Title: 'Wild Honey' (cover) by rab2591
Post by: rab2591 on September 14, 2016, 06:38:09 AM
I recorded this a month or two ago, and I'm finally getting around to posting it here. I decided to make a very chill/folk version of 'Wild Honey' - gone is the R&B feel. Instead it's acoustic guitar and layers of folk-esque harmony. It was a blast to record and I hope to do more like it in the future. Hope you enjoy!

My favorite version out of all the ones I've heard, both recorded and live. I love the mellow transformation and as I said before, this has a nice Band of Horses vibe. Great job.

That is sensational. Mellow is most definitely the word----and the bridge is pure genius.

More, please!

Excellent as always Rab.  So glad you changed it up and avoided the note-for-note cover idea, I love hearing people take creative liberty with songs instead of a straight copy.

Thank you for the kind comments everyone! It really means a lot! I hope to record a cover of 'Love and Mercy' in this style next and hopefully it doesn't take too long for that to get going.

Thanks again!

Fantastic.

Sibilance on the reverb send could be tempered.

Thanks all for the nice comments!

@Sam_BFC. I'm a sucker for reverb and it is a bit heavy here, but it gave the track the atmosphere I was looking for.

@KaylaWilliams, very much an honor to be recognized by you...love your covers! Thanks for listening

Nono the reverb is cool for sure...it was just a bit strong on some "s" consonants for me, though that could be in part down to my playback system! :)

Oh I get what you mean now! I notice it too in a lot of my recordings - any ideas as to what can solve this issue? I use a recording program for all of my music making (Logic Pro X). Thanks for further explaining what you meant!

Logic X? Cool, I have an old Logic 9 system though sadly get less time to "play" around on it these days...haven't ever had a go on Logic X, one day hopefully I will get my teeth into a future version if not X.

Sibilance...
I'm sure others are more qualified than me, but could be down to
Choice of mic
Recording vocals near to hard reflective surfaces
Once it's on the recording however, it can usually tamed with a de-esser plugin, either on the main vocal track or just on the reverb send...the downside is sometimes this can dull the rest of the vocal track even if it improves the sibilance.

I mean it's no biggie, I could never produce such a cool arrangement I truly enjoyed it.

I want rab to record an entire Beach Boys cover album in CSN influenced folk now.  ;D

Rab's covers are always fantastic. This is no exception. I love anything with a chill vibe.
I'd also love a Heroes & Villains made in this style. For all its harmonic gorgeousness, I've found it a surprisingly good song to do with just one voice and acoustic guitar. "Cantina" version of course.

Thanks so much and sorry it took so long to respond! I will definitely try to work on that for my next recordings. Logic X is incredible and I can only imagine that future versions will be even more powerful. Right now this program does more than I need to create tracks - so much so that I probably only know 5% of what this program can actually do.
_______

Thanks all for the kind comments. Niko, that Heroes and Villains cover took me wayyyyy the hell back. Not my best moment of recording at all haha, but maybe I'll do a far more chill version of it one of these days.

One of the best covers I've ever heard in terms of reinterpreting the feel without being too dissimilar to the original. Thanks for posting.
