Welcome back to the fight to survive!

Beatles for Sale is the fourth studio album by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 4 December 1964 in the United Kingdom and produced by George Martin for Parlophone. The album marked a minor turning point in the evolution of the Lennon–McCartney partnership, John Lennon particularly now showing interest in composing songs of a more autobiographical nature. "I'm a Loser" shows Lennon for the first time coming under the influence of Bob Dylan, whom he met in New York while on tour, on 28 August 1964.

Beatles for Sale did not produce a single for the UK – the non-album tracks "I Feel Fine" and "She's a Woman" performed that role. Nevertheless, that coupling was followed up in the United States by "Eight Days a Week", which became their seventh number one in March 1965. In Australia, the only-ever non-original Beatles single (either side) went to Number One: Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music" backed with Carl Perkins' "Honey, Don't", which held the summit for four weeks.

The album hit the UK number one spot and retained that position for 11 of the 46 weeks that it spent in the Top 20. Beatles for Sale did not surface as a regular album in the US until 1987. In its place was Beatles '65 which featured eight songs from Beatles for Sale, plus the A and B-side of "I Feel Fine" and "I'll Be Back" from the UK's A Hard Day's Night album. Beatles '65 enjoyed a nine-week run at the top of the US charts from January 1965.

Per the usual, vote for your LEAST FAVORITE TRACK!!!

Vote tally will be on December 30.

"Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey!" is a good enough place to start.

A very good album, they were a bit too busy dealing with the fans to make time for a great album.

I feel like Beatles For Sale was a critical point for the Beatles where they were trying to figure out how they wanted to go forward and what they should leave behind. It's a transition point.

It hearkens back to their dance hall days. I amk pretty sure that was why it was included. At this point they were scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to come up with material. Paul's songs were all written when he was a teenager. John is the only one who brought new stuff to the table on this album.

With songs like "No Reply", "I'm A Loser", "Baby's In Black", "What You're Doing", and "Every Little Thiing", I've always though that Beatles For Sale was one of their first truly great albums. I agree that some of the covers aren't really necessary though.

2 John songs. 1 Paul. and 1 true Lennon/McCartney number.

Paul's written "Every little thing" & "What You're Doing". John sings his song.

Paul's written "Every little thing" & "What You're Doing". John sings his song.

Every Little Things is a true Lennon/Macca song*. They both wrote it. They both sing it. Paul mostly wrote What You're Doing and Paul mostly sings it.

*Lennon was dismissive of the composition because he didn't particularly care for the song. He said he "threw something in", But with some analysis it's obvious he wrote the chorus.

Post by: RangeRoverA1 on December 28, 2016, 12:47:45 PM
There must be real evidence that John's written the chorus. I read elsewhere that Paul is the sole songwriter of ELT. By saying John sings it I meant his vocal is best featured.

On which song specifically? Because WYD is almost entirely Paul's vocal.

I said that John sings his song, i.e. Paul's "Every Little Thing". To which you said that they both sing it. Technically yes but I meant by saying John sings it that his voice is best featured. So it counts like John vocal.

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #4: Bealtes For Sale
Post by: RangeRoverA1 on December 28, 2016, 01:00:26 PM
At any rate, it's a Paul song & no factual evidence that they both had written it. I don't think Paul would take John's chorus credit. It isn't among popular Beatles songs anyway.

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #4: Bealtes For Sale

What's that for? In any Beatles bio, it says that Paul's written "Every little thing".

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #4: Bealtes For Sale
Post by: pixletwin on December 28, 2016, 01:09:26 PM
This is what confused me:

Paul's written "Every little thing" & "What You're Doing". John sings his song.

You mention two songs in the first half of your post. The second half makes a statement in the singular without specifying which of the two you are talking about. As you said, it doesn't really matter.

Title: Re: The Beatles Survivor #4: Bealtes For Sale
Post by: RangeRoverA1 on December 28, 2016, 01:14:28 PM
Well I thought it was obvious which song I meant as we know these Beatles songs so I didn't bother to specify.

You know & said as such that "What You're Doing" is Paul vocal, then what's left is "Every Little Thing" to which I referred. I don't know why it must be repeated. I thought it was clear as day which song I meant.

So we get back to my earlier post - "Paul's written "Every Little Thing" & "What You're Doing". John sings his song".

There is NO evidence that John's written chorus in "Every Little Thing". I read elsewhere, in any Beatles book, that Paul is a sole songwriter.

Yes, anyway....

I agree with feelsflow, Mr. Moonlight has always been one I love because of lennon's vocal work. It's not in my top three for the album, but I certainly don't qualoify it has awful. lol

"Mr Moonlight" has to be the first to go.

Try dropping two of the lesser covers and replace with the concurrent single "I Feel Fine" b/w "She's A Woman." You'll get a truly great album in return. Speaking of covers, Ringo's take on "Matchbox" would have been 1000X times better than "Mr Moonlight", the worst Beatles tune ever.

That's my favorite version, nobody did this like John and Paul, an incredible tribute.  Another well picked cover, like "Mr. Moonlight" - by this point in their career the cover choices were on a roll.
See the BBC Live Archives for more information.

You're right that they were writing some great tunes, but there is another cover here that should go first.  Check Unreconstructed Wilsonite's pick.

I think it's a great cover but it's my least favorite on the album and quite possibly my least favorite cover besides 'Dizzy Miss Lizzy'. It feels like it could be better I suppose, a feeling which I don't really get from most of the other songs.

Yes, it's great cover indeed! I like "Kansas City". Paul really shines here as vocalist. I see you say it could be better - maybe. Does it mean that you think that "Words of love" that you picked to buzz off couldn't be better no matter what? Think I'm puzzled by your above statement saying that it's possibly your least favorite cover besides "Dizzy" whist you picked "Words".

Well, I'm late to the party. I would have voted off Honey Don't first, but it wouldn't have been enough to save Mr. Moonlight. Mr. Moonlight's got a terrible reputation, but since when was being one of the worst Beatles songs such a bad thing? I like it. I love the vocal. I seek it out from time to time. Speaking of Mr. Moonlight, has anyone noticed the difference between the stereo and mono versions? I grew up on stereo, so now when I listen to the mono version I feel cheated! It fades out before the final "Mr. Moonlight". Paul really reaches for that note and nails it!

A few random thoughts: 1) Does anyone hear George singing on the Beatles For Sale version of Words of Love? To me, it's always been Paul singing the higher part and John singing the lower part (incredible vocal by John btw; my favorite aspect of the Beatles version). Some claim George sings on it. There is a line or two after the solo where I almost hear what sounds like George singing in unison with Paul and then at the end of the song I can almost hear George singing during the final "ahhhs". That said, I bet it's my mind playing tricks on me since I'm listening for it. It doesn't seem inconceivable to me though, that George might sing along during an overdub. He did sing that song in the past, apparently.

2) I'm not ready for Kansas City / Hey Hey Hey to go! Don't you love those "bye bye, bye bye, bye bye...so long, so long, so long" backing vocals? I do. That's a fine rocker! Respectfully, pixletwin, it never occurred to me that Paul's vocal wasn't up to the task. Oh well.

3) Another Lennon backing vocal that makes the song for me? I'll Follow The Sun. The way he sings "time has come and so my love i must go...lose a friend in the end you will know" is perfect. He really solidifies the mood and enhances the song (like many other McCartney/Lennon harmonies do). I've really been enjoying Lennon's Beatle harmonies lately and the feeling he puts into it. The ones that are comfortably in his range, at least.

My vote is for Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby. My least favorite remaining, but I really like how George sings "Well, they took some honey, from a tree" starting at about the 2:00 minute mark. That's probably my favorite part of the song.

No I meant I think all the other songs have a complete feeling to them. I feel they could've done more with 'Words of Love'. It's a nice tribute but in comparison to the rest it feels lackluster. I do prefer it to 'Honey Don't' though, just cause it's a better song.

I think it's a great cover but it's my least favorite on the album and quite possibly my least favorite cover besides 'Dizzy Miss Lizzy'. It feels like it could be better I suppose, a feeling which I don't really get from most of the other songs.

I love the beatles version of Words of Love. Paul's vocals on Kansas City are strained. Not a great vocal from Paul.

Does anyone hear George singing on the Beatles For Sale version of Words of Love? To me, it's always been Paul singing the higher part and John singing the lower part (incredible vocal by John btw; my favorite aspect of the Beatles version). Some claim George sings on it. There is a line or two after the solo where I almost hear what sounds like George singing in unison with Paul and then at the end of the song I can almost hear George singing during the final "ahhhs". That said, I bet it's my mind playing tricks on me since I'm listening for it. It doesn't seem inconceivable to me though, that George might sing along during an overdub. He did sing that song in the past, apparently.

I don't think so, I don't hear George at all. There are little bits when John or Paul's voice sort of hit a tone that kinda sounds like George's voice but it's probably a Liverpool thing. That's the only explanation I can think of!

I can only image what it was like in 1976 to finally have a new BB record in my hands for the first time in 3 years, dropping the needle to hear the followup to the brilliant Holland album, and the very non rock and roll, Rock and Roll Music comes out of the speakers.  Oh my.

John sang it when The Beatles were still peaking.  Mike and The Boys did it once their creative peak was over, and they starting chasing nostalgia for a living.

The Beatles were growing, covers of any kind except for Ringo were about to be over.  The original tracks are so strong I can not vote to off them before the covers are gone.  This round, next round, doesn't matter.

I did get a chuckle out of pixletwin's take on 1976 Beach Boys, but as one who was there when that needle first made contact, I know the deal with the high school girls didn't start til the 80's.  It looked creepy, and it was.  I really think Mike thought of that as more trying to recreate the days with Go-Go Girls and Guys dancing around the stage, which was neat on something like the T.A.M.I. Show, but came across as more "dirty old man groping" at the baseball fields and fairgrounds they were choosing to play at.  Maybe they should have taken the Showcase Clubs route instead, just room for the band on those small stages.  I noticed Al cringing more than once, and Carl rolled his eyes and played on.  It seemed a compromise that Carl made with Mike when he came back to the band.  Nobody could convince Mike the early 60's couldn't be recreated like that.  The same can be said for the Beach Boys version of "Rock and Roll Music" - they were not doing this song in the 60's, so we'll never know.  Just another speculation.  They didn't touch the power of a John led Beatles at the top of his Rock and Roll game.  John had Chuck in his soul too, that wasn't the exclusive domain of the Beach Boys, and especially not in 1976.  John was worn out too by the mid-70's, let's point that out.  John could not have shouted out those lyrics as convincingly at 35, as is well shown on his Rock and Roll album.  He did better sticking to the slow groovers.  He wasn't a Rocker anymore.

Mike wanted to pick up the pace, and leave the hippie robes behind by 1973.  He was ripping thru Stones numbers, too.  Effective or not, he felt it was time to add a bit of show - the same thing the Beatles did in Hamburg.  I enjoyed the spangle-y  turbaned Mike of 1976.  He wanted attention, and he got it.  One of the reasons they became such a popular act in 1973 and 1974, but that lasted just so long.  I love 15 Big Ones, as I've posted so long I'm blue.  I'll say there are worse songs on the album, and leave it at that.

My pick is "Words of Love"

What the hell are you folks going to do when we get to the meat of this album?  Besides argue.  Stones/Beatles, Beach Boys/Beatles, John/Paul.  And let me add one more thought for you to argue about:  I was around in the mid-60's.  It was not Beach Boys vs. Beatles nearly as much as Stones vs. Beatles being discussed in the schoolyard.  My Beach Boys obsession was shouted down on a regular basis.  Sort of like now.

Much better turnout this week. (15 votes)

One last thought on Rock and Roll Music...what are the odds that it was the most performed song by The Beatles? And/or the song Lennon sang the most in his life? Rock and Roll Music was played by the group each year from 1960-1966. The only such song. However, I don't have any idea how often it was performed each year. Some Beatle freaks must have figured this mystery out years ago. In a way, I kind of feel John's voice was made to sing that song (among many other songs!).

Btw, The BBs version topped Chuck Berry's on the charts! That surprised me when I first found that out :lol I can dig it.

My vote is for I'll Follow The Sun.

"Baby's in Black" is clearly the best song here.

Bubbly,  You know more than I think you know.  "I'm A Loser" is indeed the weakest of the hat trick songs, and "Baby's in Black" is the best.
Those observations tell me you know more than you let on about this little group.

Even though it looks like "What You're Doing" is on the ropes, I'll pick "I'm A Loser" and see what happens.  We would have
to get some more help.  Where's Rick?  Does undercover-m listen to the group?  I'm surprised we don't have more Beatles fans

Finally. An easy round with a clear winner. (10 votes)

Round#1 Mr. Moonlight December 30
Round#2 Honey Don't January 2
Round#3 Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey! January 5
Round#4 Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby January 8
Round#5 Words of Love January 11

Round#9 I'll Follow The Sun January 22
Round#10 What You're Doing January 25

Who am I going to vote off... Which of the songs left does not deserve to be in the top three? This is a tough one.

I think I'll have to vote off Baby's In Black. I love the song. I love the tight Lennon/Macca harmonies. But in the end, I think (of the remaining three) it has the least interesting backing track.

Oh dear what can you do?

While it's probably the most popular out of the final four from the Fab Four from Beatles For Sale, I'm doubling four to equal eight =

Eight Days a Week

Tough call. It's got that great Beatles sound and a memorable title, but I always found the other three more interesting...

I could swear I had a CD of this album but I just looked for it but can't find it anywhere.
OK, I looked and looked and could not find the CD of this album I thought I had. I did have a cassette version, which I haven't listened to in a very long time (like, probably 15 years or more) and I think it was the American version. So today I went out and bought it and listened to it in my car a couple times.

First of all, the first 3 songs on this album are as good as any 3 consecutive songs on any Beatles album. In fact, Baby's in Black makes me cry. :( It's got this certain happy/sad quality to it that hits me right ->there<-

A couple of the so-so original songs I thought could have been better had they worked on them a little more. They had potential, but weren't quite there.

And the covers, even though generally well-done, left me with the feeling I was missing out on something. Didn't really want to hear them do somebody else's stuff when their own, original stuff was on the verge of blossoming.

I think this might be the most "rock 'n roll"-y of all their albums - helped by the covers, I might add.

George's guitar solos on several of the songs sounded a bit sloppy (notably Baby's in Black). Not a big deal though, I guess he was still perfecting his technique.

it's quite strange reviewing the songs again for these battles, and trying to pick the
weak songs when they are so gosh darn good! Especially now, with these albums
from here on in being the 'grails'.

For me, for the most part, it's easy to choose the worst song on the Beatles albums and the best one. It's everything in between that's hard.

Baby's In Black
Eight Days A Week

Round#2 Honey Don't January 2
Round#3 Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey! January 5

Round#8 Every Little Thing January 19
Round#9 I'll Follow The Sun January 22
Round#10 What You're Doing January 25
Round#11 I'm A Loser january 29

Each of the remaining three are deserving I think.

I love Baby's In Black. But I think I like the other two more.

Both of the remaining two have great backing tracks and have their own bit of unique little goodies that could easily earn them the #1 spot.

After listening to both tracks, I will vote for No Reply because that middle bit "If I were you I'd realize that I love you more than any other guy!" is just a great moment. Dut damn if Eight Days A Week isn't great too...

No Reply. Final answer.

No Reply is, IMO, one of the most overlooked great songs in The Beatles catalog.  Maybe because it leads off an album that many fans tend to dismiss.
