Post by: runalot on July 18, 2006, 10:37:41 PM
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

I need a taste of Wild Honey.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the Flame album was only released on vinyl....there are future plans for a cd release...but there seems to be no hurry in that...

If you're lucky you can find "The Best Of The Flames" on cd (South African release only) somewhere...

Looks like it's scheduled for release in the U.K. August 1st.  Check cduniverse.com, they have it on pre-order for $16.99.

WOW...I'm  surprised!

Unfortunately no bonustracks from their unreleased second album as was "promised" by Desper...

Where did Desper make this promise?

BMO: Does that album have a title?

SWD: No, but it’s all mixed and ready to go and I’ve tried three times to….I’ve tried with three different companies to get it released and now I’m working with Alan Boyd, or rather Alan Boyd is really doing it. He produced a couple of TV specials of the Beach Boys like “Endless Harmony”. He is currently their historian and he’s getting their tape vault all organised. He has a production company and may be able to get it released.

BMO: So we may yet see a release….

SWD: We’re working toward getting the first album that you and I are talking about along with the second album that’s still in the can, all released as one new package, of all the songs Carl produced. There’s a whole album out there just waiting to be released.

nice one, luckily I own that one, including poster and manual for how to use quad...the EP is nice to have though...I've seen it before, but it's not easy to obtain.

to be honest...I wouldn't know how and don't have the equipment...but it's nice to have the package (record, poster, manual) complete.

I just noticed this on ebay:

The groups name on the cover looks similar to the Pet Sounds album font.

I just received the CD. Despite it’s already 35 years old music, I’m surprised it sounds still so great as it did then. It hasn’t aged a bit.  Great craftsmanship: Steve Desper engineered it, Carl Wilson produced it. Beatles influenced, Beach Boys influenced. I recommend it highly and get it while you can……

Wow...how did this get released on CD without an announcement spreading like wildfire on the BB message boards?  It looks pretty official...I scooped one up very quickly.  Even if it is a boot, I'd be happy just to hear it, regardless of sound quality.  I've been waiting YEARS for this!

Good vibes,
Eric

Pretty sure it's not a boot.  I noticed on cduniverse.com a few weeks ago it was scheduled for release in the UK this week, but it's been moved to next week.  Looks as though someone got 'em early.  Heard the stuff a few years back (bad cassette copy of the vinyl). I do remember it being beatles-y.

I ordered mine from Cd Universe last week and I received my copy of it yesterday. The cd is great. The music really stands out. They did a great job on this cd.

Wow...what's next?  The POB CD-reissue?  The two CW solo albums on 1 legitimate disc?  LBWL?  Or even MLNW released by year's end?

At the beginning of this year, I would never have imagined a Flame CD and a rooftop semi-reunion with the five remaining BB...

Good vibes,
Eric

Well, I did mention this to mass indifference on The Smile Shop in June sometime (June 26 in fact)....Spin (a UK record shop and internet dealer) mentioned it on their web-site of upcoming stuff that it was finally getting a UK release.

Spin is quite useful for upcoming news before it gets printed elsewhere.

I have to say this is probably, along with Pacific Ocean Blue, my favorite non-Beach Boys album ever released.  "Don't Worry Bill" and "Lady" are my favorite non-Wilson-composed songs of all time.

I just got mine yesterday and the sound is very good but I do still wonder if this is a "grey area" CD - how many new CD labels do you know that don't list any address, website or contact information?

Who owns the rights to this record - there is no licensing information on the CD at all!  ::)

I don't know what to make of that....but now that I look at the info again, it looks like it's being released in the US next week.

Here's the order info on amazon.com (with a weird tracklisting):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GCF8ZE/sr=1-3/qid=1154634510/ref=pd_bbs_3/104-0725741-8536759?ie=UTF8&s=music

It's preorder price is $12.59 on that cduniverse site.  No, I do not work for them. :)

I just got this yesterday and I'm surprised how good it is. I totally agree that these two tracks you mention are fantastic, but the overall quality of the songs are really good. I'm always dubious when things are described as lost classics but this recording does seem to have been overlooked somewhat.

To answer somebody else's question, the sleevenotes are just one piece of paper with an overview of the band printed inside. Overall the quality of the graphics etc. seems to me that's it's been produced fairly low budget, but for the music I think it's well worth purchasing.

I finally got a chance to really listen to it and it sounds like a cleaned up needle drop to me. It sounds a little cleaner and less distorted than the CDR that I have but it also sounds more dull and muffled and I can definitely hear vinyl surface noise.  :(

I haven't heard it yet, but I hope it's not the same as with the release of 'The Best Of The Flames'. For that release they also used a couple of records which were digitally cleaned up a little, but you could still hear a click or pop hear and there. There should be a master-tape available of this album, I'd think?

What is a good source for this CD?  I couldn't find it on CD Universe.  Has anyone gotten a copy from Amazon?  It is on Amazon, with the same cover, but with this track listing, which contains none of the material on the original LP:

1. Too Many Cooks
2. Don't You Go
3. Shadow in the Night
4. Midnight Sun
5. Watch Me Run
6. This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)
7. Walk Away
8. It's All Over

If the track listing is incorrect and it is in fact the original Carl Wilson produced Flame album, but it is truly a needle drop, I'm hesitant to purchase it as my original Brother/King/Starday LP is in primo condition.

I just received it from Amazon. It's the original album and it does sound like a needle drop, and to be honest, the muffled sound is a bit maddening, because it is clear that there is some amazing instrumental interplay in the songs. I had never heard the album before and am having a hard time getting deeply into it because of the sound quality.

Terrific. The expectations went from a great CD loaded with bonus material to a bare bones needle drop low budget release.
