Slow Down" with pedestrian John vocals gone. Bye! :)

"Thank You Girl"
"I Call Your Name"
Slow Down is a cover. It wasn't written by any member of the band.

True,  but I think she was just talking about Lennon 's vocal being weak, not the strength of the song

Yes I know. It's done for balance sake.

Now I'm curious - do we vote against 2 songs till the end, i.e. Final Round would be 2, not 3 songs?

No, meant do we vote against 2 songs, i.e. is it soon when we vote against single song? In special BBs Survivors, we went with 2 tracks, then towards the end it shifted to single song ousting.

We will do this like normal rounds.

Mersey: From Me To You is iconic, but not a survivor track.
I Wanna Hold Your Hand is synonymous with "British Invasion" but....

I love the chords and the energy of She Loves You. So that gets my vote for SURVIVOR.

London: I didn't want Paperback Writer in the top 3, so obviously I'm not voting for that... I feel fine is great too. But it's not top material IMO.

I love RAIN. I love the lyrics. I love the production. I love the backwards vocals. It's everything that is great about Revolver condensed into one track.

Final round. CHOOSE ONE TRACK from both Mersey and London that you believe deserves to be the SURVIVOR!!!!
Then we pick between the 2?

Fun idea. But I think after this I am ready to move on to Sgt. Pepper.

Quote

Not enough Me to get You through. (1 vote (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)) and only 5 of us Love You. (5 votes (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif))

The song which rocked the Mersey side the hardest between 1962 and 1964 was...

I  W A N T  T O  H O L D  Y O U R  H A N D

and between 1964 and 1966 the song which had London swinging the hardest was...

I  F E E L  F I N E

To begin, I'm very happy that "Paperback Writer" got to the FINALS! Yahoo! :3d

Then, really glad to see "Rain" didn't win. :)  Ditto "She Loves You".

Now, with that speech, we can move to Sgt. Pepper. :bw
