I'm thinking of the Spiderman and Captain America films that were made in the 70s and they were pretty god awful.

It would have been inspired casting, that's for sure. Dennis had the aura, the body and knew how to move on a surfboard. Plus, he already had some acting experience. I don't mean to say it would have been a good film, but probably a remarkable piece of pop culture.
Let's stay with the fan-casting for a moment.
