Title: I'm giving a young BB fan a copy of Pet Sounds today.
Post by: MadeForTheseTimes on July 01, 2006, 02:34:47 PM
My ex-girlfriend and best friend's boyfriend has a sister who's 13.

Apparently she's a big Beach Boys fan, and I asked her yesterday if she had heard Pet Sounds. She hadn't even heard of it.

So I burned a copy of it and I'm giving it to her today...Should I feel good?

Yes. You should. And if she loves it and goes on to love the 1967-1972 period, then you should be knighted.

I'm not sure if Pet Sounds is going to fully reveal itself to a 13 year old. It'll probably just be sweet sounds to the ear, though it's better than most what 13 year old kids listen to now.

I think being a fan of the earlier music first is the natural progression, makes sense, you know? I'm tired of seeing all these people who hear Pet Sounds and then "discover" the Beach Boys. laaame.

I think it does but if you are experiencing this historically it's probably not going to be strictly that way.  I experienced the BB's in real time so the progression was easy for me.  I got into jazz, in retro  though, as I was mainly interested in the Hard Bop era after the fact.  Interestingly, and not totally coincidentally, that era generally parallels (rockwise) Sun Records- Elvis through the mid-Beatles in time).

I'm not.  When I picked up on John Coltrane, I started with "A Love Supreme" which could well be called Coltrane's 'Pet Sounds'  (though it would be more accurate to call 'Pet Sounds' Brian Wilson's 'A Love Supreme').  Though I had hindsight and I cherry-picked to start listeniing to Coltrane,  I also read and learned the history of both Coltrane and hard bop jazz so I knew what the whole deal was.  It worked well and has been very satisfying for me.  I would encourage new fans to start listening to whatever BB music it is that has gotten them interested.  You will get to the rest if and when you want to.  No need to let the "cool" police dictate that.  I would encourage new fans to learn the history of the BB's and of the progression of rock music generally by reading and at sites like this.  I promise that it will make your experience much more complete and rewarding.

I first heard Pet Sounds when I was 14. It didn't make sense at first but after a long while it did. Good luck.

That's quite a ridiculous statement. Think about all the Beatles fans since the 70s who have started with Sgt. Pepper. I know I was one of them.

Sgt. Pepper
is not the Beatles' best work in my opinion. It's just their most celebrated. Half of it is pretty crappy compared to the great things they did before and after that album. Compare "Sexy Sadie" to 'When I'm 64" there's just no comparison. Likewise with the Beach Boys, they have many interesting albums. I personally prefer many of them over Pet Sounds, although I do understand the emotional importance that it carries. I think Friends would make a larger impression on a person. It's unlike most music, and will take most off-guard. Pet Sounds is like handing a person a massive stack of papers to look through, when the paper they need is at the very bottom. Whereas Friends is just one sheet of finely sliced paper with its message written clearly.

Got news for you....I didn't like the earliest music for the longest time. For the longest time, I just thought of the Beach Boys as some lame barbershop group that was always played on the oldies station. Incidentally, I got into them after buying Brian's first solo album for 99 cents at a bargain bin (after reading Brian's "autobiography"). I loved it so much that I bought my first BB cd the next day...which for the record happened to be Smiley Smile. I've been a fan ever since.

Amen.

Pet Sounds was my first "album" at age 15, but I had heard and enjoyed Kokomo and all the popular 60s singles beforehand (the first time I heard Surfin' USA was a laser-light show when I was around ten). A little before that, I was, for some reason, obsessed with songs about California. Everything from It Never Rains In Southern California by Albert Hammond to California Uber Alles by the Dead Kennedys and everything in between. But the one I loved most of all was California Girls.

Then I heard Pet Sounds. at first, it seemed pretty spacey, but after listening to the words, especially the ones Mike did lead on (his 60s voice, to me, is more teen-identifiable, for some reason), I loved the concept behind all the songs, the mood, the feel. I still don't think I "get it" (see my Amazon review (http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A3MOCZTYRIBLRK/ref=cm_pdp_reviews_see_all/102-9577919-5119304)), but from there I purchased the next CD chronologically - the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey twofer. Oh, it was wonderful. Won-won-wonderful, even. It was at that point I truly became a fan, rather than a fun-sun-cars-girls listener.

I completely agree with you that Sgt Pepper is overrated completely. I much prefer most of their other albums. But it's a valid point that I made--you don't hear Beatles fans complaining that fans start with Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt Pepper--I don't see why Beach Boys fans have to be sticklers about this.

I'm not really complaining, it just gets my nerves when people didn't like the earlier music, declare that it's sophmoric barbershop crap (not a direct reference to Peach Boys's comment there), then hear Pet Sounds and realize the "genius" of Brian Wilson.

Did these Sgt. Pepper fans think poorly of Please Please Me beforehand?

Many do, yes. I know I didn't appreciate the early stuff until I got what they were "really about"--after listening to the middle albums.

I still hate the Beatles' early work.  :-\

As for the BB, I started liking the earlier stuff after hearing live versions off of numerous boots and off of live albums, esp. In Concert. However, I still cannot listen to the first album, or the Little Deuce Coupe album.
