Based on the original 1979 version, not the new Mike Love recording

And for the non-Spotify people:

Nice! I like that swooping synth----has sort of a Garth Hudson feel to it...

Better than Mike's new version, but I'll take the original 1977 track!

Easily takes the crown for the worst Xmas song ever. Predictable, cheesy, lame and will be long forgotten sooner than later.  :-D

It has some cool chord changes, don't you think? It's not that bad.

The worst BB-related Xmas song ever has to be Santa's Going to Kokomo. No worse candidate.

You're right but this thing is a close runner up. Very close.

I really liked it, especially after Mike's atrocity.

It's quite a nice version, isn't it? I do wish Mike's new version didn't have the horrible autotune on it -- without it, it'd be the best solo thing he's ever done. With it, it's unlistenable :-/
This one's very pleasant, though. Not something I'll buy, but if I heard it in a shop or something I'd be quite happy.

I agree with you. Phoenix kept to the original arrangement for the most part, whereas Mike gave his new release more of a Phil Spector feel.

I saw the special last night and really enjoyed it. I thought their rendition of Mike's song was fine and Mike gets a song credit in a Bill Murray special which is pretty cool.

Jolly good. Def. better than Mike's version. I've no idea who these Phoenix are but I'd suggest this is their usual "sound"? I like the whistle-y synths.

Very good version that actually makes the song sound better than it really is - good arrangement and the lead vocal is head and shoulders above Mikes lead on the original - the auto tuned atrocity on the new version not even being worthy of mention.

Saw 'A Very Murray Christmas' last night as well, and this track was an unexpected surprise. To me, I like the lo-fi nature of it. It adds a nice homespun element. Nicely done.

The program itself is quite odd (in a good way). It's got the classic Murray mannerisms, and almost seems a hodgepodge of Nick the Lounge Singer and Lost in Translation. At any rate, it's nice holiday fare. Equal parts holiday special and Christopher Guest put-on. Check it out - exclusive for Netflix.

Love the fact that an old unreleased chestnut has been revisited.

Mike's version is cool, but the Phoenix version with Bill Murray is far and away my preferred guilty pleasure.  The song's performance in "A Very Murray Christmas" is also the special's loosest moment … and, Bill Murray, bless his heart, returns to his "Nick The Lounge Singer" act.  The amount of fun Murray was having with Paul Shaffer, Jason Schwartzman, Buster Poindexter, speaks to the vast reach of The Beach Boys music.

The RECORD STORE DAY picture sleeve 45 is a beautiful ode to Christmas singles of the past.
