Title: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: Adult Child on December 31, 2016, 06:46:55 PM
Starting today (December 31st) I'm going to post everyday what happened that day in Beach Boys history. Most of the information will be from The Beach Boys: The Definitive Diary by Keith Badman, which only covers up to 1976 in detail, so if there's anything I miss than that's why (sorry in advance). If anybody knows information that I haven't posted feel free to of course. Also, Happy New Year!

DECEMBER 31st

1961: The Beach Boys play after Ike & Tina Turner in their second live appearance, which took place at the Ritchie Valens Memorial Dance at Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, California. The event was booked for them by local radio station KFWB. They played 3 songs, including 'Surfin'. They were so excited by their performance that they forgot their drums when they left. It is also their first appearance with the name Beach Boys.

1962: The Beach Boys play the last show of a short tour they'd begun on December 17th. This final show took place at the Gold Rush Festival Auditorium in Stockton, California.

1964: One of their first gigs without Brian and with Glen Campbell, which took place at The Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina.

1965: The Beach Boys play the New Year's Eve Teen Spectacular at the UPS Field House in Tacoma, Washington. Gary Lewis & The Playboys, The Yardbirds, The Beau Brummels, Vejtables, Alexys, and the Mojo Men are also on the bill. Near the end a bunch of fans mobbed the stage and the Beach Boys "leaped off the stage" according to a reviewer.

1966: English music paper Melody Maker names Pet Sounds joint album of the year along with The Beatles' Revolver. They describe the album as ".... huge orchestral paintings that had never been heard before in pop music."

1973: The Beach Boys play a New Year's Eve show at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California.

And a Happy New Year to you too!

JANUARY 1st

1964: The first recording session for Shut Down Volume 2, held at Western Recorders studio in Hollywood. They work on 'Fun Fun Fun' and 'The Warmth of the Sun'. Both songs are nearly completed and only small overdubs will be added later.

1966: The Beach Boys play at The Coliseum in Seattle, Washington with the same groups that were on the bill the night before. The Party album peaks on the Billboard chart at number 6, and 'The Little Girl I Once Knew' peaks at number 20.

1967: Capitol Records is delivered the 466,000 copies of the Smile album jacket and 419,200 copies of the Smile album booklet they'd ordered. They expect the album soon.

I'd suggest that if you are going to the trouble of doing this daily listing that you use the best source available which is here...
http://www.esquarterly.com/bellagio/gigs.html

The Badman book has dozens of inaccurate and/or false listings.

Yeah-I haven't had time to do this in a longtime but I do beg you to do it right. In case you don't know-as Jon pointed out-the badman book was very pretty to look at but people like myself and c-man began to point out that it was full of errors. I eventually began to compile a list of these errors and also began to compile all the shows I was finding that weren't in the book. This list grew to hundreds of missing shows and Jon and I then wrote a book called The Beach Boys in concert which is far more superior in terms of concerts info.  Of course there were a few errors that still crept in and I have found many more missing shows since the publication in 2013. Luckily I also supply the concert info for the website Jon supplied you a link for and I can update that. So that website has the most accurate and fullest info about concerts recording sessions and tv appearances that exists anywhere

I'm still looking at the book 'cause of the specific information it has on the dates but if the date isn't mentioned on the website too I won't include it.
I'm a bit bummed out about that, I've read that book front to back and back again endless times since I was 13. It's always been a favorite.
I'll get a copy of yer guys book after my next paycheck. Thanks for letting me know bout all this!

To illustrate some of the errors of badman: it has proved impossible to find any evidence of the venues played on that December 1962 tour though they definitely played some shows at that time-but the info in badman about it is problematic. See the footnote about it under 1962 on the website. The info about a January 1975 show at Madison square garden was an error-see our website for correct info about 1975.  As you will see-badman had a ton of incorrect information about that year

For all the time and effort the two of you put into research, you should consider finding a different host for your work, all things considered.

Also thanks to Alan Boyd, c-man, myself and agd amongst others, the website has a lot of corrected information about recording sessions. One thing badman didn't do was obtain all of session tracking documents from the American federation of musicians but we have since done that. Also he didn't have the cooperation of the bbs and therefore didn't have access to all the documentation they have from tape boxes-which we have access to.  And of course c-man became involved in writing session info for recent releases and uncovered tons more details and dates

Unless I missed them somehow, why didn't the recent Michigan '66 and Chicago '65 releases get liner notes like the Sacramento '64 notes?

C-man could answer that better but I think those releases were basically just no frills

I really try to avoid getting into these political debates. Clearly you have had differences with Andrew and David beard but if you analyze the website it is a very unbiased resource. Bellagio is just the facts and nothing but the facts

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: guitarfool2002 on January 02, 2017, 07:36:18 AM
I'd say the Sacramento shows were also no-frills, pretty much a typical BB's show that got recorded, but when the subsequent releases had Brian's involvement, especially Michigan '66 where the concert had been written about for years with all surrounding events including the premiere of GV, Brian flying to the venue to rehearse the band, it was a bigger event in terms of history than the other shows, especially Sacramento. There were some great, in-depth discussions on this board about Michigan '66 because it had so much surrounding it of historical interest, I would have thought it would receive more background info with an "official" release of a 1966 show where Brian was involved and even got brought on stage during the show, considering the October '66 era when it happened.

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: Ian on January 02, 2017, 07:41:24 AM
I agree that it deserves nice liner notes but that is unfortunately the reality of the business. The label probably had no financial incentive to do more so we will only get liner notes if Craig wants to write them for free out of the goodness of his heart

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: guitarfool2002 on January 02, 2017, 07:43:41 AM
So there was no call for liners after the '64 release?

I am not sure.  By the way we're still waiting for Craig to publish his liners for made in California

They're not just my differences when spreading verifiably bad information has been an issue with the website host.

Like I said I'm not going to express an opinion about that mine field but let me know if you find anything on the actual bellagio section of the website that seems in anyway biased or unreliable. Certainly there is nothing in the gigs and sessions section I'm involved in

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: guitarfool2002 on January 02, 2017, 08:12:14 AM
That may be the main sticking point, as well as something of a shame for those who put the time and effort into getting things right. It's hard to put any value on a resource that promotes the facts and the truth while the entity hosting that info passed information around that was blatantly false, not to mention the personal nature of some of the false claims. There cannot be a sense of promoting just the facts and the truth while actions and behaviors did just the opposite.

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history

Did agd actually knowingly give out incorrect info on the bb's and his site though? I've heard he passed around untrue "gossip" about certain people, but did he intentionally give out and/or post on his website information that he knew was incorrect?

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on January 02, 2017, 11:12:48 AM
I don't think so, mainly because the info on his website generally was done by other (excellent) researchers; main issue from him was the litany of untrue gossip he spread whenever he had an axe to grind; generally things from his own "research" hasn't panned out (Drip Drop supposedly being recorded in Aug of 1974 being just one example). Probably explains why the site wasn't updated as much.

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: Jay on January 02, 2017, 11:51:54 AM
Well to be fair, I believe that there was some initial confusion over "Drip Drop" possibly being an early version of"Ding Dang", which would explain the recording date confusion. I know that doe said many inappropriate and offensive  things to many people over the years, but intentionally skewing the factual history of The Beach Boys is something I have a very hard time believing doe would do.

If striving for accuracy, getting the facts right, and the truth is the goal, those who truly pursue those concepts could perhaps consider finding a new web host. In this case, actions spoke much louder than the words hosted on a website.

I worked on Becoming the Beach Boys, 1961-1963, for eight years because my only goal was to get it right. At least as right as I could. During those eight years, nearly a day never went by when I did not consult Bellagio 10452. It is a monumental achievement and remains, through the painstaking care, dedication, and ongoing research of Beach Boys' historians, notably Andrew, Ian, Craig, and Alan, the premiere source of scholarly Beach Boys research on the web. Kudos to David and Lee for providing a home for this invaluable resource. I didn't care then, and I don't care now, that some people were offended by the site hosts. For the same reason I do not care about the human foibles of the individual band members and who may have or may not have, to borrow a phrase from one of the more inane myopic threads on this board, "damaged  the brand." It's about the music these guys created. I'm a glass half full kind of guy. And the glass of Beach Boys music is always overflowing.

Adult Child
As Jon and Ian pointed out, if you continue the Day in the Life thread, please cross reference every entry with more reputable sources than Badham's beautifully-produced, but deeply flawed book. It has, of course, lots of good stuff, accurate stuff, but it is frustratingly flawed in its hundreds of errors and omissions.

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: guitarfool2002 on January 03, 2017, 08:38:40 AM
One of the issues is and has been that it was absolutely *not* "all about the music" when personal grudges, vendettas, and various campaigns to scrub unwanted voices out of the conversation entirely entered the process of supposedly reporting the facts. Self-appointing someone or something as a steward or gatekeeper of the so-called "truth" takes on a responsibility which in too many of these cases was ignored. It was put on full display when publicly the claim was a strict adherence to the truth and the facts, while bogus and personally damaging information which was far from the truth or the facts was being passed around like celebrity tabloid gossip, yet presented more or less as fact because of who may have been reporting it or how it was reported. Beyond that, if those who are or were being promoted as the ones who are concerned with getting the facts right were the same ones passing around if not relishing in grudge-fueled innuendo or rumor without taking a moment to fact-check or weigh the validity of the statements or claims, there is a serious issue of credibility and the loss thereof.

If anyone staking a claim to the truth in any scenario has reported incorrect information if not outright lies both public and private, and has not corrected or redacted them nor shows any signs of doing so, how is there still credibility?

As I said originally, it's a shame if anyone concerned with getting the facts right gets lumped into anything or any behavior that suggests the opposite.

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: Jay on January 03, 2017, 08:57:13 AM
The thing is, we're not talking about personal vendettas or what he said or alleged of whom. We're talking about the basic timeline and historical facts of the band's history. He may not have credibility as a human being, but I still think  he holds credibility in the field of a historian.

Title: Re: This day in Beach Boys history
Post by: guitarfool2002 on January 03, 2017, 09:26:11 AM
So it's OK for historians in any field beyond this one to pass around false information and rumor/gossip directly related to the topic which they claim to be experts on as the truth, engage in various personal vendettas and campaigns to destroy and discredit people they disagree with (or even people they associate with), and attempt to change if not control any given narrative or discussion by using such activities to do so? People get things wrong, even the best minds and historians in general make mistakes sometimes serious ones, but those who are truly respected and trusted in their fields will do what they can to correct them and redact/retract anything found to be less than truthful, up to and including a personal mea culpa and explanation where appropriate. Where has this happened in this case? It hasn't. If anything, the rhetoric has been doubled down and the campaigns haven't gone away.

When this happens it calls into question who is responsible for what, and however unfairly it may be, it can cause guilt by association. I trust info from Ian and C-Man. They really know their stuff it seems. Unfortunately, Andrew is not the most trustworthy person and without knowing who actually is doing the research at a specific time, it can unfairly call things into  question.

Andrew G Doe is somebody I deeply respected and looked up to. For me he was the Mark Lewison of The Beach Boys. I guess I just find it hard to imagine that he could turn out to be anything less.

Must've felt so amazing to be working on a second album for Capitol. Momentum building, fandom rising, and the recording of two songs that would clearly be hits.

Today in 1967 also saw the final recording session held for "Do You Like Worms", but I guess that also falls into the "Heroes and Villains" session as well.

Must've felt so amazing to be working on a second album for Capitol. Momentum building, fandom rising, and the recording of two songs that would clearly be hits.

And two songs that clearly wouldn't be.
No, they were pretty good especially for the early days. Brian's vocal on 'Farmer's Daughter' is heavenly.

Yeah, there seems to be a bit of filler on those albums, but even in the filler there are some pretty great moments.

1964: The Survivors release their Brian Wilson produced/written single ‘Pamela Jean’ and the also Brian Wilson produced/written b-side ‘After The Game’. The Survivors were a one-off group that consisted of Richard Alarian, Bob Norberg, Dave Nowlen, and Brian. This is their only release. [Personal note: The b-side ‘After The Game’ is really beautiful, if you haven’t heard it. If you have, it’s just as beautiful.] Also on this day a recording session for Paul Petersen’s ‘She Rides With Me’ takes place at RCA studios, Los Angeles, California.

Check out the 'Pet Projects (https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Projects-Brian-Wilson-Productions/dp/B000083LRM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483712263&sr=8-1&keywords=Brian+Wilson+pet+projects)' album if you can - the whole thing is full of songs produced by Brian Wilson, including those Survivors' tracks.

It's amazing how much Brian loved producing. There's a generally held belief that he produced songs like this to get better at his own producing for the Beach Boys. But I also think it's likely he was looking for a breakout group that would put him in the same arena as Phil Spector (at least when it came to producing other artists).

Anyone know if Redwood the last band Brian ever tried to produce?

Anyone know if Redwood the last band Brian ever tried to produce?

He produced Stephen Kalinich's 1969 album A World of Peace Must Come (that wasn't released until 2008). He also produced the American Spring Spring album.

There should be a list on here of everything he ever touched (musically speaking) if there isn't already.

Doh, I totally forgot about Spring. I was also under the false impression that the Redwood fiasco happened much later than the mid/late 60s.

Apparently he also helped to produce the many moods of his dad, plus the album with the similar name.

1964: Two recording sessions today: one at Western Recorders and the other at Gold Star. At the Western session, ‘In The Parkin’ Lot’, ‘This Car Of Mine’, ‘Denny’s Drums’, and ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ are worked on. ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ is nearly finished (all that’s left are a few overdubs). At Gold Star work is done on ‘Why Do Fools Fall In Love’.

1965: A recording session for the ‘Please Let Me Wonder’ instrumental at Western Recorders, Los Angeles, California. This is Brian’s first recording session since his breakdown December 23rd and it could be symbolically the beginning of (what’s considered by a lot of people) Brian’s musical golden period, which will last a little over two years.

1966: The first gig for The Beach Boys’ first Japanese tour at the Shibuya Koukaido, Tokyo, Japan.

1970: A recording session at Brian’s home studio in Bel Air, California, where they work on ‘Susie Cincinnati’, ‘Good Time’, and a cover of The Beatles’ ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’.

1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Civic Center, Lakeland, Florida.

1980: A recording session at Al Jardine’s Red Barn Studio, Big Sur area, California. Vocals for the next album (Keepin’ The Summer Alive) are worked on.

1989: The Beach Boys play a gig after the Hula Bowl at Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, Hawaii.

1999: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Stamford Center for the Arts, Stamford, Connecticut.

2011: A recording session for Brian Wilson’s In the Key of Disney album at Oceanway recording studio, Los Angeles, California.

2015: The Beach Boys play a show at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, Florida.

1/9 is a fine day in BBs history! A lot of Dennis material and vocals for one of my all-time favorite songs, Please Let Me Wonder. I couldn't help but notice this though...

1978: A recording session at Brother Studios, Santa Monica, California. Dennis works on a song called ‘Baby Blue Eyes’ (soon renamed ‘Baby Blue’) for his upcoming second album, Bambu.

1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Von Braun Center, Huntsville, Alabama without Brian.

1977: A recording session at Brother Studios, Santa Monica, California, for the tag of ‘Airplane’.

1980: A truly historic day, for today is the last day in the seemingly endless saga of them working on vocals for their album Keepin’ The Summer Alive (in reality it was only like 6 days) at Al Jardine’s Red Barn Studio, Big Sur area, California. In hindsight, none of it would matter anyway, for the album was kinda sh*t.

1987: A session for ‘Spirit of Rock & Roll’ at Evergreen Recording Studios, Burbank, California.

1988: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Orange Bowl, Miami, Florida.

Request to Adult Child. My aging eyes can't read light-colored text on dark backgrounds easily, so I use an alternate theme for this site which has black text on a yellowish background.

What that means is that I can't read posts in yellow or pink text, due to a lack of contrast. So if you could avoid using those two colors in your BB history listings, it would be very helpful for those of us who use different themes. Thanks in advance.

I find the early '80s really interesting (and tragic). In January of '81 Brian, Dennis, and Carl are all performing with the band. On top of that, they are performing with American Spring ???, Brian and Dennis are collaborating ('Stevie' recording session), and they're celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band. Considering Brian and Marilyn had recently divorced, Dennis was about to get beat up on Super Bowl Sunday, and Carl was about to leave the band...well...strange days indeed.

I have had time to do this in a long time but I'll step in for a sec to keep it going.  But mine will be for the week January 23 to 30.

Jan 25 1962- The BBs played one of their earliest shows at the Presbyterian Church in Hawthorne.  The next day they played the Wilson’s High School Senior Breakfast-with Chris Montez and the Mellow Teens.  This show wasn’t in my book as Jim Murphy uncovered it.  Circa January 29 1963-The BBs played their first show outside California at a ZBT Frat Party in Tucson, AZ.  The exact date of this show isn’t known but it was in late January.  Jan 30, 1963 the BBs also played the Navajo Nation Fairgrounds in Window Rock, AZ.

January 23 1964 the BBs played the Town Hall in Hobart, Tasmania on their first overseas tour with Roy Orbison.  The next day they were back in Sydney to tape The Surf Sound TV Show. The Beach Boys mimed to Surfer Girl and Little Deuce Coupe. They then flew to Wellington, New Zealand and had a meet and greet at the airport at 11:30 AM on Jan 25.  That day they played three shows at the Civic Theatre, Invercargill, NZ.  They then flew to Christchurch, where they spent the 26th. On the 27th and 28th they performed at the Theatre Royal in Christchurch, NZ Town Hall.  On January 29 they were in Wellington and performed at the Founders Hall in Hamilton, New Zealand on January 30.

On January 27 1965 the BBs played the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, OR.  Glen was unable to play this show and Brian stepped in for the first time since his Houston departure. Glen was back to perform with them at the Exhibition Forum in Vancouver on January 29-the first Canadian concert. On January 30, 1965 they played the Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle with Jan and Dean, The Viceroys, the Sonics, The Astronauts, Sir Raleigh and the Coupons, Jimmy Hannah, Terry Black and the Dynamics.  You got your moneys worth in those days-though the sound system was usually poor and the BBs played forty minutes at most.

Jan 24 1966 Brian worked on the track intro for You Still Believe In Me.  The BBs had just completed their Japanese tour and most of them flew to Hawaii to relax. Mike Love, Dick Duryea and Bruce Johnston on the other hand decided to visit Hong Kong, where they held a press conference at the Mandarin Hotel on Jan 25 1966 (the conference was to clear up why they were there for the curious media).  The BBs didn’t actually get around to playing there for many years.  Bruce and Mike joined the others in Hawaii in time to perform at HIC Arena on Jan 29 1966 with Jackie Lee, Lou Christie, The Mop Tops, The Undertakers, Frankie Samuels and the Kinfolk.  Jan 23 1967 Brian worked on Surfs Up, apparently on String and Horn Overdubs. The tape of this session is apparently lost.  Jan 25 1967-Brian produced Jasper Daily singing “Teeter Totter Love”-officially released on the 2011 box set. Jan 27 1967 at Columbia the BBs worked on Heroes and Villains (the In the Cantina section and the Children Were Raised section) as well as Whistle In.

Around this time Brian met Maharishi with the BBs in New York. Paul’s future wife Linda was there to photograph the occasion. Not sure exact date of the photo but Maharishi was in the states from Jan 19 to Jan 23 when he left for India. He visited the UN on Jan 20 and gave a TM lecture in Madison Square Garden on Jan 21-so those are the likely days).  He visited Boston on Jan 22 and I am certain Mike saw this lecture as well, as TM already obsessed him. Jan 24-29 1969 three sessions were held during this week for “San Miguel.”

Jan 26 1970-the BBs were hard at work on Sunflower and did overdubs on Tears In the Morning, Our Sweet Love, Lady and Take a load off Your Feet.  The following two days were spent mixing the Live in London tapes at Capitol (though I am not sure how involved the BBs were in that.  Desper told me that he had nothing to do with it and that he wasn’t even aware that EMI was making an album of that tour) On Jan 28 Bruce overdubbed some piano on Tears in the Morning.  Carl was pretty preoccupied at that time with his legal problems.  On Jan 29 1970 he given 3 years probation and fined 4,000 dollars, plus ordered to work two years as institutional helper for the county department of hospitals.  But this wasn’t the end of the story-he felt that he could do more by doing concerts and appealed the sentence. Case dragged on till Sept 1971.

January 1972-Al and Mike were in Majorca, Spain studying TM.  As we all know by the late 1980s there relationship had soured but they were pretty close in the early 1970s due to their common interest in TM.  January 1973-Brian was in Fort Dodge, Iowa with David Sandler to work on the Spring LP.  At some point in January 1974, some of the BBs were at Caribou Ranch to back Elton John Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me. Mike was attending a five-week TM course in Belgium.  Jan 30, 1976- the sessions for 15 Big Ones began with Brian producing Palisades Park.  January 1977 Mike began a 6-month TM course in Switzerland

January 30 1978 a session was held for Dennis’s great “Baby Blue” Jan 23 and 24 1979 overdubs were done for his song “Love Surrounds Me.”  Jan 26 1980 the song “Sunshine” received overdubs. Jan 28 1980-the song “Keepin’ the Summer Alive” received overdubs. Jan 29 1980-Dennis and Christine McVie were scheduled to appear at an event at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion-but they probably didn’t or at least there is no evidence that they did. January 30, 1980-The BBs, without Dennis, filmed the mini-Concert for the Going Platinum TV documentary at KTTV in Hollywood.

Jan 27 1982-Carl worked on his second album Youngblood. He recorded “Time”. The next day he recorded Opus II and on Jan 29 1982 he worked on She’s Mine and Goin’ Down.  On Jan 28 1982-Mike spoke at UCLA’s Grand Ballroom about TM.  January 1984 the BBs had a tour planned but all the dates were canceled or postponed due to Dennis’s tragic death.  Jan 27-29 1986 the BBs were at Harrah’s Tahoe.
Jan 23 1987 the BBs played at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix, AZ.  Jan 24 1987-the BBs appeared on the “Super Night at the Super Bowl” CBS TV-hosted by Patrick Duffy- they sang “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena” with Brian. The next day they played live at the pre-super Bowl show in Pasadena. On Jan 26 1987 they played a private show for the Ford motor Company at the Universal-Sheraton-with Brian apparently. On Jan 29 1987 Brian and Gary Usher worked on “All Over Me” and “Magic” The BBs had flown to the Midwest and played the Dane County Coliseum in Madison on the 29th and the Masonic Auditorium in Toledo on January 30 1987.

Jan 23 1988-the BBs played at Caesars’ Palace in Atlantic City, NJ.  They were back in LA on Jan 25 1988 to pick up the award of merit at the American Music Awards. Mike was wearing a hard hat in case people attacked him after his Hall of Fame speech the previous week.  Brian was also there but completely estranged from the group-he sat in a different section of the auditorium.  Jan 24 1989 the BBs played at the Spectrum in Philadelphia with Chicago.  These shows were being filmed for the BBs upcoming Endless Summer TV show and Brian had a solo section of the show where he sang Surfer Girl, Love and Mercy, Melt Away and Walking the Line.  The same thing happened the next night at the Centrum in Worcester, MA and at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on the 27th.

Jan 1990-Brian with Bob Dylan recorded an unreleased version of Spirit of Rock and Roll.  Jan 28 1991-Brian played an 11-song set with Don Was at the China Club in LA.  January 26 1996 the BBs played a private show at the Phoenix Convention Center (it was a pre Super Bowl party). Jan 28 1996-the BBs, with Brian, appeared at Brixton Academy, London to sing “Fun, Fun, Fun” with Status Quo. This was filmed for a video.  The BBs were in England for a week doing promotion for the Quo collaboration. On Jan 29 1996-Brian, while in London, did an interview with Duglas Stewart to be shown at a Tribute show.

Jan 24 1998-the BBs played at the NBC Tent at the Four Seasons Aviara Resort in Carlsbad, CA and Mike Love and California Beach Band played at the Mission Ballroom, Town and Country Hotel in San Diego, CA.  Jan 25 1998- Mike, Bruce, Dave M, Glen Campbell, John Stamos and Dean Torrence played at the Super Bowl Pre-Game Show in San Diego, CA. Al apparently wasn’t told and saw it on TV! Jan 28 1998 Brian recording session at Shrimp Boat Sound in Key West: Vocals for South American-with Jimmy Buffet.  I could go on but I think I’ll stop there…

I noticed that I neglected to say January 1968 when discussing Brian meeting Maharishi in New York.

Regarding the January 1989 BB/Brian shows (the shows with the mini Brian solo sets), do we know for sure that multiple shows were videotaped?

I recall the one live show used for the "Endless Summer" show was a Southern California venue, and it's some sort of outdoor amphitheater, so it's definitely not the Spectrum in Philadelphia.

It would be pretty nice to see multiple live shows from that tour in video. But if those shows were captured, I recall reading that all of the "Endless Summer" show footage was destroyed years ago, perhaps in a fire?

Thanks for keeping it going, Ian. And thanks again for the wonderful book. :=)

Regarding the second BB gig in the list, I read somewhere that Chris Montez and Brian were classmates at Hawthorne (or maybe just schoolmates).

And I managed to weed out from among all the inevitable porn site links that according to old copies of the The Decatur Herald a band called The Mellow-Teens played at least one gig in Decatur, Illinois, in late 1957. (Maybe there's no connection.)

In regard to 1989-you are correct!!! My bad.  The filmed show took place in May at Costa Mesa

I have to say, those "mini solo set" shows were really bizarre. Brian finally there, but not participating in most of the BB show. Then they do his solo stuff, but with the actual BBs off stage.

He did an early version (different verse melody) of "In My Car" at the Costa Mesa show as shown on the "Endless Summer" show; I wonder if that was the only performance of that one.

Was it the Costa Mesa show or one of the others cited by Ian above,  that Brian wore the black leather pants on stage ??

I'm back, but I won't be able to come on here every day, so I'm not gonna do this thread personally because it'd probably be too infrequent.
Thanks to B.E. and Ian for keepin it up!  :bw
