This time, with a kind permission of pixletwin, we're gonna select 12 songs that make the album by that popular 'Survivor' style. I vote for Where Is She and Back Home. I love these songs, but they weren't ready for release on Sunflower in the summer of 1970. And I am generally a fan of Bruce's songs on BB albums. This one's my least favorite of his BB tunes.
I do not get the dislike for Seasons in the Sun. I think it's a KILLER tune. I was unfamiliar with the original version upon hearing the BBs' version for the 1st time, so I brought no preconceived notions/feelings when I heard it. Carl gives a great vocal, it has great backing vocals, and it's a pretty joyous type of tune. Maybe it veers a bit into the saccharine Brady Bunch/Partridge Family type of territory, just a tiny bit... but I still love it and really am baffled why people don't think it's a great tune. If I were the one compiling Sunflower in the summer of 1970, which songs would I choose? It's interesting because there were so many songs worked on from Jan. '69-Aug '70 and yet Sunflower (as we know it) is so strong, so what gives? Tears In The Morning is already gone, so Sunflower will be changed. I'm looking forward to figuring out just what I think an ideal Sunflower would have been (if different at all) and making a playlist of it. The method I'm using (that a Japanese songwriter named Sheena Ringo uses for her albums) is that tracks #1 & #12, #2 and #11, etc all the way to #6 & #7 are linked in some way.

I think the big problem with this particular song list is we lost 3 of the ballads from side 2, so you can't do the Today! thing where side 2 is all ballads. And 5 Dennis songs throws the balance off a little bit as well. I've always seen this as the Beach Boys' Abbey Road with good production and feeling like a whole-band production.
