(((((((((Carl)))))))))

You're missed here man.  BUT...Where you currently reside in the great wide open?
Well...to quote Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield...I "know they have a heluva band."  :hat

Thanking you, Carl, for being the person you were with your class, kindness and talent you brought to the world of music. I'm also thanking my lucky stars that I was fortunate enough to have the pleasure of your company for far too few precious moments over the years. Happy birthday.

The soul of the Beach Boys. As much as we love and covet the idea of the surviving members reuniting, we must always remember that it cannot be, it will not be anything close to the same as when Carl was keeping the summer alive with a blend of the band's early hits and their greatest artistic achievements.

He was taken from us much too soon, and if he were with us today, I am confident that the factions in the band would be significantly less toxic.

Fondest birthday greetings and thank you for so much.  I never got to meet you on Earth other than through your music.  From all accounts, you were a gentleman and a gentle man.  You fought the good fight as best you could.

I was honored to shake hands with your brother Brian and your old friends Al and Blondie on Dennis's birthday.  I'm sure they miss you in ways we'll never know.

Rest in peace.  As long as your music lives, you'll live in those of us who listen to it.

Thank you for everything Carl, I'll see you up there some day...

I can't believe it's been almost twenty years!  :o I remember the day I found out he passed. The world became a little colder that day.

71 years ago today it all began.  'There' when it counted...as the leader live on stage...and as an important muse for Brian to bounce his creative production ideas off of during the glory days, Carl Wilson's time to really shine in all aspects of the bands' evolution happened between 1967 and the tail end of 1973.  Carl helped to set the Beach Boys up as a real and meaningful force and one of the TOP touring Rock [and roll] acts in the world.

And then...the infighting for control began to unfurl and subsequently unravel what had been SO outstanding.

Happy Birthday Carl Wilson.  Your name and legacy live on...the contributions all recorded for people to see and hear.  Thank you.

Sorry...I didn't see the Sheriff's Carl thread 'til I had finished writing and posting...Mods...please delete my thread and add my post to the other thread. :-[

Happy Birthday Carl!  My favorite BB.  An amazing musician and, based on everything I've ever read or heard, an incredible person.

I'm glad I lived during time when Carl lived. There's overlap (Dennis died before I arrived).
As we see, Carl's legacy continues to be. Many fans say GOK can't be beat by anybody. 100% true - be it major artists or indie artists, they didn't get it right as Carl did. There's 100+ covers - obvious & obscure - but nobody sang it equally well & beautifully. They right about shouldn't even sing it in the 1st place. But, at the same time, it shows they really liked the song in the whole, including Carl's lead, that they were tempted to try it.
Carl will be in old-timers & new fans' brains & hearts for many years by.

Let's face it, folks--even if Mike & Bruce came back into the fold, we would still not have "the Beach Boys" without Carl and Dennis. And Carl in particular, because he was the one who held things together so many times, in so many ways.

So many incredible lead vocals. And while his song output for the BBs was sparse, his batting average was high.

And he was willing to stretch the group's sound in ways that even Brian might not have been so inclined to do. "Mess of Help" is as much Carl's as Brian's, performance-wise, and reminds us that a true BW "rock'n'roll album" would benefit immensely from (what is sadly an impossible) collaboration with his Chuck Berry-loving "little brother."

Thanks for everything, Carl. Man, do we miss you! Will be listening to you today--your "birthday present" to me--and to "this whole world."

Dec. 21 – the birthday of one of (if not THE) greatest vocalists/musicians/entertainers of all time … and a genuinely good person to boot.

If you're looking down on us, Carl:  Happy Birthday, great man.  You're still missed after all these years.

Carl was the peacemaker; he liked to say that he had a good relationship with everyone in the band. That's a good thing to be remembered for.

I found this on youtube. Here's what the user mentions:

The Beach Boys -- "God Only Knows" Live 1997 (Carl's Last Recorded Performance)

Perhaps the last recorded performance of "God Only Knows" by Carl Wilson, recorded August 2, 1997 with The Beach Boys at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, CA. If anyone has any information about a reported August 4th recording that exists, please let me know. This was recorded in the midst of Carl's battle with lung cancer; by this time he sat on a stool for each performance and required oxygen after some songs. "God Only Knows" was the one song that he would unfailingly stand for at each performance, and as evidenced by this vocal here, his vocal talent had not diminished one bit, with no discernible phrasing differences between this rendition and those from previous years. A remarkable recording through and through.

I have a recording of August 3 at the Blockbuster Pavilion, I was at the show. I am not aware of any show on August 4.  It is certainly possible other, later recordings exist as Carl played 16 more shows  between August 9 and his last performance on August 29.
