Growing up in the sixties I and my friends made fun of Elvis.
Then in the late 70s, in college, I heard Heartbreak Hotel for the first time. Thought "what the --!"
Decided to explore his music and have been a fan ever since.

One of the spookiest songs ever committed to wax.

Elvis's "Blue Moon" is another. I remember wandering into a dark empty room during a party in early '66 and hearing the Big E's eerie falsetto wail----scared the life out of me it did!

Boy, that is one of my all time favorite recordings. What an interpretation of that song. And letting out the mid-section was totally the right decision. That would have destroyed the mood.

Yes of course, no middle eight! I've never missed it, never even given it a thought. It's like the BB's "I Was Made To Love Her"----it's as if there never was a middle eight.

Of course, The Marcels made a meal of that missing middle eight five years later. ;D

One thing that I think should be mentioned is that "Heartbreak hotel" was fighting hard with another legendary Rock'n'Roll song for the No. 1 spot; "Blue suede shoes" by Carl Perkins. Here's a little documentary about that song:

Love Carl Perkins' songs----so many good ones, but particularly "Matchbox", ft. The Killer on piano.

That drum fill at the start of the first solo. Wow!

In the late 70s when I really got into rockabilly, remember getting at a used record store the 45 of Carl Perkins' Blue Suede Shoes bw Honey Don't. Also got 45 with Matchbox. Incredible stuff.

Cool article, curious title, lol. Maybe heartbreak hotels are so uncared for that even the letters on the front don't hold up...

Actually, I think it's because the author, Ana Sayfa, is Turkish and <hotel> in that language is <otel>. It got left in somehow...
