Title: Guilty pleasure Beach Boys songs
Post by: You Kane, You Commanded, You Conquered on March 05, 2016, 05:51:47 PM
Any songs that you feel a little bit of shame for enjoying? Personally, I find the discofied Here Comes The Night is actually pretty good, even at 11 minutes, and Student Demonstration Time rocks, 'cept for the lyrics.

Among others, I'd include most of the debut album, "Match Point Of Our Love", the disco "Here Comes The Night" and the blissfully cheesy "Make It Big"

I have loved Match Point Of Our Love from the first listen and will never feel any guilt about it. But that's not the point of this thread, is it? OK, I know. I think that's one that is usually seen as one of their worst songs, but I really enjoy Belles of Paris.

California Calling - I don't get the hate this song gets.  I think it's one of the better songs on BB85.

Other than the Here Comes the Night disco version, I like most of MIU/LA.

Kokomo - I don't care.  I like this song.  Always have.

Daybreak Over the Ocean

Anything from the 80's. I grew up with that era of the band, so i am partial to a lot of that material.

Hey Little Tomboy and Roller Skating Child make me feel guilty!

Title: Re: Guilty pleasure Beach Boys songs

I like "All Dressed Up For School" and "Hey Little Tomboy".

I always sing along to 'Hey Little Tomboy' (M.I.U. version, although I find the Adult Child version with the "now let's put a dress on and wear a little make-up" and "okay now, shave your legs now for your first time" comments inappropriately hysterical for a band that was portrayed to the public as being 'squeaky clean'.

"Roller Skating Child" is another fun song to sing in the car. The words are so goofy but it was sung like they really mean it. I like the live 1979 version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Cu0SCxEths). It is more uptempo and sounds like they were having fun. Al blows his lines and you can hear him laughing. Speaking of Al, "Honkin' Down the Highway" is another guilty pleasure. "Gosh-darn highway?" Love it.

But Roller Skating Child sounds creepy because Mike is singing a song about making sweet love to the 'Roller Skating Child' - the concept of which was inspired by Brian's daughters going ice skating (https://40.media.tumblr.com/92589f007104051b8edbe566697d1303/tumblr_ns20qse72z1trpswuo2_1280.jpg). Then you have lines like "...we'll make sweet loving when the sun goes down, We'll even do more when your mama's not around"... The implication is that they are making 'sweet loving' when the mother is still there, isn't it? LOL.  And after making 'sweet loving' what else are they going to do when her Mama's not around? Anal?

Anyways, on with guilty pleasures.

Every summer mix tape I have includes "Almost Summer" (and often "Cruisin" from the same album), "It's a Beautiful Day", Chasin' The Sky" and "Keepin' The Summer Alive". The Last two rock and I always wished Carl put out a solo album with this type of music as his voice is perfect for it.

I like Summer in Paradise, not least for  the Roger McGuinn guest vocal. Just about the only good thing about that album.

I love the performance of Student Demonstration Time.  I could even look past the lyrics if not for that irritating siren sound effect.

In one sense, more or less anything from 1976 - 1993  ;D,  Pacific Ocean Blue and BW88 excluded.

Also, any Bruce Johnston-written song.

The older I get though, the more guilt-free I feel listening to those eras for what they are. Dammit, I even like some of Mike Love's solo work and Summer in Paradise  :hat

More seriously, I think there is more good stuff from 76-93 than is often said, it's just that some of it suffers from either over-glossy production (85-93) or at times rough vocals (76-82). As a fantasy, it would be nice to imagine BW and the surviving boys got together now and did an album re-recording some of the best songs from this era with better vocals and a more 'timeless' production, just keeping all of Carl's vocals intact :).

"Tears In The Morning" is all I ever knew about Sunflower until 2003. Heck, I hadn't even heard of Sunflower until then!

I remember "Tears" got quite a bit of radio play in the UK in late 1970 but failed to chart.

I have no problems with it----more of a soft spot, actually.

That wasn't really directed at you.  So I apologize if it came off that way.

Hey Little Tomboy, Roller Skating Child, and Lazy Lizzie - I know it's not PC to like them but I do!!

Also a big fan of It Takes a Mess of Help which doesn't get much love around here.

I don't feel guilty about any of their music anymore, I just love them so much. Although I'd feel weird if I played these songs in front of someone

Still Cruisin (Dumb lyrics but catchy song with some nice guitar and vocals)

Fall Breaks And Back To Winter (I'm sure most people would have a strange face on if they heard me play this but it is absolutely brilliant)

Sunshine on KTSA (great melody and exuberant vocals that I love.. real cheesy Caribbean type of sound on it but I love it)

Hey Little Tomboy, Roller Skating Child, Honking On The Highway [lyric: taking one little inch at a time now/until we're feeling fine now], I Want To Pick You Up (songs like these have some creepy lyrics, downright pedo type stuff but I know these guys don't mean any harm and I find them absolutely hilarious)

Island Girl (cheesy but some great vocals once again, especially from Carl)

Male Ego (cheesy again, with really dumb lyrics, but this is classic Mike/Brian songwriting right here)

Most of MIU or KTSA in general. Cheesy but fun as hell

I'm Bugged At My Ol' Man (really stupid but yet creepy and sad in an interesting way)

Rock N Roll Music, Chapel Of Love and some other 15 Big Ones stuff

There's so many "guilty pleasures" but that's why I love them. They are a unique band that were intent on being themselves, and they didn't make much effort to be overly serious or pretentious in anyway just to impress people. I'd rather have a whole album of "Sunshine" rather than stuff like "Student Demonstration Time".

'All I Want To Do (Live In London 1968)' - MiC

The entirety of BB85. I don't know if it's the blatant 80s production, but it's got such a really cohesive sound with some solid tracks.

'Getcha Back' is probably my favorite Mike Love song ever. In fact I was at first under the assumption that it was a Brian Wilson song until I later on looked at the credits. A knockout of an opener and Brian's falsetto (whether or not it's looped/whatever for each chorus) makes this song really shine. That outro too. Just all around a great song.

Parts of 'It's Getting Late' sound like a recent song from the current top-40 band the Chainsmokers. 'She Believes In Love Again', 'I'm So Lonely', 'Crack At Your Love', etc...It's really a solid album when you keep in mind their other albums released in that decade/era.

Crack At Your Love is my archetypal guilty pleasure song. I honestly believe there is Brian Wilson greatness buried in there - just hard to get to through all the 80s synths and the inescapable anal imagery of the title.

Despite the upbeat production, the song oozes sadness. Imagine Brian hammering the middle eight out on a piano in that gruff wounded-bear Cocaine Sessions howl of his -

In my mind, in my mind ....

Greatness I tells ya!
I have never thought of this song that way before.  The production really hams the whole thing up.  Thinking about the song stripped down however, it does sound really melancholic don't you think?  Perhaps I'll cover it...  ;)

Yes, I really do think the song has a beautiful melody which the hammy production (as you say) does it's best to disguise. You can feel the melancholy in the chords which makes the song fascinating because it seems to contradict itself. I think if you're familiar with Brian's writing, you can pick up on that melancholy thing. Of course it's a co-write with Al, but the melody sounds very Brian to my ears.

I'd love to hear you do an alternative treatment if you get round to it. Make sure you post it here!

Somewhere Near Japan and Crack At Your Love a bit embarrassing

Crack At Your Love is my archetypal guilty pleasure song. I honestly believe there is Brian Wilson greatness buried in there - just hard to get to through all the 80s synths and the inescapable anal imagery of the title.

Despite the upbeat production, the song oozes sadness. Imagine Brian hammering the middle eight out on a piano in that gruff wounded-bear Cocaine Sessions howl of his -

Lonely nights
Lonely days
Lonely nights
Lonely days
I'm reaching out for you
In my mind, in my mind ....

Greatness I tells ya!

I couldn't agree more. It would have been better if it were produced better than with all those dated 80s synths, but the song grew on me a lot. The title makes me laugh a lot with its unintentional humor. Only Brian would title that for a song. I've been playing the chords on guitar on and off and there are definitely some nice chord changes and the verse melody is great.

Male Ego is another guilty pleasure of mine. Cheesy and hilarious lyrics, and pure Brian Wilson songwriting that reminds me of Love You.

I like anything with Al lead, even "Crocodile Rock". He shifts any bad song to good.

I like anything with an Al OR Carl lead.  I stumbled upon the guys singing the Late Night Top 10 list from 1994 on you tube last night.  Man was that good.  A David Letterman Top 10 list and Carl sang the absolute crap out of it.
Nice to see another Al fan. It seems like he's very underrated among BBs fans. Some poster even praised Bruce before Al & he's not even original BB. But "Al is just Al".

Is that video where Matt Jardine was? There's video with Letterman talking in-between & BBs changing lyrics to their songs to match the Top 10 content. There was Matt singing with the BBs. Carl is great singer but I wouldn't be total about him. There's some leads, esp. from the 70s which imo were Carl's worst. Tastes differ. :)

Re: CAYL - "crack" means "drug", right? I do not see the humor in drug reference.

Al had one of the best voices in the BBs.. And he still has conserved his voice a hell of a lot which is impressive.

"Crack" in this case is not the drug, it is an old expression, like "shot" or "a try", ie. "Recording? I want to get a crack at that guitar part again". Its just such a cheesy thing that is so very Brian and is funny.

I have many guilty pleasure Beach boys songs but I just love Solar System . It's something about that  moog base, the sometimes wobbly background harmonies and the child like lyrics. I love astronomy but that track gets me every time. I was shocked to find out it was my most played Spotify track in 2016!

Hey Little Tomboy is catchy as hell! Just don't sing it in public though...

I've always liked Tears in the Morning.

People call it melodramatic, but I'd bet they'd call it a masterpiece if Dennis had written it.

Mentioned this in the Sunflower thread already, but I'm a fan, too. The ending is beautiful, but I always forget that it's there.

Because he'd of done it more soulful instead of Bruce who was more bubblegum beauty.

I never listen to the Beach Boys around other people. Not because they're a guilty pleasure, but because they're so personal to me that I'd feel weird listening to them with anyone.

Does Day In The Life Of a Tree count

I've seen that song dismissed so many times as a joke. I find it so much more haunting than Till I Die.
