Title: What is your Smile Track Listing?
Post by: HeroesandVillains on July 12, 2016, 03:20:25 AM
While The Smile Sessions has a track listing almost identical to BWPS, What is your personal track listing for Smile?

Mine is as follows:

Side 1:

0) Our Prayer (Unlisted)
1) Heroes And Villains
2) Rock Plymouth Roll (Do You Like Worms?)
3) Barnyard
4) The Old Master Painter
5) He Gives Speeches
6) Look!
7) Cabin Essence

Side 2:

8 ) Good Vibrations
9) I Wanna Be Around/Workshop
10) Vega-Tables
11) Wonderful
12) Wind Chimes
13) Fire
14) Child Is The Father Of The Man
15) Surf's Up
16) You're Welcome (Unlisted)

I haven't included Holidays as I don't know where it would really fit into the album. Ditto with I'm In Great Shape.

The disc one TSS sequence works for me!

I was never satisfied with any personal sequence so it was a relief when the officially sanctioned version came out. It flows fine for me.

But if that's too pedestrian for the thread, I have been known to move I Wanna Be Around & Vegetables so that IWBA follows Fire  :o :o  :o

Yeah. The track listing on TSS works fine but I'm not a big fan of the whole suite stuff they have going on. It's criminal in my eyes to not have Surf's Up be the last track

I can only listen to it as a two-sided, 12 track album nowadays.

Side A:
1). Our Prayer
2). Heroes and Villains
3). Do You Like Worms?
4). Wonderful
5). I'm in Great Shape (IIGS/Barnyard/OMP)
6). Cabin-Essence

Side B:
1). Good Vibrations
2). Vega-Tables
3). Wind Chimes
4). Mrs. O'Leary's Cow
5). Child is Father of the Man
6). Surf's Up
7). You're Welcome (Hidden Track)

Unfortunately, "Look", "Holidays", "Workshop", and "I Love to Say Dada" were nixed to keep it as close to an actual LP record as possible.

Mine is:

"You are Welcome" as opener (I see a lot of you guys use it at the end, it's shocking to me because after all, it's a welcome song ;D Plus it begins with a great fade-in).
+
The TSS tracklist
+
"Tune X" as the closing track, it works great as a goodbye song.

I know we've had threads like this before, but I'll play along. After a lot of years I've gotten to a place where I am satisfied with my sequencing. Until something new is unearthed (I believe in my heart there is more to come) I feel like this is Smile for me (all stereo). It mostly follows the order of the December '66 Capitol memo.

Side 1
(Prayer)
1)Worms (with insert of Holidays a la BWPS' On A Holiday)   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWCh80PqEes
goes right into
2)H&V (a 5:46 Cantina version)
(George Fell Into His French Horn)
3)Surf's Up (without CIFOTM ending)
4)Good Vibrations (a 5:28 extended version)    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ef0H1Tl7Js
5)Cabin Essence

Side 2
(He Gives Speeches)
1)Wonderful
goes right into
2)CIFOTM comprised of Look(seltaeb's edit with vocals)/CIFOTM
3)Wind Chimes (with Whispering Winds fade)
4)The Elements comprised of LTSD Second Day-Air/Mrs, O'Leary-Fire (no H&V intro)/LTSD-Water (no chant)/IWBA & Workshop- Earth    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JYwBNIPRAQ
(Brian Falls Into A Piano)
5)Vega-Tables
(H&V Reprise)
6)IIGS comprised of IIGS/Barnyard/IIGS/Do A Lot (with whistling)/IIGS/With Me Tonight
goes right into
7)The Old Master Painter comprised of TOMP/YWMS /My Children Were Raised/Barnshine

It runs about 57 minutes.

I agree with this.  I can certainly see not using it, but I've never understood how anyone would think it's appropriate at the end.

And the YW fade-in works really well as an opener, in my opinion, vs. Prayer, which just hits you over the head, and is much better near or at the end.

Plus it is in the same key as H&V, while Prayer is not.

My personal opinion is that while Prayer is a perfect opener for an album named "Dumb Angel", it sucks as an opener for an album named "SMiLE" with that cover. It is way too majestic and minor-key.

Is there any real evidence that Surf's Up was intended to be the closing track?

I don't think so but due to its sound and its content, I'm not sure what could possibly follow it while having it sound right.

Likewise, Surf's Up is not a good closer for an album named SMiLE. Here's my 12 track listing:

A.
1. You're Welcome
2. H&V
3. Cabin Essence
4. DYLW
5. On A Holiday
6. Wonderful
7. Song For Children

B.
1. CIFOTM
2. The Elements (V-T - LTSDD - Wind Chimes - MOLC)
3. Surf's Up
4. Prayer
5. Good Vibrations

By sheer coincidence, these two sides with my own edits clock in nearly the same length, just over 22:40 min each, thuns the whole album just over 45 minutes, still shorter than "Aftermath". Another neat thing is that side A ends with the melody that is reprised in GV which ends side B.

Im toying with the idea to change side B to:

1. CIFOTM
2. Surf's Up
3. The Elements (MOLC - Wind Chimes - LTSDD - V-T)
4. Prayer
5. Good Vibrations

That would leave the 2nd movement of BWPS intact - you would just have to flip the disc in the middle of the movement.

My order follows Heroes and Villains with the fadeout from Heroes and Villains Pt. 2 (similar to The Old Master Painter one, but lazier).

Hello, I'm a very occasional poster and daily lurker (good name for a newspaper that) - I posted my mix of Smile at the end of last year to general indifference, which may well have been because its crap!  Anyhow, I'm gonna post it again like it or not!   Here's my original post:

My attempt at Smile ...well I say mine; if someone else has already made a track sound as good as I believe it possibly can, there's no reason for me to tinker with it.   So the album includes huge chunks of the fine work of soniclovenoize and a touch of shangaijoeBB.
My own efforts owe a lot to the Share A Smile compilation from way back as this was the first Smile fan mix I owned and a lot of it has stuck with me, they're made up from segments from The Smile Sessions and soniclovenoise's mixes - most of my edits and mixes appear on side 2.
I'm definitely of the school of thought that Smile should be 12 (well 13 with Our Prayer) tracks rather than suites and I've also uploaded it as two separate sides because that's how an album should be godammit!  Anyway, here goes:

SIDE 1
1. Our Prayer (TSS version)
2. Heroes & Villains (shangaijoeBB)
3. The Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine (TSS)
4. Do You Like Worms? (soniclovenoize)
5. Wonderful (TSS)
6. Child Is Father of the Man (TSS - with a small edit by me)
7. Cabin Essence (TSS with addition by me at the end)

http://www107.zippyshare.com/v/DgsWTIUs/file.html

SIDE 2
1. Good Vibrations (TSS version with edit by me)
2. Wind Chimes (soniclovenoize)
3. Vega-Tables (my mix inc a bit from Share A Smile)
4. The Elements (my mix)
5. I'm In Great Shape (my mix)
6. Surf's Up (TSS version with small edit by me)

http://www107.zippyshare.com/v/nkPK2jy6/file.html

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy and would welcome your comments.

Cheers, Matt

What is 'Swedish frog'?

That's from the "Heroes and Villains-sections" part of the SMiLE box set. Brian and co making really weird and (dare I say, orgasmic) sounds. Pretty funny.

I used the 'animal noises' part of Swedish Frog in my version of I'm In Great Shape and the 'orgasmic'(?!) part in my The Elements.

Yes, I isolated from the other Heroes and Vilains sections and put it in as an additional part (just didn't know it was called Swedish frog).  I love it.
Also used the fadeout from 'Heroes and Villains: Pt. 2' after H&V.

I just listened to some vintage Brian mix's, and lined up Vegetables (october '66 mix) and Old master painter (presumably November '66 mix), and was surprised how two of them work good together side by side. Listen to this VT mix with that "old cowboy piano" feel and OMP with also C&W feeling!
And let's not forget that these two were last two songs on Smile tracklist!
This Smile is really incredable, so many possible variations!

Interesting, particularly given the fact that OMP/YAMS was at one point associated with H&V. The content notwithstanding, I have a feeling there was a connection between H&V and Vega-Tables that never came to fruition (no pun intended). The fact that Eat A Lot was once part of H&V reinforces this and that they ended up side-by-side on Smiley is another indication. I have separated them on my mix above but perhaps I should try positioning them closer together, along with OMP. Maybe Great Shape plays a role in this too...

I'm making a new stereo mix... Side One is completed, and Side Two is still in the works, so allow me a few more weeks/months, Dig! (I have put up the tracklisting for Side Two [which is the same from my previous mix, so don't come down on me for 'rebranding', please!])

Side One- American Gothic Trip (19:48 minutes)

1. Prayer/Good Vibrations (Our Prayer, followed by Brian Fell Into A Mircophone circling around the stereo speakers, then an EQ-d 2012 Stereo Remix of GV, just to make the vocals a tad more 'authentic', y'know?)

2. Heroes and Villains (90% of the structure of this mix is based off the February 1967 edit Brian made. The verses [Ive Been In This Town] circle around your speakers in frenzy, since a proper stereo for these bits are lacking. Then it goes into Cantina, and My Children Were Raised. The final bit [Three Score and Five] pans around, then aburptly cuts to the 'Bridge to Indians', so it could connect to 'Worms.'

3. Do You Like Worms? (This is the SonicLoveNoize mixdown. Some differences include echoes after the Bicycle Rider bit, just because I felt psychedelic!)

4. I'm In Great Shape/Out In The Barnyard (GS is the Sonic mix. Barnyard is my own mix (inspired by the Sonic mix, but with one notable difference, that difference being that it doesn't fade out, and it crossfades into OMP made by combining two different backing tracks, so its not completely 'Duo-phonic', since the animals sounds makes rounds from speaker to speaker)

5. The Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine (Faded from Barnyard. The Old Master part is from the instrumental master takes, and from the You Are My Sunshine part to the end is Sonic's mix)

6. Cabin Essence (Who Ran The Iron Horse?) (Sonic's mix)

7. Wonderful (This is interesting. I used the mono mix found on Disc 1 from Smile Sessions, but it starts from one speaker, and slowly moves to the other as the song progresses. Could you imagine the entire band going around your room? Now you can!)

Side B- (God, Laughter and The Elements)

8. A Song For Children (Instrumental)

9. On a Holiday (Instrumental)

10. Wind Chimes

11. The Elements: Mrs. O' Leary's Cow (Fire) [Instrumental]

12. The Elements: Air Pollution Rant (Air)

13. The Elements: My Vega-Tables (Earth)

14. The Elements: Cool Cool Water (Water)

15. Child Is The Father of The Man

16. Surf's Up

1. CIFOTM

Micha, you're a genius!

Thank you! :) Really, you think so? What is so genius in my list compared to the others' in your opinion?

BTW, my H&V mix ends with OMP/MOS/fade with MOS lyrics. The only famous SMiLE part I left out is IWBA/Workshop. Didn't fit anywhere, and suprisingly I don't miss it.

I'm very glad to see someone else putting together Worms and Cabin Essence. To me, I can't imagine that it was ever possible that they were meant to be apart.

Me too, I just heretically put CE before DYLW, as CE ends on a Cmin7 chord, and DYLW begins with its resolution F. Actually edited it right into the fade.

BTW, if you're interested, this (http://www.michael-fredrich.de/Vega-Michas.mp3) is the version of Vega-Tables (http://www.michael-fredrich.de/Vega-Michas.mp3) I cooked up as part of The Elements.

The fact you used You're Welcome as an opener to HV, and used to Prayer to connect SU and GV is quite commendable.

So, this is my first attempt to come out of the closet with Smile mix! ;D

Something I mixed for fun, but seems to work out out just fine!

To be honest this is just my mash up of other people mixes and ideas, so thank you Jiggy22, Old Master Painter, Judd, Memory Man, Holly Bee, Krabklaw, Jacob...can't think of anyone else involved in this mash up, but I think that's all...

At this time I don't know where to put this in my mix, maybe nowhere ???, but it's kind of fun to put this little mash ups together :)

Enjoy!

Would following Our Prayer with 'Worms' be justified? What key is end of Prayer and the beginning of Worms in?

If you put a few seconds of silence in between I don't think it matters. That's the sequence I use too. And after DYLW I put H&V.

It's always justified if you personally like it.

BTW Our Prayer ends in A#, which is the resolve (the second chord) of Do You Like Worms.

Sonic, I just read your explanation for your 1967 Smile mix. It's pure gold, makes so PERFECT sense! You must be the Sherlock Holmes of Smile fans, and no irony. Looking forward to listen to the result, it may be the nearest thing to a completed 1967 Smile we can have. :)

Oh thanks!

The only changes I would have made since then is a three-minute edit of Child is Father of The Man, much like Brian's test edits; and an Elements that used the different takes of Dada spliced together with the three elemental Psychedelic Sounds chants in the breaks of each (instead of just solely 'water' chants).

Not sure if I'll ever revise my posted mix, but if I did, those are the changes I'd make.

I Think That the track labelled in TSS as "Heroes and Villains Part bag of tricks" was the inner groove of Surf Up (In the style of Caroline No Dogs and Trains or the A Day in the life collage)

If you don´t know what section i´m talking: https://www.beatport.com/track/heroes-and-villains-part-1-tag-original-mix/3079431

I listened to your 1967 Smile mix and it's simply fantastic, as I was expecting given your explanations. Highlights (imho): the Old Master Painter coda and the Water section in The Elements (brilliant!). Thanks!
The only thing I miss is a Heroes and Villains Part 2 as a bonus track. I appreciate that you went for a "not kitchen sink" H&V, but the H&V sessions are not the kitchen sink, they rank among the most brilliant music ever, and can't simply be left on the cutting floor. :)
Anyway, thanks!!!!

How about this strange mix that Zeppo Wilson did on 11th February 1967 when Brian left studio to get burgers, and told Capitol it is the new single they've been waiting from Brian, and guess what? It stopped Penny Lane from being #2 in Britain, of course it didn't get to #1 cause of E. Humperdinck  :-D, and of course bombed in US, reaching only #9!  ;D
Big tnx to Seltaeb!

This is my attempt at what a 1972 SMiLE Album would had sounded like. This particular mix presents the SMiLE music more as a "progressive rock album" approach of the material. Kudos to the heaps of work from Scott G, soniclovenoize, krabklaw, bruiteur, DJ Mic Luv and ESPECIALLY seltaeb for his various SMiLE A.D. mixes (check it out it's awesome!). Enjoy (on headphones, please)!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykPqnuVPmwU&feature=youtu.be

projected release date fall 1972

02 Barnyard
03 The Old Master Painter (incorporating He Gives Speeches)
04 You Are My Sunshine
05 Cabin Essence (incorporating Who Ran The Iron Horse)

Side B (24:28)

06 Vega-Tables
07 Wind Chimes
08 'The Fire suite'

12 Surf's Up

My SMiLE track list was created by listening to the various little bits and assembling them how I felt musically they fit together.

Your Welcome
Heroes and Villains Part 1 (a remade Cantina version with dual Brian/Mike vocals for the verses and restoring the full Cantina section)
Do You Like Worms?
Surf's Up
Great Shape/Barnyard/Old Master Painter/You Were My Sunshine
With Me Tonight/Bag of Tricks/Eat A Lot/With Me Tonight (utilising fast With Me Tonight from Hawthorne and the slow version from the SMiLE Sessions)
Old Man River (my own edit using parts of both released versions)
Cabinessence
Heroes and Villains Part 2 (my own edit using various part 2 sections and the chorus from Heroes and Villains plus an alternative of Bag of Tricks and My Children were raised)
Wonderful
Look
Child is Father of the Man (my own edit)
Our Prayer
Good Vibrations
Fire
I Wanna Be Around/Workshop
Vegetables (my own edit)
Holidays
Wind Chimes
Love to Say Dada/Cool Cool Water (my own edit using parts of All Day as well)
Diamond Head/Little Pad/Diamond Head (my own edit)
