Yes, I've seen filledeplage use that one before.  A good, and sometimes misunderstood, poster.

Nice oriiginal thread. My fav, of course, is this one:  :thewilsons   I like the  :woot  too, though I consider it OSD's personal propriety.
Among the "normal" ones:  :hat
And "normallest" of all, the good old smiley itself:  :)

At my other board (see my profile) I imported all the old Capitol Board emotes, as they were bigger and probably for old time's sake (I'd posted there for five years). Then the Cap Board closed down permanently so I had to find a new one with the same emotes. Then that new one folded. Hopefully the latest supplier of emotes will stay put for a while... ;=)

gotta say, I hate these new trendy words to mean good ole smiley, esp. very annoying "emoji". It makes no sense! How "t" got replaced to "j"? BIZARRE. "Smiley" is right term, full stop.

In my jaded view of things a smiley is just that----a smiling face: (http://forum.macbidouille.com/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

'Emoji' is actually a Japanese word meaning 'picture character' and actually has no relation to the English word 'emotion.' Graphic emoticons were first used on Japanese phones in the 90s, so the Japanese term was adopted. In English, we use 'emoji' for graphic and 'emoticon' for text-based 'smileys,' normally.
:-\ is my favorite, I think. I also enjoy  :happydance and  :old.

Cool info, thanks.

So either way it's "smiley". Nice to be confirmed.

There is unofficial smiley. When you write ":" + "D", it makes happy face :D

That smiley would be fitting to add after writing super-intellectual post. F.ex. "This scientific research was invented by the technological metods of empirism & traslucent X-rays reflect the microscopic species with the national geographic expedition according to the myriads of botanical conservatories at the Observatory with the assistence of reknowned collaborators in the sphere of entomology, as well as lunar shuttle space landings with which radioactive elements destroy the interplanetary oceanography :bw".

I'm rather taken with this one.

It has a lovely name: Hurl.

This one has been haunting me for months. What is it saying? One possible reading is "this post/topic is rambling on and on". It might also be saying, "on the one hand this but then again on the other...", i.e, I'm still out on some issue.

Any other ideas, folks?
