Title: Lonely Days Chords
Post by: Seagull Merlin on February 20, 2017, 06:36:30 PM
Hey guys, I'm really digging lonely days because I hadn't heard it before today but I'm finding a hard time finding chords because I don't think it's on surfer moon. Does anyone know how to play it? I'd really love to have the chords!

Hi, SM. I'm working on it. Are the chords for guitar or piano? It's clearly a piano-driven song and the two hands tend to go their own way at times, which is what makes it difficult. But we'll get there. If anyone else feels inclined, be my guest.

The Boys do it in D flat! Let me know if you'd prefer C or D.

I wish the BBs finished this song! A good team effort from the boys....

Hey! I'd like to play it on the piano and I'm fine with the original key  😊

I'll get it done this week. :=)

I believe the rough draft is ready. I haven't played it (yet) but it looks good.

It's a bit skeletal at times (not surprisingly, I suppose) but you can always flesh it out. I'll upload a "clean" version before the end of the week.

Well, SM, here's my transcription of the accompaniment, in all its primitive glory:

Couple of things:

In bar 4, that 's an E♭in the right hand (not a D♭)
In bar 5, the first note in the bass is a D♭ (not an E♭)
The wavy lines in the second system denote a tremolo-like alternation between the notes of those chords (a typically pianistic device)
In the fourth system, that's an A♭ on the second beat in the right hand (not a G♭)

You may want to play the bass an octave lower, as in the video, for greater effect. (I still haven't got round to playing this!)

Let me know if anything is unclear. Bars 5-7 were particularly difficult to decipher. You may want to revise them somewhat.

Good luck!

Thank you kindly. :=)

In a word, no. I have composed odd things (with emphasis on the word odd) but I'm more suited to playing the music of others. That said, I've just left my most recent band and am pondering my next move. Which may turn out to be just doing one-off things like this.

I just love your username!

Odd sounds good  :)  Yeah, I found the username in a football article recently. Just thought it was ridiculously silly and appealed to my sense of humour.

I found that article, which is pretty hilarious in itself:

[Ireland's team manager Eoin] Hand made the first of two trips to England to sound out English club managers about the availability of their players. At Manchester United Ron Atkinson, when asked about Ashley Grimes, Kevin Moran and Frank Stapleton, said the FAI could “f**k off”. “I told him I needed his official response,” recalls Hand, “and he said: “F**k off, that’s my official response.” :lol

But to nickname the General Secretary of the Football Association of Ireland "Big Dinner"...!!! I've been laughing non-stop about this for the past 48 hours...

so what are the chords?

Title: Re: Lonely Days Chords

so what are the chords?

You mean the chord symbols for guitar? I take it you can see the piano transcription...

I'll give it a go. The asterisks indicate a repetition of the previous chord, in bars with more than one chord in them. In the chords divided by slashes, the chord is on the left and the bass note on the right. The underlined bit indicates a held chord. If anyone can improve on this primitive set-up, please be my guest. :=)

great. thanks!

No problem.

I'm not entirely certain whether it should be E♭11 in bar 9. Once these chords get into double figures I tend to lose track. ;D

Perhaps a guitarist can confirm?

Ha, think the nickname sums up the professionalism of the FAI back in those times. It took a long time to improve and it's still not so good. Cronyism is alive and well in Ireland.

You're welcome. As for the delay in answering, I tend to think everyone's online all the time, as my work keeps me at the computer much of the day (to say nothing of the many online breaks  :lol ) but that obviously isn't the case. So no problem there! ;=)

I just found another ridiculous one that might make a great username for someone: John Dog's Bollocks Burke. :lol

Listening to the longer version on 1967: ST with the instrumental track exposed, it's clear that there are two keyboards at work. That said, my attempt at a transcription done in February is as close as makes a difference. Though you might choose to make the following modifications:

In bar 10 you could best repeat that G ♭ chord on the fourth beat instead of the tremolando effect. In bar 11 you can hear quaver triplets alternating the B♭ and G at the top of the chord----that might mean simplifying the bass. There are other minor differences but I leave that to you, the player. Don't take my word for all this----please listen for yourself.
