Title: Heard Another One on Sirrius XM Deep Tracks...
Post by: c-man on December 24, 2016, 06:30:49 AM
"Marcella". Actually though, I didn't hear it...it hit the channel after it had ended, but before the next song title displayed - so I just saw "Beach Boys" and "Marcella" on the screen without actually hearing it. Still cool to know, though.

I miss having Sirius sometimes. I got it because I wanted to follow Howard Stern but that got old after a while. I only listened to Stern, RawDog comedy and the 60's, 70's and 80's channels. The 60's channel played Beach Boys music quite a bit. Mostly the hits, as you would guess, but I did catch a few odd cuts on the 70's station from time to time. Honestly, I think the band has enough music to warrant their own channel. It would be great hearing the deep cuts, alternate versions and interviews from the guys and those around them. If that happened, I would re-subscribe. ;D

I've never heard any BB music on SiriusXM weirdly enough.

Have heard them on the Garage channel a few times - songs such as Do It Again and Hang on to Your Ego.

On the 60s channel it's primarily the hits but will hear other songs on occasion such as Friends, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Girl Don't Tell Me

Just curious how much airplay the Beach Boys get on SiriusXM these days ?

I started my 3 month free trial yesterday and have already heard Wouldn't It Be Nice, California Girls, and Little Deuce Coupe on the 60s channel despite primarily listening to the 50s, Elvis, and Beatles channels. It's cool to see that they've got some play on other channels (Do It Again and Hang On To Your Ego on Underground Garage; Marcella and Funky Pretty on Deep Tracks), anyone else have any examples? Do they get much play on the 70s or 80s channels? Songs from the early 70s albums or the singles from the 70s/80s?

I hear a lot of Beach boys on Sirius. I heard "Strange World" yesterday on Deep Tracks and "Do You Wanna Dance" on the 60s. I have Alerts set for several artists and a few songs, so when driving I am alerted anytime a Beach Boys song is playing. I have an alert for Brian and Dennis, too, as on rare occasion they get played. Not all cars sirrius configurations have the Alert option. I find it invaluable. Channels I hear Beach Boys on: 60s, 70s, 80s, The Bridge, Deep Tracks, Classic Vinyl (rarely, but have heard Good Vibrations and Sail On Sailer), Garage, Love (God Only Knows mostly), The Loft (where I heard Brian [Southern California from TLOS] and Dennis [River Song]). No Shoes Radio, and Margaritaville. If you can set the alert you will hear quite a bit of The Beach Boys. The Garage will play some hits, but also deeper cuts from the early years.

Awesome. I'll look into 'alerts'. It's nice to hear that occasionally tracks like Strange World, Southern California, and River Song get played. And that there's at least a little BBs presence on many channels. Thanks!

Wow, "Strange World" was played on Deep Tracks? Fantastic! A newish Beach Boys song (from this decade) on the radio!  :)
I heard the dearly departed Tom Petty  :'( play "I'm Waiting For The Day" on his "Buried Treasure" show last year.

No surprise on Petty - apart from the Don Was documentary where he talks like a true diehard fan about the music, he was one of the few in the mainstream rock lexicon before it became widely released to say he loved to listen to bootlegs of Brian recording Pet Sounds, to the point where he'd geek out so much he said it could annoy people as he listened to Brian doing take after take in the studio on those boots.

He was one of us, lol. The list of similar musicians who geeked out on BB session bootlegs like Petty can be surprising, and it's beyond the expected "Olivia Tremor Control" kinds of artists.

The BB certainly have enough to do a Sirius channel. Even if it was a temporary run like they do with other artists but they continue to miss the boat big time regarding these types of marketing opportunities as they do with electronic downloads with live material.

I think a BB Sirius channel would be great.  There's a ton of material with BB, solo BB, artists that influenced the BB and vice versa.

I'd love to hear Brian (and Mike, Al, and Bruce) DJ a show like Tom Petty did. They could play BBs studio and live recordings, solo material, unreleased material, and any artist who influenced or inspired them. It would be really interesting/fun to hear the selections they make and whatever remarks or stories they tell about them.

I heard "It's About Time" from Sunflower,on Deep Tracks yesterday. In the same hour in the car I also heard "Little Duece Coup" on 60s, "409" on Underground Garage. "California Girls" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" later in the day when I was back in the car. The WIBN was the Brian on the bridge version which I prefer. Sirrius plays that version about 80 percent of the time, at least 80% of
the times I hear it.

Post by: B.E. on November 01, 2017, 08:44:27 AM
That's interesting about WIBN...I'll have to listen for that! Aside from the songs I heard on Buried Treasure last night (Farmer's Daughter, Friends, Surf's Up), I was really surprised to hear 'The Beach Boys Medley' yesterday! I heard it on the online channel, Oldies Party. I know it was a hit in '81, but I wasn't expecting to hear it.

Edit: I also heard the 'Long Version' of the Medley. I hadn't heard that before. Now I gotta track down the ballad version.

Did anyone happen to catch that?  I forgot about it and would've only had about 10 minutes to listen anyway.  Have The Beach Boys ever spoken much about Elvis besides Brian's interactions with him in the studio in 1975?

^since then I've heard Shut Down P.2., Let Him Run Wild, Forever, Long Promised Road, Feel Flows, You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone, Marcella, and Sail On Sailor.

Tom name-checked the Carl & the Passions - So Tough album both times and also encouraged record collectors to listen to the b-sides because the BBs 'always had something good' on the b-side. Just, generally, had a lot of very nice things to say about the Beach Boys, including their lesser known earlier material and the late '60s -early '70s period.

Petty of course also wrote some introductory liner notes for the 2000 CD for "Holland."

It's too bad Petty didn't do more with Carl. Imagine Petty (who was co-writing great stuff for the Wilburys as well as Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison solo albums) giving Carl a song or two to put on a BB album in the late 80s/early 90s. Imagine Carl singing a song like "You Got It" or "Free Fallin" on a 1989 Beach Boys album.

I totally agree. 'You Got It' is the perfect example. It's not hard at all to imagine Carl singing it (or a similar song). The timing would have been perfect.

I heard "Caroline, No" - the stereo mix - on DTs the other morning - but it sounded very weird, and not all that good. The vocals were too low, and there was some weird phasing. They probably used too much compression/limiting, or maybe even played the 5.1 mix by accident?

Earlier the same morning, I had the Elvis channel on while taking my mom to the airport (Elvis being her fave singer). John Stamos was guest-DJing, and he had past-and-present Beach Boys manager Jerry Schilling on the phone (Jerry having worked for Elvis before working for Billy Joel and eventually the Beach Boys). Among some great Elvis stories, Jerry told the story of how he was tour-manager for Billy Joel when he opened for the Boys at Pine Knob. Having hit it off with the guys, he was still surprised when Carl Wilson called him up and asked him to take over from Rick Nelson as tour manager for the band. Sometime later, he became Carl's personal manager, and then Mike Love asked him to do the same for the group. As we all know, he was subsequently dismissed from that role in favor of Tom Hulett, but is now once again at the co-helm of Brother Records, Inc. He seems to genuinely like Stamos, and even complimented him as a drummer, saying he hoped everyone listening had the chance to see him play with the band ("No one can really fill the big shoes Dennis Wilson left, but this guy does a great job" - words to that effect).

I love all those albums, minus Brian Wilson 88 but I think if I played that for a non BB fan ... they really wouldn't get it. The BB music truly is an acquired taste.

As for Petty, his stuff from mid-80s to late-90s was BRILLIANT and CREATED fans. Keep in mind, I have over 2,000 BB and BB related songs on my smart phone and ZERO Petty albums. Just an observation. I feel the Beach Boys or just Carl would have benefited GREATLY from a teaming with Petty. Can you imagine Carl in the Traveling Wilburys during the first run? He would have become a house hold name.

I definitely agree that Carl being in the Wilburys might have been spectacular.  And I'm not criticizing Tom Petty - I like some of his stuff although I'm not a die-hard fan by any means.  I can't claim to know his whole catalogue and maybe I just don't realize that he was a genius.  I also agree that the BB music is an acquired taste - but once you acquire it, you realize how incredible it is and, quite frankly, how superior it is to the vast majority of pop music.  Which is what I was trying to get at.  Tom Petty wrote some really solid, catchy songs.  But the BB did that too (songs like Sail on Sailor and Marcella) and then created masterpieces like Surf's Up, which go way beyond straight-ahead rock.

Title: Re: Heard Another One on Sirrius XM Deep Tracks...
Post by: HeyJude on December 28, 2017, 09:54:10 AM
Tom Petty was in such a different wheelhouse from the BBs, but his music was more than just "straight-ahead rock." His output from 1989 through the 90s is pretty impressive.

I'd say Petty's best albums like "Full Moon Fever" and "Wildflowers" are stronger front-to-back than most latter-day BB albums.

"Full Moon Fever" is a stronger album front-to-back than BW '88, to make the closest available comparison. And obviously, Petty's output far exceeded the spotty post-1980 work the BBs collectively or solo did.

If someone told me they thought Petty's output was stronger than the BBs 70s work, I would assume they were probably talking more about the post-1975 material like "15 Big Ones", etc.

In any event, to me anyway it sounds a bit dismissive or patronizing to downplay Petty's stuff as "catchy" and/or "straight ahead rock." It was all of that often. But he had a whole style, and lyrical output, that was so different from the BBs that it's hard to compare.

Again, maybe the BBs speak to you more than anything else. But that doesn't always make it more substantive or serious or automatically superior to most of the rest of music. I feel like I would have to have a pretty wide, diverse knowledge of pop music before assuming the BBs were superior.

To the degree I am knowledgeable of a wider scope of music, I've found that the BB's most transcendent, highest peaks are hard to beat by much of anyone. When it comes to the best of their best, they're right up there with the top tier. But in terms of career-long, front-to-back album quality, the BBs have a much patchier record. Their era, as a group, of regularly making new music only lasted about 20 years when you think about it. It's 1961-1980, and then (in terms of released music anyway), it's very scattered (and what *is* there isn't all A-grade material). Brian obviously ramped up productivity starting in the late 90s on his solo material, with widely mixed results.

I think the trick is to listen WITHOUT bias. We are all hardcore BB fans on this forum. Personally, I love a song like Marcella but the reality is that a song like that isn't meant for public consumption. I can find a treasure on every single BB album but to the casual listener, they want another Pet Sounds or worse ... another 'Fun, Fun, Fun'. Obviously, in a way Mike was right to bitch about the "formula" because Brian's ambitious music, which created a pop masterpiece also likely doomed them to peaking at #50 or higher on the charts with each and every single. That was either because he started making music WAY too far out there or because he had a breakdown and left the band hanging and forced other members to contribute more than they were capable of doing.

Friends - #47
Blue Birds over the Mountain - #61
Break Away - #63

Now, I will throw this to member HeyJude who is 1,000 times more eloquent than I am... do you think it was easier for the BB to make it big during their era (60s) than it was for someone like Petty in the 80s and 90s? It seems like in 1963 there was a lot less to do than say in 1994 when Petty released Wildflowers. In the early 90s Petty had to compete with Michael Jackson, grunge, the rise of the internet and the improvements in movies and video games. Unless I am wrong, in 1965 there were only three channels on TV making the appearance of the boys on Sullivan a HUGE deal.

Again, I say all this as a die hard BB fan looking for discussion on this awesome board.

I think the trick is to listen WITHOUT bias. We are all hardcore BB fans on this forum. I think you hit the nail on the head.  As much as I love the albums Friends, 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up, and Holland, if I were to play those to casual or non fans, they'd likely shrug their shoulders.  However, I can throw on something like Sounds of Summer (featuring mostly their 60s hits), to a crowd with diverse music tastes, and it would go over well.

I forgot to add ... AGEISM.
The boys made it in their prime, they were all young, handsome men with a heartthrob in the ripped Dennis Wilson.
By the 90s, Tom was considered an old fart but still defied logic and found some HUGE success when the popular, extremely MTV friendly bands of the time like Nirvana were making fun of "over the hill" rockers in their late 20s and early 30s from the hair metal days.

What I do is test out the music on my 6 year old daughter. She ADORES the early stuff and sings along with hits and non hits and loves Pet Sound favorites like Sloop John B and God Only Knows ... and her favorite song is Vegetables, obviously for its quirks but when something like a Marcella or Break Away plays in the car she zones out. She loves the 80s and early 90s stuff, though. Come Go With Me, Getcha Back, Kokomo, Problem Child, and Crocodile Rock she knows every word to.

The average casual fan is basically a 6 year old child.  :lol

It's like any band / artist that strays a bit from the mainstream.  Pink Floyd is my all time favorite band, but if I played any of their pyschadelic / experimental pre Dark Side of the Moon material for casual fans, they're usually unimpressed.

But is your argument about quality or popularity?  Because they are not the same thing.  I could list thousands of songs that charted higher than 63 but that doesn't mean that those songs are better than Break Away.  It just means that more people liked them.  Remember that song "Barbie Girl"?  It went to number one, despite being a complete piece of crap.  Chart positions are one thing; whether a song is good or not is a completely different issue.  (I'm not comparing Tom Petty to Aqua here, just using an extreme example to make a point).

And as far as listening without bias goes, that's what I'm doing.  Yes, I'm a hardcore BB fan (as is everyone here) but I'm a hardcore fan BECAUSE they are SO GOOD.  I'm not a hardcore fan because I think they're really cute or cool or whatever.  It's because the music won me over in a way that no other music ever has.

So, to get back to the Tom Petty thing, sure, I can see that a collaboration of some sort might have been cool and might have produced some genuinely good songs, as well as possibly some hits.  But I still firmly believe that the BB's output in the 70s is better than that of Tom Petty.  Whether songs like Break Away, Surf's Up, Till I Die, Marcella (I could go on and on) were popular with the general public does not factor into this assessment.  I just think their songs are better, period.

As I said, I'm not putting down Tom Petty.  I don't claim to be super knowledgeable about his stuff either so it's possible there's stuff of his that I don't know that I might love if I heard it.  But to use the phrase you used, the BB's most transcendent, highest peaks blow everyone else out of the water.  And even their lesser songs still always have something incredibly interesting in them.  Honestly, to me, the "worst" BB song is still going to be musically interesting, which I can't say about many other bands at all.  (The exception would be Mona, which I find incredibly boring on a musical level, though the lyrics make up for that.)

I think the difference there is that Aqua song is a novelty, but those Tom Petty songs have endured the test of time.

Granted, I don't really take chart position into account too much when it comes to music.

But, even as a huge fan, I think it's pretty easy to see that, post Good Vibrations, The Beach Boys' music shifted and had more of a niche appeal.

I had free trials, and have had it while driving rentals.   Those are short sample sizes, and I still heard a lot of repetition.   Plus, I just can bring myself to pay for radio.   Heck, I wouldn't even spring for Spotify Premium when they ran their $0.99 special.

I heard "They Still Believe In Me" on DT the other day...the stereo version with Brian's single-tracked lead vocal. Similar problem as with "Caroline, No" - although the vocals in this case sounded fine (the lead, at least), there was still this weird phasing anomaly, leading me to believe they might have played the 5.1 version by mistake. Otherwise, they must have had too much compression or limiting or something...the other stuff they play generally sounds OK, although other Sirrius channels sound way better (The Bridge, for instance, sounds fantastic in my car...as does The Beatles channel).

Having a lot of nervous energy I went to Dogstar Radio which has the playlists for each day on the regular and internet SiriusXM channels.

Yesterday they played:

In addition on the sixties channel they were requesting that people call a number and say what BB songs they like and other things. I only heard this once but according to Dogstar Radio this announcement was given numerous times yesterday

This could be in conjunction with a Beach Boys channel (don't know if it's temporary or not) that Al said during one of his shows would be on around Memorial Day (last Monday in May)

Once again, I didn't actually hear it...but this afternoon on Deep Tracks, Earl Bailey read off some tunes he'd just played - including "Beach Boy Dennis Wilson, from his solo album Pacific Ocean Blue - 'Rainbows'". It was part of some rainbow-themed string of songs...I think including something by Richie Blackmore's Rainbow. Damn, that would have been great to hear, unexpectedly!
