Title: Ten Years Of Harmony - A Favor Please
Post by: petsite on July 29, 2006, 09:26:08 PM
If someone has a copy of Brad Elliott's story about the assembly of this 2 LP set and could either post it here or e-mail me, I would be forever in your debt.

Thanks,

Bob Flory

The closest to a story about Harmony from Brad Elliott that I could find was this:

As for "Rock & Roll Music" (and "California Saga," too), the only time the
single mixes have been released on album was on the original vinyl and
cassette copies of the TEN YEARS OF HARMONY set from CBS in 1981. (The
later U.S. CD release of TYOH does NOT have the single versions of either
"R&RM" or "CS." The European CD does, but it was mastered from the master
tape for the original vinyl release and the sound is not great.)

Well, first you have to realize that Bruce's membership has not been
continuous. He joined as a touring replacement for Brian in 1965 and
probably became something more than that in 1966, when he was first included
in promo photos of the group. But he left in April 1972 (and there is
evidence the group was looking to boot him in 1969). He didn't return until
1978, when Brian asked him to sit in the producer's chair for L.A. (LIGHT
ALBUM). Even then, he swore (in various interviews) that he wasn't
returning to the group full-time, just stepping in to lend a hand. But they
needed help on the road, so he agreed to tour in the support of that album,
then got the nod to produce the next album (KTSA) and stuck around for that
tour, too. And he's just been there ever since. I'm not sure when he again
was elevated to the status of a "real" Beach Boy, but it's noting that he
wasn't pictured on the TEN YEARS OF HARMONY compilation that came out in the
fall of 1981 -- and that was quite deliberate. The rest of the group vetoed
using a photo that showed him, as well as including a small inset picture of
him to accompany the photo that was used of the other five.

When the group eventually signed with Warner Brothers early in 1970, "San
Miguel" was left off the first planned WB album, ADD SOME MUSIC, as well as
the revised version of that album released with the SUNFLOWER title. It
then was set for the next WB album (commonly referred to as LANDLOCKED),
but that album was shelved in favor of SURF'S UP. After that, the song lay
dormat and fogotten until it was remixed at M.I.U. for possible inclusion
on the MIU ALBUM. Dennis toyed with the idea of redoing the song for his
second (unreleased) solo album, BAMBOO, and even went as far as cutting a
new track for it. Eventually, the original version slipped out on the TEN
YEARS OF HARMONY compilation in late 1981.

Possible inclusion on MIU?! That would've stuck out like a sore thumb.

Thanks for the posting. I should have been clearer. The story I meant was the one in the old Add Some Music magazine. I have the review of the LP printed there but not the backstory that Brad wrote.

Again, thanks for the postings from landlocked.

I have the review (reprinted in ADD SOME MUSIC TO YOUR DAY), but not the article by Brad.
