LOS ANGELES (AP) - Grammy Award-winning singer Lou Rawls has died of lung cancer in Los Angeles. He was 72. The velvet-voiced singer started as a church choir boy and went on to sell more than 40 million albums. He won three Grammy Awards in a career that spanned nearly five decades and a range of genres. Rawls died this morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was hospitalized last month. ....who died from smoking related cancer. RIP Title: Re: Lou Rawls Dies at 72 Post by: Boxer Monkey on January 06, 2006, 05:18:26 PM Actually, Rawls said he hadn't smoked in something like 35 years. And he never sounded, um, "smoky" to me. Not like, say, Marianne Faithful or somebody.
A real loss, though. Until I read his obit, I wasn't aware of his work with Sam Cooke. But Rawls was truly great in his own right. And plucked from the obscurity of Pandora's Box by Nik Venet. Good ears on that guy! |
