Title: The Beatles Survivor #6 WINNER: In My Life
Post by: pixletwin on March 05, 2017, 09:07:18 AM
The preceding albums were the countdown. Now we are BLASTING OFF!!!

Quote
Rubber Soul is an album by the Beatles, their sixth UK album, and the tenth released in America. Released on 3 December 1965, it met with a highly favourable critical response and topped record charts in the United Kingdom for several weeks, as well as in the United States, where it was issued with a different selection of tracks.

Produced by George Martin, Rubber Soul incorporates a mix of 1960s pop, soul, and folk music styles. The album's name comes from the term plastic soul, which popular African American soul musicians coined to describe Mick Jagger, a white musician singing soul music. It was the second Beatles album – after the British version of A Hard Day's Night – to contain only original material, and was recorded in just over four weeks to make the Christmas market. Unlike the five albums that preceded it, Rubber Soul was recorded during a continuous period, whereas the group had previously made their albums during breaks between tour dates and other commitments. The project marked the first time that the Beatles focused on creating an album as an artistic work, an approach that they then developed with Revolver (1966) and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967).

The album has been included in numerous "best of" album lists compiled by various publications, and is regarded by musicologists as a major artistic achievement that continued the group's artistic maturation while attaining widespread critical and commercial success. In 2012, Rubber Soul was ranked number five on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". In 2013, after the British Phonographic Industry changed their sales award rules, the album was declared as having gone platinum.

This is gonna be hard.

But despite how great of a song it is, it kinda just is the worst song on the album.

My pick for booting off this first round is easy.

The Word.

Blasphemy!

Did you mean to break my heart and watch me die?

I can't vote off What Goes On yet either. I love singing along to John's part and listening to Paul's bass playing. And I truly love that lyric. I always get a kick out of it. This album may very well be the hardest to rank. The quality and production of songs are so consistent, it's harder to parse them. Revolver, Sgt Pepper, and the White Album are stylistically more diverse, which makes it a little easier to rank our preferences.

My vote this round is for Drive My Car. I like John and Paul's harmony. John, particularly, gets a cool tone which compliments Paul's shouting very well. The harmonies only get better, though... Overall, one of the few Beatles songs I don't care much about. Never cared for the lyrics.

There are very few Beatles songs that I hate.
Run For Your Life is one of them.
Cringe worthy lyrics that ruin this album for me

They're not the least sexist lyrics ever but they ruin the whole album for you?

I love that song! Yeah, the words are really mean but I don't care much about words. It's a catchy tune!

Anyway, there are a few songs that could go off immediately but I'll somewhat randomly choose Wait.

To me, there's really only one obvious choice to vote off on Rubber Soul.

Much like the Help record, it's the Ringo sung faux country tune (though this one is an original, and Ringo's first songwriting credit).

What's with people voting song with Ringo lead 1st? Just because he's not Paul & John? So what?

"The Word" is boring big time. I skip it everytime.

Aww! No wonder I never join in these games. "The Word" is my all-time favourite Beatles song.

Even if they'd recorded "The Word" and nothing else, they'd still be the world's second best band.

For me it has nothing to do with Ringo and everything to do with the fact that I just don't like the song. I love Ringo but I'm not going to vote off a song I like better just to give him a break, lol! Ringo's time to shine is coming on future Beatles Survivor :)

I'm not anti Ringo, but IMO, the Ringo leads are easily the weakest songs on both Help and Rubber Soul.

That has absolutely nothing to do with why I voted for 'What Goes On'. I love Ringo to death and I have spent probably over 43 hours of my life verbally defending him from cynical people who don't and never could begin to attempt to understand what makes magic magic. The Beatles were 4 guys, as we all know (whether George Martin belongs in this equation is another conversation), and take any member out and it wouldn't have been The Beatles. Ringo might not have been John Bonham or Keith Moon but his drumming in it's way was just as creative and innovative, just more subtle. For some reason most people can't hear that, but it's easy if you try. But most importantly, Ringo was a Beatle. He was born one. He was the heart and beat of the Beatles.

That being said, 'What Goes On' is just the worst song on the album in my opinion. I only said sorry to Ringo because 1. I feel bad it's his song I'm throwing off the bridge first and 2. just in case he reads this forum as a guest. I don't want him bumbling round his house going "Oh, even Beach Boys fans hate me".

I like the song.  Don't take the lyrics so seriously.  You think John was out looking for her with a real gun?  I never took it that way.  More like, you'll be dead to me "emotionally" - unless you decide to love me (unlikely by that point).  Looking back, it could have been about his crumbling marriage.  He had a tough time staying true, which is front and center in the lyrics of "Norwegian Wood" and "Girl".  I think it was another case of you're gonna lose that girl, help, nowhere man... most of Lennon's lyrics after the boy/girl period were the same - nobody loves me or so what if they do.  I believe he had a hard time living in a spotlight.  John's life was a whirl of feelings by 1965.  Wealth, women, and liquor (and other substances) did him in for the rest of his life.  There was another side of John, 'tho - love, real love.  Which is what he is promoting in "The Word" - he was always a dreamer, never really sure if he should be "Out" or "In", forgotten ("It's Only Love") or remembered ("In My Life").  In the end what we all want is love, the promise of love.  He expressed that very well from "If I fell" to "Grow Old With Me"-

My vote goes to:  "Michelle" - I'll start early to off it.  In the singles only plan, it will probably win.

Okay, okay, I wasn't singling you or anybody else out.  Don't internalize every thing I write.  We're here to have fun.

I forgot to note it did make Song of the Month!  Somebody liked it back then.  Great picture of John promoting a band he liked.  Most people had a hard time understanding that in the 60's.  The Beatles and the Stones were friends, not enemies.  Had a deal where one would not release singles to compete with each other.  Except for the Christmas market, then all bets were off - everybody wanted a Christmas #1.

I don't dislike the song. I like the others better, that's all.
The verses aren't interesting - pretty much just a one note melody.
Maybe I got sort of sick of the song due to oversaturation. For years a local radio station would play part of it when doing the motorway traffic reports.

I have a soft spot for Michelle. Reminds me of my uncle who used to play it in his cover band in the 80s. I was just a kid then but they'd sometimes let me sit at the top of the basement stairs at my Gramma's house and watch them rehearse. My uncle was the singer (and drummer) of the band, and he sang Michelle so beautifully. Not a moo to be heard for miles :)

"Wait" is next. Wish P&J sang the chorus harmonies differently. As is, it's plain bad & lacks energy.

What does picnic wholly mean?

I think they were a better live band than a lot of people give them credit for, but by 1966 they were fed up with it and getting careless.

I mean, take this performance of 'Things We Said Today' from 1964:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFD3GT387uI

And this one of 'She Loves You', to me (along with 'Strawberry Fields Forever') their greatest song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoF-7VMMihA

Maybe it's just me, but there was such a magic when they were on. When they gave it, they gave it all. By 1966 they just weren't giving it.

"Michelle" - Think it would have worked better as an instrumental.  "Wait" is one of my very very favorites on this
album.  Voting off something so good this early in the game is puzzling.

And I have a comment on live Beatles.  If the monitors and sound systems would have been better, even in 1966, they had plenty of
ability.  They had too many live in the studio tracks to say they couldn't play well live in the right setting.  Wind, especially, can change
the way a performance sounds when being filmed from just a short distance.  Films from places like the Poll Winners shows and Shea and
Candlestick all suffer from the conditions they were filmed in.  I don't know about you, but I think the Roof Top performance is damn good.
Produced great versions of great songs.  If you set the mics up right, the wind matters less.

Such a good line, from such a good song. And it's not just the words, it's the way he sings them. With sheer longing.  When John was expressive with his voice, he really could make you feel something.

This round the 5th wheel is "Norwegian wood". John sounds bored & boring. Btw, would like to say "Think for yourself". It's really good song, it should be gone after "If I needed someone". It starts slow then suddenly in the chorus he rushes. It gave cool effect imo.

And Paul is turning every other shade of Blue, red, he'll go lime green, anything
to stop you from voting off his last remaining tune...have a heart pal.You are my pal, right?

i had no idea what he was sayin, but then the straight jacket guys arrived
and then trying to decipher what he was saying it made sense....
u wont see me!!!!!

What??  That's how we lost "You Won't See Me"?  My favorite Paul song on this album!  That gives Rick two That's two! votes.  In the future Rick needs to tell his friend to vote using their own IP Address, And after they join This Forum!  Or is that what you meant when you said "Call a friend"?

What kind of game are we playing here, pix?  And now you get to do away with Paul's songs all together?  Not cool.  Does Rick get two picks in every round from now on?

"Norwegian Wood"/"Norwegian Wood"/ "Norwegian Wood"/ "Norwegian Wood"/ "Norwegian Wood"  If that's all it takes, a joke post, then mine should count for 5.

Guys. He was joking. He posted earlier that round saying he couldn't choose. I highly doubt he heard his neighbor saying that. If he did, so what? it helped him decide. Thats no different then people who can't pick one so they choose a random song. Really it's just a game folks. Have fun with it. I have been voting for the same dang song 5 rounds in a row.  :lol

So unless I missed a post where he actually voted and THEN said he was giving his neighbor a vote... then ok... But I don't see where he voted*. He could believe his dog told him what to vote for all I care.

The "call your friend" line I posted was meant to say "get your friends on SS who don't play this game in here and vote". I didn't mean post votes for your non-SS friends.

Seriously folks.

*Entirely possible I missed it. Let me know. I don't see where he voted this round previous to hie neighbor joke.

First new vote between those two songs will win Round#10.

No voting for neighbors. Repeat votes don't get counted multiple times.

Thank you bringahorse. I know how hard that was for you.  :lol

13 votes in a hotly contested round with only two songs on the chopping block.

8 smilers voted to Drive the Car off the cliff (I have been trying to vote this one off for 5 rounds in a row). (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

REMEMBER, the final three round is for voting for your FAVORITE!!!!!. The song you want to SURVIVE!!!! (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Tally on April 8.

Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
Nowhere Man
In My Life

Round#1 What Goes On March 7
Round#2 Run For Your Life March 10
Round#3 The Word March 14
Round#4 Wait March 17
Round#5 Michelle March 20
Round#6 Think For Yourself March 23
Round#7 If I Needed Someone March 25
Round#8 Girl March 28
Round#9 I'm Looking Through You April 1
Round#10 You Won't See Me April 4
Round#11 Drive My Car April 6

It's a Lennon trifecta (for the most part). All three songs are great classics (on an album FILLED TO THE BRIM with classics).

I love Norwegian Wood. But I don't have that level of attachment to it that I do for the other two.

I LOVE Nowhere Man. It takes me back to Saturday afternoon telly when I was a kid and they would broadcast Yellow Submarine. I always felt really bad for Jeremy pHd and would get a lump in my throat.

But my favorite... perhaps my favorite Beatle song.... Heck, prolly my favorite Lennon song... Shoot. It's one of my all time faves by any artist. The way it was used in the documentary "Imagine: John Lennon" as the end credit rolled brought tears to me eyes. Still does.

In My Life

Norwegian Wood's a great song, and the first song I ever performed (back in my first year of high school.... it didn't turn out too well haha). But it lacks something - which I can't quite put my finger on - which is needed for it to become a classic. Definitely worthy of being in the top 3, but not my number one pick.

In My Life may very well be the best song on the album. But I don't feel it's a great recording - the overly-mellow production ruins the recording IMO. For example, the piano section reminds me of something you'd hear as your call is put on hold for some doctor or something like that. So this song is out of the question as my number one pick.

So to sum it up, my vote goes to Nowhere Man. Brilliant song, and undoubtedly one of the highlights from this era of The Beatles.

With all due respect, I urge you to reconsider your decision on the matter. The best song should be decided on each song's merits rather than whoever happened to write it or who happens to be the most prominent member on the song. In fact, I didn't even think about how John's songs dominate the finals until you and Pix brought it up. Which if you think about it is a testament to the man's abilities and resonance. Regardless, in the grand scheme of things that fact should be irrelevant when it comes to this sort of game.

That's fair, Rei, but voting against Paul's few songs in a row doesn't seem right. Paul's songs give as much merit as John's. John is not be-all end-all in Beatles. ::)

There is no right or wrong. It just so happens that the majority of opinions ran towards John's favor this time. But hey, Paul had a big hand in writing In My Life. So I think you can consider that one half Paul.  ;D

I've always thought the production on In My Life was stellar.  George Martin playing the harpsichord I thought was brilliant.

I agree - that's a great section. However, it's not a harpsichord. It's Martin playing a piano with the tape running at half-speed.

Well, after voting for Drive My Car 11 straight rounds... :o

This is basically a 3-way tie. I'll go with In My Life. I guess.

Revolver is going to be impossible.

I don't think there will be a harder decision for me to have to make, then to decide between Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, and In My Life!!! Incredible. John is my all-time favorite musician and these are 3 of his absolute finest songs. Norwegian Wood has grown on me a lot since picking up the Mono Box last summer (and I always loved it!). I'm not sure the Beatles harmonies ever sounded better than on Nowhere Man and I love the lyrics. I've also long considered In My Life to be one of John's greatest musical achievements. Gotta love that falsetto ending!

So, basically a 3-way tie, but I'll go with In My Life. I think that's the song I'd most consistently choose.

Terrific. John's 3 in the finals. Surprise! ::) Thanks to everybody dumping last Paul's song.

Refuse to vote. See you at Revolver.

Don't worry, Paul will have his time to shine. He simply wasn't as prolific as John during this period. I'm actually surprised that Michelle didn't stick around a little longer. I thought it was more of a fan favorite for some reason. I love those backing vocals. I just zero in on them. What can I say? For me, there's nothing like Beatle and Beach Boy harmony. Nothing.

By the way, isn't John's vocal delivery in the verses of Girl incredible?! The timing of it? John peaked during this era. Truly great.

John was in and about to hit his prime imo.  never thought his solo stuff was
all that great to be honest, apart from a few tunes, but he shines at this point
in the group.

Agreed. I think these 3 songs plus Girl are the apex of his songwriting career, and it's one of the reasons why I tend to think Rubber Soul is their best album (by a slim margin).

Paul, IMO, reached his peak a bit later.

19 votes in this final round pretty evenly split between two songs - which spent much of this final round going neck-in-neck!  :o
