Title: Bruce sings the lead on Cal Girls!!!
Post by: rickymyfataar on December 27, 2016, 12:12:55 AM
Some said this would never happen but I stayed optimistic and I knew someday my optimism would be rewarded.
Although I was surprised that he needed the lyrics to a song he has performed over a million times

I can't hear Bruce on the lead anyway, he's moving his lips but is being overshadowed by the other guy.

Bruce sang verse one entirely by himself, I think; other guy sang verse two by himself.

This is what all BB gigs are going to look like from now on, if they do the inauguration.

Maybe the mic needed adjusting.

god he didn't even know the words? like really??
it's been a staple in every Beach Boys concert since 1966, when he himself recorded on it!

It's pretty funny if Bruce has trouble remembering the words to a song that probably has been played at 99.9% of the concerts they've performed since the mid-late 60s, and was the show opener for a couple of decades.

At this stage in terms of the touring band, Bruce has probably witnessed Mike singing this song more times than any other BB including Carl, Brian, and Al, having spent the last 18 years as the only other BB regularly in the band.

The problem was the band didn't know the tune. They sucked big time. Bruce didn't have a chance.

The band was bad. Bruce was bad.

No doubt Bruce would sound better singing this with the current incarnation of The Beach Boys. But this is not good. Band included.

The word 'sings' in the thread title is a stretch. ;D

Don't mind the band, fact is Bruce epic-failed it. It's not their fault.

To be fair, Brian uses a teleprompter at every concert. I can't remember if Al does, but he certainly flubs lyrics here and there.

I'm a little surprised by the over-analyzing of this performance. It appears Bruce was in attendance, asked to come up to perform California Girls, graciously obliged and it was a mediocre at best performance. I'm not exactly sure what this has to do with legacy...

Exactly.  I'm sure it was a fun moment for everyone in attendance to have Bruce get up there but it's obviously nothing more than an impromptu performance at the local bar.  The video does the performance no favors but it doesn't warrant anything more than a shoulder shrug.

Well I think its fine that Al forgets the lyrics here and there, as any hardcore fan will know that Al's memory has always been fuzzy .

The band should've at least looked up the proper chords (or asked Bruce?) before attempting this garbage.

You're kind of missing the point. Al, Brian, Bruce and Mike are all in their 70s now--if they need the lyrics in front of them, I don't know why that's a big deal. Guess what, their voices aren't in peak form. I'm not sure what either has to do with legacy. Seems like unnecessary shots for a spontaneous performance.

I said that its fine, I definitely don't think its a big deal at all. I was just pointing out that Al's memory has always been fuzzy even in his 20s .

The Tearaways are actually a fairly well respected band in the power pop world.  They've been around for about 25 years, and they have a habit of jamming with pop legends of the past - I've seen them with Bo Donaldson, Clem Burke and a few of the Raspberries over the years.
