I really like that album. I'm not through hearing everything, but I'm positively surprised....

I think "Cool head" has some Hit-potential for the summer

Holy crap!  I wonder how long that'll stay up before the lawyers descend with a cease-and-desist....

But i like the album.  I'd love to see it finished up and given an internet-only release.

It's better than Brian's album.

Damn.  What little I've heard sounds good in a BB sort of way. Mike's on to something there imo but I'd like to hear Al and Brian and Bruce joined up to some of that.

I heard from several sourches that the album was surprisingly good, but I really don't agree with that. It's just as bad as I thought it would be.

I listened to most of a track.  Couldn't really understand the lyrics...probably my hearing loss....

there was acoustic guitar and a beacboys sounding harmony...which sounded amazingly close to the real thing, although it was somewhat far back in the mix....

is that harmony Adrian Baker and those guys?

I don't think so.  I know that Mike's son Christian is in there - he's the one who sounds eerily like Carl - but i don't think any of the touring BBs, past or present, participated.

I have, of course, been wrong before...

I'm listening to it as I write this...It's not what you'd think a Mike Love album would sound like. It's not rock and roll, it's almost acoustic-sounding, like an unplugged recording. On most of the lead vocals, Mike uses his soft, whispery voice, very mellow. He definitely does not use his rocking surf & turf voice. The lyrics are typical Mike Love, mostly positive and sentimental, with those rhyming phrases that occasionally make you wince. The harmonies are very impressive, in some ways more easier to listen to than Brian's because they're not in your face, they're not shouting at you. The songs are kind of mediocre. Theres one or two good ones and a couple of so-so ones. I don't think "Brian's Back" is as good as the previous version(s). I think a diehard Mike Love/BB fan could appreciate this album, but the critcs will have a field day with it.

Perfect, entirely accurate review.
It's fine, the best solo Mike Love work yet.
But it's still not anything you'd really listen to more than once or twice.
I enjoyed it more than Brian's last things, though. Seek it out.

Adrian appears on "Daybreak" and perhaps others.

Thanks for the correction, Eric.

Unleash The Love, Everyone's in Love with You, Brian's Back - good

Pisces Brothers, Glow Crescent Glow, Daybreak - so, so

Cool Head, Anything For You, 10.000 Years, Love Foundation, Only One World - mediocre but generally well produced and harmless

Too Cruel, I Don’t Wanna Know - I don't have those

There You are. Thank God the rapping wasn't done by the Lovester. Is there any Dennis left in 10.000 Years? This one had some potential if produced like a POB track, but the production here is annoying at best.

Just an observation that's a bit OT - for some reason Brian's CDs are very forward sounding. It's MUCH less pronounced on the DVD-A and DVD video releases (or vinyl). If you want to hear the harmonies sound most like live the CDs aren't the optimum source (except WIRWFC).

Christmas.
Nearly as good as GIOMH, for me.

Mike threw a curveball here. Nothing offensive in the least about this record, for my money, Mike's finest work. Now only if someone would release First Love.

Can't he sell it through a beach boys website? Maybe he should sell it through the Smiley Smile board?  ;)

Is Spiritual Regeneration on this (as I've read in some places), and if so, does it have that annoying narrator coming in in-between Spirtual Regeneration and Happy Birthday ("Actually, what you're hearing right now is John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr in India in 1968 at a birthday party for Mike Love!")? That guy kills the song for me.

I've never heard it with the Wolfman Jack narration.

It's there, sans narration.  You can rest easy.

I suspect the ONLY way to sell this album will prove to be via the internet.  But then i don't see why more artists don't go this route to begin with - cut out the middleman!
