Title: The Beatles Survivor #7 Winner: ELEANOR RIGBY
Post by: pixletwin on April 08, 2017, 10:37:28 PM
This is the album I consider to be the end of the Beatles v.1 (i.e. the moptops).

Quote
Revolver is the seventh studio album by the English rock band the Beatles. It was released on 5 August 1966 in the United Kingdom and three days later in the United States. The album was the Beatles' final recording project before they retired from performing concerts and marked a progression on their 1965 release Rubber Soul in terms of the group's readiness to experiment in the recording studio. The album's diverse sounds include the incorporation of tape loops and backwards recordings on the psychedelic "Tomorrow Never Knows", a classical string octet on "Eleanor Rigby", and Indian-music backing on "Love You To". Reduced to eleven songs for the North American market, where three of its tracks instead appeared on the June 1966 release Yesterday and Today, Revolver was the last Beatles album to be subjected to Capitol Records' policy of altering the band's intended running order and content. Tally on April 10.

Taxman
Eleanor Rigby
I'm Only Sleeping
Love You To
Here, There and Everywhere
Yellow Submarine
She Said She Said
Good Day Sunshine
And Your Bird Can Sing
For No One
Doctor Robert
I Want To Tell You
Got To Get You Into My Life
Tomorrow Never Knows

For the first round I think I will pick Doctor Robert. It just feels like a throwaway song and the fade out always just felt to me like even the Beatles got tired of it.

What's your least favorite?

This album is going to be very hard. But this first round will probably be the only round I don't have to think really hard about it. It's a great song, but

Yes, it isn't great & it's better than YS but they're both good. Playing Revolver tracks, "Love you to" is the worst.

There's definitely going to be a lot of this. Honestly, there are probably only 4 songs on this album that I would be surprised by someone listing one of them in their top 3. Even then, I'd only be remotely surprised and I'd probably think it was cool. Arguably the strongest album 1-14 ever made.

I understand people voting for Yellow Submarine, but it's really annoying me!  ;D I used to kind of dismiss this song when I was younger as "uncool" and not belonging on Revolver, but that same 'me' also considered For No One an after-thought (now I consider it a masterpiece!). It probably wasn't rockin' enough for me as a teen. I also considered I Want To Tell You a bit of a favorite. I connected with it. I still love the guitar lick and Paul's Indian-style vocalization at the end, but now I'm appreciating other songs more. It's funny, I just listened to the album a few times and made a list from favorite to least, but every time I listened to a song I'd look at it's placement on the list and think, "nah, that can't be right" and I'd want to bump it up 5 spot! :lol and I'd just go round and round like that...

I vote for I Want To Tell You. I'm far too mesmerized by George's harmony vocal in Yellow Submarine (and everything else about it). Anyone think it's too uncool for Revolver? I think it's badass to include it! Not to mention Side 1 is a collection of different genres/styles, in that sense it fits. And it's iconic...

I will resume the fun picture posting as soon as Doctor Robert gets voted off. It's a great song, but I'm pissed that I Want To Tell You got voted off so early and I genuinely think it's Doctor Robert's fault. Didn't give that song the right medicine.

Got To Get You Outta My Life

I really do like this song, especially 1:49 onward. Love the guitar that comes in. My only problem with this song is that I sometimes find the trumpets/saxophones irritating. They are distractingly prominent in the mix. I don't think I noticed it as much until I started listening to the mono version, because in the stereo version they are panned to the right. The mono outro is longer and more painful. Which is too bad because it's cool hearing some Paul vocals unheard on the stereo version.

Can't believe you folks dump such positive bright jazzy song with cool backing track which Paul sings with energy. Can any of you tell what's so cool about "She Said" that you favor it better than this Paul song?

Can any of you tell what's so cool about "She Said" that you favor it better than this Paul song?
1. The drumming is some of Ringo's best. Ringo himself was particularly proud of his drumming on this song. It's possibly the prime example in all of rock music of drumming *just slightly* behind the beat, which adds to the sort-of "lazy" feel to the song.
2. Personally, in the bridge ("When I was a boy..."), the descending arpeggios of the guitar play against the vocal melody in a way that sends shivers up my spine.
3. The "call and response" of the vocal line and guitar in the verses just works brilliantly.

Between #2 and #3 this is one of the best interactions between vocals and guitar in all of pop music IMO.

Here we go:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She_Said_She_Said
Quote
"She Said, She Said" is often noted for Ringo Starr's "circular" patterns and other contributions: Starr himself has expressed particular pride in his performances during this era. Some drum enthusiasts have referred to Starr's performance on this track as one of the best drum tracks ever recorded in pop music, comparing the approach to that of Mitch Mitchell, drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience, who was himself a follower of Elvin Jones. Ian MacDonald rates the drumming as "technically finer than [Starr's] other tour-de-force, 'Rain'".

Ok. This is where it starts to get really painful. It's a toss between two great songs. "She Said, She Said" or "And Your Bird Can Sing".... I think Bird is just slightly better because the backing track is a little more interesting for me. All that scale work.

"She Said, I know what it's like to be voted off of Survivor".

Neither should be eliminated at this stage. I actually prefer AYBCS, but think tomorrow is more significant so will say AYBCS.

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #7: Revolver
Post by: RangeRoverA1 on April 27, 2017, 04:46:18 PM
You're kidding? What does it matter if it's significant. If you prefer AYBCS, save it. This is about least favorite track, not the significance & other rubbish.

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #7: Revolver
Post by: Emily on April 27, 2017, 04:54:32 PM
It's complicated. I like some really bad music. I also like some really simple music. Some music, I like just because it's fun. But I like those things as disposables. I could easily do without any of it and replace it with something else just as fun or whatever. Other music, I like in a deeper, more satisfactory way. And it's really important to me. I think Tomorrow was an essential stepping stone for that, while AYBCS is more disposable, pretty as that one line is and fun as the guitars are.

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #7: Revolver
Post by: RangeRoverA1 on April 27, 2017, 04:56:35 PM
Yes I see you're very complicated. So this is about stepping stone, right. ::) Not actual preference.

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #7: Revolver
Post by: Emily on April 27, 2017, 04:57:52 PM
Yes. A preference may not be a favorite. I mean, take ABBA. I may prefer to listen to ABBA song X to  "Surf's Up" on a day to day basis. Because Surf's Up can be a little much - it requires my full attention and I can't dance to it.  But if ABBA song X became unavailable forever, for some reason, it would not affect me much. I'll just listen to ABBA song Y instead.  But if Surf's Up vanished off the earth, I'd have a bit of a meltdown. Because when I do listen to it, it's important.

But this is game. These songs will not vanish. You can easily go listen "Tomorrow". What's the problem if you prefer AYBCS? Pick TNK.

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #7: Revolver
Post by: Emily on April 27, 2017, 05:11:35 PM
Now I'm listening to them. I really like the "of the beginning" part of TNK. It makes the song satisfying.

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #7: Revolver
Post by: RangeRoverA1 on April 27, 2017, 05:19:21 PM

We discuss, I try to figure out why tell stepping stone matters. Is it bad question? Emily said she prefers AYBCS but thinks "Tomorrow" is more important so she saves it. BUT THIS IS NOT about importance of music. It's about PREFERENCE.

Can't believe. Of ALL people single me out. I can't even discuss things. I didn't insult anybody. Your vote doesn't count because Emily was 1st. I still wait for explanation from her.

Goodness. I really didn't mean to start a kerfluffle. Simply, in an easy, fun way, I prefer AYBCS, but I take tomorrow more seriously as part of an important body of music. So in that way, I prefer tomorrow. If I were to pick a real favorite, all things considered, it would be tomorrow because it has more significance to me.
I shouldn't have said anything, of course.

Yes, but you did start it. ::) It could be avoided if you just said "If I were to pick a real favorite, all things considered, it would be tomorrow because it has more significance to me." Without this stepping stone super-duper important stuff.

& I disagree & tbh, don't get your logic. If you like lightweight song & prefer it, what does it matter if the other song you like a bit less is important? That's mind-boggling, really. If I like fun-not fun songs - THAT'S my preference. F.ex. I REALLY-REALLY-REALLY like "At My Window" - BEST BBs song. If it stood against "Surf's Up", I'll EASILY pick AMW & wouldn't care less about importance-significance of the latter.

Nah...you're as entitled to your own views and opinions as much as anybody here. And for the record , I get your reasoning.  If someone had asked me to pick what the better song was between Lahaina Aloha and In the Back of My Mind, I'd *easily* pick the latter. If they'd ask me which I prefer, I'd easily pick the *former*. If it was an elimination styled thread like this one, though, I'd have to seriously think about it and it would not be so easy at all.

i hear what Emily is saying, i think i understand what she means.
it's like comparing 'surfin usa' to 'cabinessence'.  which is better?
surfin usa for it's simple catchy melody and great vocals, or cabinessence
for its full luster of harmonies and vocal parts and intricate arrangements.
your gonna get two sides to that, simple verses complex.
these Beatles songs are difficult to throw out, cause they are so good!

I didn't read it like that. In your case, you can't choose between the 2. In Emily's, she knew right away what to choose but didn't say, instead went on some tangent about stepping stone being deciding point etc.

Taste is subjective. Everybody knows. We musn't be objective about taste & think about some song's importance. Preference is preference. Btw, even that objectivitity regarding TNK's significance is quite subjective. Your significance is my "pretentious song albeit with great Ringo drumming". Yep, that's what I say about TNK.

She said she ACTUALLY prefers AYBCS. But then weirdly still voted against it. Preference is one thing. Significance (TNK) is different. Which is what I tried to clarify. Why it must be shut. I asked valid question. Why not leave it at that & let us discuss it further? It doesn't hurt really.

I have three favorites.  They are by John, George and Paul.  Ms. Rigby ain't in the bunch.  Looks like I may not get my way
without some serious help from the voters.

As much as I love it, I vote for "Tomorrow Never Knows" - a masterpiece for sure, but I see no way
to save it.  The big snore is my favorite, anyway.

Now, will John make it into the final?  Only tomorrow will know.  Don't treat John the way Capitol did.

You're VERY right. It's not masterwork. Big deal, tape loops. ::) Aside from Ringo's cool drumming, it's juuust another Beatles song.

Ok. Which of the four songs left deserves to be in the final three???

I would like to see the top 3 for this album be a battle between John, Paul, and George.

So I will vote off Here There and Everywhere.

You didn't see strong dislike because there isn't any. It's lasted very far on a great album, hasn't it? It's one of my favorite Paul songs ever and it is incredibly beautiful. I'm Only Sleeping, Eleanor Rigby, Taxman, and Here There & Everywhere are my 4 favorite songs on the album and are virtually in a four-way tie for first place. Nevertheless, in the spirit of this game, I've ranked them best I can. The degree of separation is so slight, I can't meaningfully explain why one ranks above the other. It's just instinct.

I like Here, There and Everywhere a lot. It's a beautiful song.
As I posted elsewhere on this forum, sometimes my favorite songs aren't necessarily the "best" musically, but something in them evokes a good memory of when I first heard them. This applies to 2 of the three other songs.

And shouldn't a song entitled I'm Only Sleeping be a "snooze fest"? :-)

Whenever there's been a tie, Pixletwin has said "first NEW vote" will decide. I thought that implied that a previous vote cant be changed. I think that's the fairest way. Bummer if my favorite song gets voted off. Prior to a tie at the end of a round people have changed their vote from time to time.

A pretty hotly contested round. This vote will mean no Lennon songs in the final three. 8 smilers voted to WAKE HIM UP!!!! (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Here we come to the final round. The three top survivors.

Pick which of the remaining three songs is YOUR FAVORITE. Winner takes all and becomes the 7th Beatle Surivor.

Tally on May 8.

Taxman
Eleanor Rigby
Here, There and Everywhere

Round#1 Love You To April 10
Round#2 Yellow Submarine April 12
Round#3 I Want To Tell You April 15
Round#4 Doctor Robert April 18
Round#5 Good Day Sunshine April 20
Round#6 Got To Get You Into My Life April 22
Round#7 She Said She Said April 24
Round#8 And Your Bird Can Sing April 27
Round#9 For No One May 1
Round#10 Tomorrow Never Knows May 3
Round#11 I'm Only Sleeping May 6

Here There and Everywhere was my pick to go for 3 rounds in a row. So I am obviously not picking that one....

Taxman is a valiant effort by George with a great bass line from Paul. If Lennon is to be believed he had more to do with the writing of the song than George ever gave him credit for....

My vote for SURVIVOR goes to Eleanor Rigby. Great string quartet arrangement from Sir George Martin. Superb melody by Paul and, as John said, the lyrics proved that Paul could write great lyrics when he wanted to. Plus the opening shot of Yellow Submarine playing Eleanor Rigby is about as iconic as they come.

It's also cool that there just happened to be graves for BOTH an "Eleanor Rigby" and "Father John Mackenzie" in a cemetery near Paul's home.

I subscribe to that notion, but he had a lot of help on this one. Ringo's "darning his socks" line is my favorite.

Eleanor Rigby, for the win!

Of these three, I probably play Taxman the most. George is now really in his element.
Have played this song so many times that for a good while, when remembering who's the present PM of the UK, I would immediately think "Wilson? Heath?"

However, as much as I love that song, the best of the bunch IMO is ELEANOR RIGBY.
Probably the only Beatles song to bring tears to my eyes. One of Paul's very best efforts.

"Eleanor Rigby". It's beautiful, poetic & really makes you stop in tracks.

His dot post was voting 2nd time, now with "Here There & Everywhere". He somehow took it to mean that pixletwin arranged separate round, to choose between the 2. I explained to him it's still the same round. & showed him his earlier choice.
Watamushi, did I say it right?
Right.

This is what is right.  Cotton Insect (Watamushi) tried to change his vote.  Did it in a way to the best of his abilities.  Then was told he could not according to some rule I've never heard of, and I've been playing this game for over three years.

When is a game not a game?  When all the rules are set by only one person.  Makes it more a "Rank the Tracks" deal, per individual.  That can be done elsewhere.

So if I am understanding you correctly, for the sake of simplicity no flips allowed when a tie breaker is called for?

I am okay with that too.
Hmm. Suppressed voter.

No one's vote was suppressed. It was just a misunderstanding. :)

No, I didn't want to change the vote, but I thought it was the new round between Here and Sleeping, and thought I had to vote for one of the two. If not for my misunderstanding, that would never happen. Sorry everyone.

Watamushi, may I ask if your name is a word, and if it is, what does it mean?  (You may answer; "It's my name, you fool." if necessary.)

wata means cotton, and mushi means insect.
Watamushi is a imaginary creature in my imaginary world.  It's not my real name, but all my friends and families know it.
And I usually use it as my username.

Hmm. Suppressed voter.
Why do you say without knowing? You 2 have no idea what happened.

1) After pixletwin's "7 Here / 7 Sleeping" tie, Watamushi weirdly typed "Here There & Everywhere".
2) Then I reminded him that he already voted bringing up his past post during this round, which was for "Eleanor Rigby". He didn't say clearly that he changes his vote & it made me suspicious that he might got mixed up.
3) I pm'ed him further to clarify & he said that he thought that this is another, separate, round between only 2 songs "Here" & "Sleeping". I told him it's not. Hence he edited his post & replied to my explanation - which instead of jumping with your "rule I've never heard of" rubbish, you should've read ::) - "Right".

See? It's precisely what took place. Watamushi can confirm (wait! he DID confirm). It's not cool what the 2 of you say. Esp. I didn't expect from Emily to hint I suppress the voter. Apology imminent.
I'm not sure why you think I didn't know what happened.

Tough one.

Im giving my vote to Taxman.  I love Ms. Rigby, but it feels more like a Paul solo effort.  Its not even my favorite Paul song on the record. That honor goes to For No One.

My favorite Revolver track is probably And Your Bird Can Sing, but didnt have the votes.  Oh well.  Not really a wrong answer.

It sure was a tough one. And I agree with you that For No One is the best of the Paul songs on this album (and one of his best, period, IMO)
Although I voted for "Eleanor" I wouldn't be upset at all if Taxman won. That's a wonderful song. And George would get even better, with the Beatles and especially solo.

Exactly. For No One is as good as most part of Pet Sounds.

Taxman gets my vote for the ones that are left though.

Hope so.  Thanks for putting up with all the squabbling, pixletwin.

Two of my very favorites didn't make the cuts,  "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "I'm Only Sleeping".

I'm not that big a fan of "Eleanor Rigby" - loved the extended version Paul did in the movie, tho.

I love "Taxman"  and won't mind if George wins one.

I am going to vote for "Here There and Everywhere" - one of his very best songs.

Here we come to the final round. The three top survivors.
Revolver is a great album. Each Beatles started to define their own individual personality apart from the group. Once could say that, in a way, this was the beginning of the end.

17 votes spread across the top 3 songs.
One smiler loves Here, There and Everywhere. Unfortunately not everywhere enough. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

7 smilers loved the hard driving rock Rhythm of George Harrison's "Taxman". But, HA HA Mr. Wilson, we don't have enough to win.

The winner with NINE votes is...

E l e a n o r   R i g b y

Round#1 Love You To April 10
Round#2 Yellow Submarine April 12
Round#3 I Want To Tell You April 15
Round#4 Doctor Robert April 18
Round#5 Good Day Sunshine April 20
Round#6 Got To Get You Into My Life April 22
Round#7 She Said She Said April 24
Round#8 And Your Bird Can Sing April 27
Round#9 For No One May 1
Round#10 Tomorrow Never Knows May 3
Round#11 I'm Only Sleeping May 6
Round#12 Here, There and Everywhere May 8
Round#12 Taxman May 8

Join us for Beatle Survivor #8 where we will pick apart the best of the best from Past Master's Volume one (minus the German songs plus a few from vol. 2 from the same time period). I am going to divide this album in two. So each round we will be voting off TWO SONGS!!!!

Are you ready?
