Title: SOngs that the Beach Boys covered
Post by: GETTINHUNGRY on June 10, 2006, 09:40:26 AM
I was just thinking the other day about songs that the Beach Boys covered.  I was wondering which ones everyone thought was the best and why?  I do not know all the songs that they covered, but these are the ones I could think of off the top of my head (in no particular order):

Do you wanna dance?, summertime blues, then I kissed her, I'm so young, Louie, Louie, Why do fools fall in love?, Walk on by, Sloop John B, Barbara Ann, ( most of the songs off  the party! album) I can hear music, Come go with me, Rock and Roll Music, Hot fun in the Summer time, Under the Boardwalk, The Little old lady from Pasedena, Long Tall Texan, Papa oo mow mow, Monster Mash, The Letter, California Dreamin, I was made to love her.

I would have to make it a tie between Why do Fools fall in love, and Do you wanna dance.  They are great  songs, which the Beach Boys really made their own.

There's On Broadway, I Should Have Known Better, Mountain of Love, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Old Man River, Devoted to You, You Are My Sunshine, Gee, Misirlou, Let's Go Trippin', Cottonfields, Bluebirds Over the Mountain, Never Learn Not To Love, Back in the USSR, School Days, Okie from Muscogee, Moon Dawg, Honky Tonk, tons of Christmas songs, et cetera..

They had their fair share of covers.

Palisades park was a cover.

My favorite has to be Sloop John B.  Nearly perfect song.

Never Learn Not To Love

Since one of the Beach Boys actually got writing credits for that and because they were the first artists to offically record it, that's technically not a cover.

'Why Do Fools Fall In Love', without a doubt, it's such an amazing cover.

It  defined brian wilson as the greatest singer of all time to me,

On an interview on XM radio last week, Brian played and sang a couple seconds of a few Beatles songs from Rubber Soul.  Pretty cool.

Ooh!  Which ones?

Favorite covers would have to be "Cotton Fields" (Al's version), "Just Once in My Life" and "Hushabye".  In all three cases they were able to better the original, IMO.  Dennis doing "Sea Cruise" is great too!

Apparently Brian recorded a piano-only version of "You Never Give Me Your Money" during the Sunflower sessions.

I guess that I forgot a lot of their cover songs.  I have to agree that Hushabye is another great onethat I let off my little attempt at a good list.

What's "official"? Charles Manson recorded many versions of lots of his songs, "Cease To Exist" included, way before 20/20 came out. Taking a self-publishing (though well known in LA at the time) artist's song, claiming that Dennis wrote it, changing the title and releasing it on a major label two years before Manson's version was? Pheh.

I shouldn't have said last week, I should have said last year.  If I remember correctly, "Michelle", and "Girl" and maybe another 1 or 2.  He was really animated in that interview, he played a cool version of "Da Doo Ron Ron" on piano.

There were many good covers but my all time favorite, aside from SLB, would have to be I Can Hear Music.  It was the song that brought me back as a fan.  It was just beautiful and just jumped right out of the radio and slapped me around......just pure joy and harmony....just the antidote for that morbid self-absorbed drug music of the late sixties.

Carl Wilson at his best.

The first half second of it is already one of my favorite moments. Those heavenly BB-vocals....

OK--this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days. :lol

But it's the only non-toxic thread on the subject I could find, so back it comes! ;D

At a crucial point in the superb film Never Look Away (original title: Werk ohne Autor), the hero and his wife move from East Germany to the West (this was post-war, pre-wall). The first song they hear when they arrive is (of all things) the original of "Papa Oom Mow Mow" by The Rivingtons:

So many great covers to choose from they've done a ton. If I exclude Sloop John B I probably have to go with I can hear music followed closely by then I kissed her. While they've had some clunker cover versions too they've had some magnificent ones as well

My vote is for Cottonfields.
Love the "lickety spit" lyrics.

Unpopular opinion I know, but i really like Under the Boardwalk. Yeah its dated, and compressed, but Carl and the backing vocals are really soothing. And that smooth guitar hanging in the mix is nice.  Its one of the very few songs off SIP that sound like there was some effort put into it.
It might also be that it was one of the first BB songs I heard. And yeah, the drum machine is a bit much, but it doesn’t bother me.

Two of my favorites are Devoted To You & There's No Other Like My Baby.

I also recently heard an old track of Brian singing You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' on YouTube, which was new to me, but I don't think it ended up being used. It was pretty raw, which I didn't mind, kind of sounded like the demo version of Mona to me, which I adore. But for those expecting something that sounded like the Beach Boys sing the Righteous Brothers, I guess it would have been surprising. To me it seemed like it could have gone on the Love You album. Anybody know any more about this? Just curious. You guys know everything.

I also (for some reason yet to be determined) love their version of Da Doo Ron Ron. BTW, I had no idea that so many artists covered Da Doo Ron Ron. You could really kill some time on YouTube, listening to all of them, crazy! Even the young Bee Gees had one, The Carpenters, not to mention Alyssa Milano... Who knew? Until a few days ago, I only had heard The Crystals, Beach Boys, & Shaun Cassidy. (I'm so unenlightened...)

This is my perspective. The definition of a really good cover is when the general public think of the cover version as the original and not the original.

#1 Barbara Ann - a stellar number one as hardly no one think of the Regents version
#2 I can hear music (the BB version beat Spector on the charts etc)
#3 Sloop John B.

Honourable mention for Freddie Mercury's early version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzA4OyalTuI (with Brian May and Roger Taylor, so one bass player away from being a Queen song)

They did a really good version of Kokomo IMO. Can "Be Still" be considered to be a cover?

Other favourites are:
Just Once in My Life, I Was Made to Love Her, Walk on by, My Only Sunshine - Also Palisades Park when I'm really in that mood!

I think around that 1980 era there seem to have been quite a few covers of Spector productions. Some are a few years earlier.

Possibly a bit of a precursor to the "Rock and Roll" album concept which Brian has much talked about in recent years.

I'd have loved to hear a studio version of Sister Golden Hair, the way they played it when Gerry filled in for Mike. Possibly with a Bruce or Al lead. Brian was on the record to have dug that song.

More completed Bacharach covers would've also been cool. It would've been cool to hear Brian in his Adult/Child crooner era do This Guy's In Love With You or Close To You.

And, as funny as this sounds, a cover of the MJ/Wings song "Girlfriend" would have been very cool... That falsetto lead could've been handled really well by Carl (with Bruce maybe helping out on those real high notes)
