Title: David marks
Post by: the professor on October 16, 2015, 07:00:02 PM
I would not post this unless I saw that carrie marks has already posted something which was passed on to me by Eric. The professor is at the Surf City Allstars show then to have heard that David marks of the Beach Boys has been hospitalized today. I will continue to follow as everyone will whatever information comes out. But I am myself in the state of anxiety and shock sitting here in the front row before the show is about to begin without David. I am focusing all my energy on good wishes for David and sending this message of deep love and devotion to him as one of our great heroes who has brought us so much incredible pleasure over the years, and we can't wait to hear from him and to see him back burning those great classic guitar solos and playing that toes to the nose rhythm so central to beach boy music. Here's to you Dave. Please get well and know that we love you very much.

 Posted by Carrie earlier:

Lack of ticket sales tonight literally broke David's heart. He was admitted to the hospital with severe chest pain this morning where he had a 99% blockage of his aorta removed and 3 stints put in. The doctor said it was a miracle he didn't just drop dead of a massive heart attack. I'm still a little in shock, but he's resting comfortably and arguing with me about whether or not his romance with Cheetos is over. It is!

The show is getting a late start, but it does not appear to be cancelled. the promoter told me the show would be played in dave's honor. The crowd is very small, & I never would have heard about the show if Erica had not posted it on this board. So something must have gone wrong with the promotion. Most of the people here heard about it in local newsletters concerning things to do in the South Bay. Something must have gone very wrong with the whole advertisement of the show. Many many many people would want to flock to see these all stars and to see Dave. The attendance tonight is no real reflection of Dave's popularity and of the role that this music has in Southern California, national, and global history. I am sure that Mike and Bryan and Al and Bruce are monitoring the situation and keeping in touch and showing support for Dave. This of course is just my feeling about how these beachboys care for each other, & I do look forward to hearing more and good news about Dave's recovery.

Very best of wishes. I love David Marks.

My 82-year old uncle survived an emergency quadruple bypass + aortic valve replacement recently, and David's a spring chicken by comparison... so he can beat this, no doubt. It can be done!

I hope the other Beach Boys can all put their differences aside once and for all (and beyond this incident... from this point on), and rally around his side. I'd be surprised if Brian and Mike don't (at the very least) speak on the phone about this.

Please stay with us, Dave.

The show so far is a surreal experience. The band is speaking lovingly of davr and said that they want to do justice to the songs for his sake. The lead guitarist who is filling in for most of the parts that Dave would be playing is doing a good job, but it's very clear that he did not expect to play some of those parts.  they are soldiering on for the sake of the show and of the music and of dave. But on all the great fills and solos, which Dave plays in the beach boy shows, and many  of which he also played on the records,  it is quite clear that after Carl  no one in the world can play those parts except dave.

I am heading back in for the second half now, feeling of the power of the music and yet at once feeling so miserably and inexplicably lonely.

A special treat to have seen & heard you in Manchester and London this year, looking forward to the next concerts here, with whichever band! Good vibes!

Just posted on FB:
Tonight after getting off stage at Eastern Kentucky University, I called home, and Jacquelyne told me the news that David Marks was in the hospital. I want David to know that we are all sending him our prayers, good vibrations and wishes for a complete recovery. I'd like to remind him that I think it would be a great time to practice his TM. The deeper rest will help him heal. Peace and Love, Mike Love

Can someone show us Brian's facebook post? I am not on that. In a recent interview, questioned about any future work with the BB (link below), Brian says "no, not so far" about any plan to work together again--not absolute rejection. They do not have to reunite for a major tour or even album, but what a nice incentive it would be for Dave if they planned a special show all together when he's better.

mc-interviewing-brian-wilson-beach-boys-founder-coming-to-eastons-state-theatre-still-finds-inspiration-20151016-column.html

Everyone (more or less) at the show last night was from the area, and the show had a real South Bay "high-school-dance" feel. It was a stone's throw from where the Boys grew up--right in their back yard as it were. Phil asked the crowd to say a prayer for Dave, and a shout of love and joy rose up. I hope the next time he starts the rhythm on Do it Again it is with all his original band mates around him.

As for the promotion of the show, not to be unkind to the nice fellow there , who was distraught and worried about Dave and is evidently a great friend of the band and the BB, but something was off. A "jersey boys" tribute band was also supposed to play, and the crowd shouted about that during the promoter's intro comments, and he said "they rescheduled," indicating another layer of chaos and confusion--some failure of communication that led to low ticket sales.

It's situations like this that really put all of the band bickering stuff in perspective, doesn't it? It sure would be nice to have another album or tour from the surviving Beach Boys although most of all I think just a sense of closure between all members would be a good ending. I'm glad Dave's feeling better. It's the continued health and happiness of the band that I believe should be most important these days.

These last few years, he went from "The Lost Beach Boy" to "the extremely underrated Beach Boy" and proved to be one of the best things about the 2012 reunion tour. It's great to know that he's the only member who still tours (well, guest appearances really) with Mike & Bruce AND with Brian / Al / Blondie...
David Marks is a wonderful guitar player, loved his solos on the 2012 reunion. Loved his vocals on Getcha Back... He seems to have a great sense of humor. I've never heard him say anything bad about anybody else in the band... Classy guy!

I sure hope he gets better real fast!

I could not have put it better, so thank you for your wonderful post. If you listen to the live recordings and see the live shows, it's Dave doing some marvelous stuff, playing his own parts from the records, playing Carl's parts from the records, and playing all the guitar parts from songs which he himself had not recorded from later in the Beach Boys career and therefore had to Master for the tour itself. I continue to find that extraordinary and a marvelous artistic creative accomplishment. And even when Dave is playing a classic lick note for note, he is elaborating on it or bending it a certain way with a certain bluesy and jazzy feel. There are so many songs such as little Honda where he's playing things not on the record but which sound so endemic to the Beach Boys spirit. I read John's book The Lost beach boy over and over, always smiling to myself in knowing that there is a marvelously understood extra chapter which is Dave's triumphant return to the Beach Boys which continues to this day and I'm sure will continue in the future. One of the true constants in beach boy history, along with Brian's genius and Mikes showmanship, and Al's innocent and sweet voice, has been that everybody loves and appreciates Dave for his humility, artistry, consistency, and loving loyalty to the entire group, all his bandmates whom he cherishes.

Posted by David on Facebook at approximately 3:30 PM Eastern today....

"Thank you for all the love and prayers, it was very overwhelming, I am very grateful for my friends, family and fans for your support, it really means a lot to me. My extended Beach Boys family especially came through for me and I was blown away by all the love!

"Some of you may be wondering what all the fuss is about? Well, I had a boner lasting more than 4 hours so I had to go the emergency room. Just kidding. In the dark hours of Friday morning, I had a close call with my heart but I was fortunate enough get to the ER within a few minutes of the onset of the crippling chest pain and I was given treatment and medication right away that prevented a serious heart attack. In spite of my low weight, not eating meat and having low blood pressure and normal cholesterol levels only six months ago, I had a genetic condition passed on from my father and Pappy Marks. Everything was fixed with an angioplasty and a few stents so I should be feeling even better than before very soon.

"I am especially thankful to the ER staff at St Joseph’s Emergency Room in Burbank for saving my life by stopping this idiot from ripping out his own IV out so he could go play a show! It’s very possible I wouldn’t be here if they hadn’t convinced me to stay and get treatment even though I was being an asshole and they probably wanted me out the door.
The good news is that I should have loads more energy as soon I recover from the initial trauma and I’m looking forward to getting back on the road asap! Thank you again for all the good thoughts! Love, David"

I guess I simply don't know the author nor his studio details, etc., so please pardon me for not understanding what recording session this is. If appropriate, please fill in the uninitiated.

Two of my three favorite songs on NPP are the Brian-Dave-Al songs--just love Dave's guitar work. Imagine what a new BB album would be with Bruce and Mike adding their "best" work lyrically, vocally, musically to team of B-D-A, who have proved that they can work together well and complement each other's talents.

Listened to the 2 Moon albums today--amazing.

Lots of inspiration and craft still to come from Dave as solo artist, guest artist, and, and I hope, as BB guitarist.

David was recording here a few weeks ago.  The tracks are dynamite...I think the guy has just begun to show the world what he can do.  So glad he's on the mend.

My name is Adam Marsland, Professor...pleased to meet you.

I did say some things about it on my Facebook page and on the studio (Karma Frog) page a few weeks back, but I guess it hasn't made it back to the message board, which is fine - I haven't made any real attempt to post anything about it here myself, given that I don't yet know what the final destination of the tracks - done in collaboration with a Spanish band - will be, and I don't want to speak ahead of Dave and Carrie's plans for same.  I don't know whether or not the tracks are intended for release.  I do certainly think the tracks Dave did are more than worthy of release, though.  Kick ass, blazing stuff!

Hey Adam. Is it anything like the Aqua Velvets? Spanish flavored surf music? That would be amazing!

Thank you Adam for that wonderful update, & I appreciate your discretion considering the unknown status of these tracks. You are evidently very professional and quite a gentleman. Many times, as a fan of David, I meant that he left the Beach Boys. But the journey of musical education and the personal journey into the depths of the human condition that he experienced have evidently made him at this point in his life ready for the finest stage of his artistic expression. Also the music with the marksman and with the moon is absolutely fascinating in and of itself, and in many cases, as Jon has argued in his book, ahead of its time. For this reason I am grateful for every bit of creativity and every track and every note that David plays with the Beach Boys and will play in any creative setting.

Adam is a modest guy for a rock star, which he is (in my eyes). He should be an honored guest on the Board but I doubt he wants the attention.

If I were a BB, or if I had any of their ears, I would make a clear and distinct effort to play a series of shows together to celebrate Dave. Mike can tell B and A to come to the Hong Kong show or devise a series of gigs at the Bowl--do something to play together before we lose a 3rd BB.......Such a reunion could bring happiness to countless millions.

Well, I say this all the time, and  know many share my hope.

I think it's OK to say a bit more about it.  He has been collaborating with a Spanish surf band called the A-Phonics.  They came here over a two day period and banged out a whopping 19 tracks.  It's all rerecordings of older material, largely Beach Boys and Marksmen stuff, but it smokes -- especially the Marksmen material (and the BBs stuff has a cooler, more laconic "true surfer" quality to it) -- and it's a return to/reclamation of the surf sound.  David was on tour with the BBs at the time, and he came in later and overdubbed his guitar and vocals, and I produced and engineered.  The ethos at my place, Karma Frog, is about keeping things sounding spontaneous and organic/authentic (though not being a total Luddite about it), so aside from editing some stuff and adding some basic processing like reverb, everything is as was played.  The A-Phonics tracked live in the room, just like the old days.  No autotune was used nor needed; Dave did a great job on the vocals.  As a guitar player, really stellar to work with - great chops but more importantly full of creative ideas and also really responsive if you have a suggestion.  One of my favorite guitarists I've ever had in here.

Dave did it all old school; big Fender Showman amp, Fender Jaguar and a Strat on a few songs.  The tone and everything were vintage '63.  You hear that guitar in the mix, and it's the old Beach Boys sound.  You hear what he contributed to the band; there's a drive and electricity to it.  The whole thing came together quickly; we mixed down all 17 of the final tracks in one day.  Obviously, there were a few things that didn't sit after a few weeks, so Dave came back in to tweak a couple of things today, we spent a few hours on it, and then bang, it's done.  Again, like the old days; don't overthink it, just get it done and let it rock.

I think it's going to come out as some form of release, but I don't know the exact plan.  But the remakes of "Sheriff of Noddingham" and "Kustom Kar Show" absolutely shred in my opinion.  They rock harder than anything the BBs have done in quite awhile.  I played "Kar Show" about 20 times on repeat after we did the mix and Dave went home.

The whole project was a total pleasure to work on, and of course a privilege as well.

Adam , thanks. I will pay to get this when it comes out. A dream come true, especially considering the technical and sonic state of those M-men tunes--they sound like old rusty 45s on the only album release I know about.

What a joy for you to be working on this project, in the vortex of BB history. My respects sir.

Thanks for the plug, Adam. I love what you were able to get out of the guys. It sounds exactly like what we hoped...1963!

I think Adam covered the backstory well enough, so I'll just reiterate how hard this collection rocks - think the Surfin' USA album if David, 15 year old Carl, and Dennis produced it. In my biased opinion, this may be some of the best musical evidence the early Beach Boys influenced the birth of the punk era. I will post some samples on David's Facebook page in the not too distant future.

David (with my help) also wrote a 12k word update to the Lost Beach Boy back in September which still needs to be viciously edited but is well on its way to becoming an interesting new last chapter to Jon's book as told by David himself.  In theory, the book update and the CD should both be released during the first quarter of 2016. Inshallah!

As for David's health: he was given the OK to resume business as usual as of last Friday...only two weeks from the day. It's amazing how quickly he recovered from the surgery (removal of a 99% blockage of the LAD artery - aka the widow-maker - and 3 stents inserted)...not that long ago he would've needed his chest cracked, but all he had was a small incision on his wrist.

More good news: the doctor who invented the stent is a Beach Boys fan! We met him at a private show David, Al & Dean and the All Stars played last year. In fact, that Still Touring video hijacked some of my footage (David driving the hot rod ) from that show.

To those not on Facebook who didn't get our updates, thank you so much for all the love during a scary moment! But, thank God, David beat the odds one more time and happens to have some of his best work in decades in the can to boot. There's a lot to be grateful for!

Wow, thanks Carrie. This sounds  like a dream come true, the fulfillment of the artistic vision that Dave and Carl had when they played as kids. The current BB (variously manifested) did not (have not as yet) been able to create that sound. I have always lamented that Beaches in Mind was a missed opportunity to let Dave rock out, but the production fails somehow. Perhaps Joe Thomas is not the producer that Adam is. Radio and NPP are "mellow as hell," and that's where BW wants to be, despite claims of wanting to rock.  I sure as heck hope he does not play to rock without Dave.

I have always , ad nauseam, wanted the BB together on an album, but it may very well be that Dave needs to work his own way, Brian needs to do the same, and that the artistic result of NPP (at its best featuring Dave and Al), and Dave's new work actually best manifests their skill and creativity. Perhaps the dream of the 5 together creatively is not the ideal.

I am longing for this album and promise to play it and learn from it and celebrate it and use it in my class on the BB.
