Brian, Mike, Dave, Al, & Bruce!!!
Posted on June 9, 2006 at 12:31:34 PM by Namby

They said it would never happen; but all five surviving Beach Boys --
co-founders Brian Wilson, Mike Love, David Marks and Al Jardine, along
with longtime member Bruce Johnston -- will appear together on Tuesday
(June 13th), on the rooftop of Capitol Records' Los Angeles
headquarters. Co-founders Dennis and Carl Wilson died in 1983 and
1998, respectively.

The event, which commemorates the sales of over two million copies of
the group's hits compilation Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The
Beach Boys, will mark the first time Wilson, Love, Jardine and
Johnston have appeared in public together in nearly a decade. In
addition to the group being awarded their platinum albums, Capitol
Records will be unveiling the artwork for a commemorative Beach Boys
anniversary CD and vinyl titles to be released later this year.

In a LAUNCH exclusive, Al Jardine said that the group has been amazed
by the album's unstoppable success: "We've been delighted and
surprised in the weekly sales figures and they're beyond
comprehension -- and they're showing no sign of slowing down!"

Jardine said that being with the guys on their old stomping grounds
just might be the thing needed to get them all to finally commit to
reforming: "We're going back to our roots. It is a reunion. It's a
beautiful thing."

When asked if the awards-ceremony would be a dry-run for a full scale
musical reunion Jardine said, "I sure hope so. The only reason we're
here is because we're sharing the music and love... And then the
lawyers came. An impressive offer (for a reunion) has been made. We
just need to sit down and agree to do it -- or not to. But that's what
we've already been doing (laughs)."

Founding Beach Boy David Marks told LAUNCH that the group's records
will never fall out of fashion: ["The Beach Boys actually symbolize a
happier time. People are drawn to it -- and continually drawn back to
it, because mainly people wanna feel good, and the music is just feel-
good music, what can I say? And it reminds everyone of happier times
too." SOUNDCUE (:16 OC:. . . happier times too)

Beach Boys historian Jon Stebbins told LAUNCH that, "It's nice to know
that David Marks is finally getting acknowledged for the hit records
he contributed to. Let's hope this type of goodwill is a signal that
Dennis Wilson's great unreleased music will finally see the light of
day."

Stebbins long awaited biography on Marks, titled The Lost Beach Boy is
due out later this year. In 2000, Stebbins published the definitive
biography on Dennis Wilson, titled The Real Beach Boy.

We have to see this.  I sure hope it will be filmed and broadcast or somehow distributed to the public.

I will be in California.....but not until the 14th DAMN IT.  I would find some way to get there if I could.

A lot of money offered.  I guess that is one thing they can finally all agree on.

I wonder who put together the offer.

Wow, this happened really quickly - next Tuesday already - or they kept it really quiet.

This doesn't sound like an important reason to reunite (celebrating the success of a greatest hits repackage), but I'll take it. I'd love to see the guys reunite.

I hope everyone can make it on such short notice; that they don't have to work (a concert), or have a recording session scheduled to overdub some dit-dits...

Yeah, it's NOT a very good reason to reunite... which means (in my opinion) that they must just be looking for an excuse to reunite.

You don't think the fact that the Beach Boys are still able to move 2 million records 45 years on is a pretty big deal?

That's not the issue. Do I think moving 2 million records 45 years on is a pretty big deal. Yes, I do.

Do I think it's an important reason for The Beach Boys to "reunite"? No, I don't.

I would've hoped other reasons would've produced the reunion - recording, touring, the desire to heal some old wounds, etc. I never considered celebrating a greatest hits package one of them. Other than Mike, I didn't think the guys were too fond of the Endless Spirit Of Golden Summer Greatest Hits And Sounds albums. Of course, they were probably fond of the royalties.

But don't ignore my last sentence in the above quote. I'd love to see a reunion, any type of reunion.

I think at this point, they need an excuse to spend time with each other.  Even if they wanted to spend time with each other, that's hard thing to initiate after so many years of difficulty.

Yes! That's what I was hinting at.  2 million records does not mean that they have to reunite.  There doesn't have to be an award ceremony.  They don't all have to be there... they certainly don't show up together for other ceremonies and things.... but they're at the point where they're looking for an excuse to get together.  Al clearly is at the point where he just wants to drop everything and forget the problems, Bruce I see as pretty much an innocent bystander at this point, David's finally getting a little recognition, but Brian and Mike are the two egos, I hope the two of them are ready to play nice.  Or maybe they already do and we just don't know them very well.

I'm flying to the Capitol Records event on Tuesday from Las Vegas and Mike Love will fly in from Reno. We will both ride together from Burbank airport to the awards ceremony. Also I'm really hoping that Dave Marks will be there.
FYI: Though I'm looking forward to being with Brian, Mike, Al and Dave, I'm positive that this will be the very last time any surviving Beach Boys will be in the same place at the same time.

'The last time ANY surviving Beach Boys would be at the same place at the same time.'

So does this mean Bruce and Mike won't be keeping each other company any more?

or does he mean ALL of the surviving Beach Boys together at the same time? Which would mean the Mike and Bruce show continues.

I was about to point out the same thing. Based on Bruce's comment, we will apparently never see Mike and Bruce appear in public again, let alone play music together. I highly doubt he means this. There are a few possible explanations for Bruce's statement, some more likely than others:

1. He simply meant to say "all" instead of "any". I don't think this is it, though.

2. He is joined at the hip with Mike to the point that he considers he and Mike to be one Beach Boy.

3. He is simply using hyperbole to convey the trouble it takes to get all five of these people together  in one place at the same time, what with such "busy" schedules.

4. The only reason they are all getting together is because this is the easiest way to serve each other with a wide variety of lawsuits, thus they'll all walk away even more disgruntled and will never show up together again.

5. Despite the unclear probability of any Al-Brian live gigs or other joint projects as have been rumored/reported, perhaps Mike and Bruce are becoming a bit nervous that Al and Brian might do somethint together without Mike/Bruce, thus there is an attempt to try to convince fans that any Al-Brian activities have no chance of happening, thus the comment suggesting these guys will never again even be in the same place at the same time. I mean, assuming Bruce is counting he and Mike as a single BB, how would Bruce have any idea when or how any combination of Brian, Al, and David might show up somewhere together?

I think (1) is unlikely. (4) is pretty much a joke (I hope). So I think the reasoning behind Bruce's comment is perhaps mostly (3) with a bit of (2) mixed in and, perhaps, a tiny bit of (5) as well if you're into a bit of conspiracy theory.

Okay, I've confused myself now. I'm of course totally guessing/joking with all of the above. I have no clue about any of this. I thought I read just a day or two ago that David Marks hadn't been invited to this thing. (In which case Capitol inviting him is a good move).

I'm pretty sure he meant ALL of them together, but I don't know what would make him say it. I was under the impression there had been a bit of dialogue between various parties working towards just that - this comment seems to indicate they didn't get very far. Bummer, maybe.

Are they going to be performing on June 13th?  I thought it was just an award ceremony...I didn't think that they'd be performing together, too.  If they do, I sure hope it's filmed!  I would take the day off and go if it were a public event, but I think it's a private "invite-only" thing.

There is no plan to perform, unless something acapella is just done for fun. I think Bruce's comments are in response to Al's news stories claiming the group will reunite for a show. I hope these men find some serenity with each other before they kick the bucket.

It would be nice to see them cooperate to utilize their archives to the best commercial potential. There is a market, albeit limited for past live and unreleased studio material.

Andy...that's a great question.

The answer is yes...but the period will probably surprise most people. All those guys were together at Brian's house during vocal sessions for "Long Promised Road" in '71. Other than that I think one was usually missing from the puzzle. The other occasion I can think of as a possibility was John Stamos' wedding in '99...I know Brian, Mike, Bruce and Dave were there...not sure about Al. Carrie Marks can answer this question definitively.  Bottom line...its only been a few times if its more than one.

Were Carl and Denny at that 1971 session?  If so, it would mark possibly the only time all of the long-time BBs except Ricky and Blondie were ever together at one time...

It might have been. Dave was obviously around all the guys a lot before Bruce was there, and Bruce was around them all a lot after Dave was gone...Dave and Bruce were together a lot after Carl and Dennis were gone...but the question is how many times were David and Bruce together while Dennis and Carl were still here...a few...but mostly at gigs when Brian wasn't there. Dave sat in with the guys at the Whisky in '71...not the first Whisky gigs...but the second booking that year...and perhaps Brian attended...not sure. Other than that it was probably the Surf's Up session at Brian's and maybe one or two social occasions...like dinner at Brian's house or something. We need Carrie for this and she's flying to L.A. with David today. I'll be with them tomorrow. Up on the roof.

Well the whole period is documented in the book...but the short version of the story is...months earlier Mike had invited David to re-join the band...and attending this session was part of that process. Of course we know Dave didn't re-join the band in '71, the story of why and how it all went down is in the book.

And yeah I'll definitely take some photos tomorrow. It should be fun.

I recall reading some sordid story on the internet, and I have no idea if this part is true, that Mike Love was sitting at Stamos' table while Al was stuck somewhere in the back of the room. I have no idea if it's true or not, and I would imagine even it's true in the slightest, it has probably been exaggerated.  What wouldn't suprise me the slightest is that even if all those guys were at that wedding, they may not have all ever actually stood together or all talked to every other member.

Looking forward to seeing some pics from the Capitol event. Try to take note of how they all interact (which will probably be the only interesting thing to watch apart from what I would imagine would be obligatory speeches about Al's mom loaning them money, Brian liking the Four Freshman, etc.). I'm interested to see how Al and Mike interact, and how close Brian is kept to any of them (perhaps the fact that Brian warmed up to David and Al to some degree at the Hawthorne event will show Brian's handlers that he can handle being in the same room with these guys). I recall seeing pics of the grammy luncheon that Mike, Bruce, Al and some of Dennis' and Carl's family attended, and the group pic had Mike at one end and Al at the other end!

Can somebody get an audio recording or a camcorder or something into this Capitol event? On the one hand, this could be the beginning of some ill-fated "Stars and Stripes Vol. 2" reunion. But on the other hand, this could well be the last time all of these guys are together. Even if they do some sort of reunion thing, I would think it would be questionable as to whether David would be involved, or whether he would want to be involved. Hopefully this won't be like the last time John Lennon and Paul McCartney were photographed together and all we have is a polaroid snap shot of it.

It's so strange that because of the touring group, the BB's often get lumped in with other bands where there's like one guy still even living. Yet, tomorrow there will be FIVE actual official BB's appearing together (with two other short-term members still living out there). It gives me a bit of hope that if they were interested enough, they could actually do a half-way decent reunion thing of some sort.

How often have any of the BB's appeared together in public post-1998, not counting Mike and Bruce (and David into 1999) in the touring band? I can think of the following:

1. Stamos wedding (All five supposedly, and not really a "public" appearance)
2. Grammy luncheon (Mike, Al, Bruce)
3. Grammy ceremony (Mike, Brian, Al, Bruce, not seated together, but all in the same room)
4. Hawthorne Landmark (Brian, Al, David)

Apart from some pics of David seperately with Al or with Brian or with Mike and Bruce taken in the last few years, and of course Mike and Bruce at shows, I'm trying to think of any times other than those listed above that any two BB's have been even photographed together since 1998. I vaguely recall hearing that there was a pic of Brian and Mike from a meeting they had that was published in ESQ, but I could be remembering that incorrectly.

Just one photo of them all with their arms around each other, or shaking hands or whatnot, and smiling, is all I need. No reunion tour or anything like that.. just five men happy with each other as human beings.

After reading Ian's "Today in history"-thread on the blueboard today, I think it's funny that June 13th is the day they all meet for the first time since almost ten years, since June 14th was the day they performed on Farm Aid, though this was not the last time Brian performed with them.
And also from the blueboard, here is Carnie's take on the reinion-thing:

From icebergradio.com:

Brian Wilson's daughter Carnie Wilson hopes that tomorrow's (June 13th) Beach Boys reunion in Los Angeles will lead the group members to reconcile and make some music together. The surviving band members, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, David Marks, Al Jardine, and Bruce Johnston, will all appear on top of the famous Capitol Records building to collect their platinum awards for sales of over 2 million copies of their greatest hits compilation, Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys. Co-founders Dennis and Carl Wilson died in 1983 and 1998, respectively.

Carnie told us that she would love nothing more than to see all the surviving Beach Boys team up for a reunion tour: "I just don't like to get involved. I try to stay out of it because it's not my business. However; it's upsetting. The truth of the matter is I wish that all of the Beach Boys could just tour together. That's the ultimate wish of mine."

Over the years, Carnie and her sister Wendy have teamed up with Jardine, his sons Matthew and Adam, Cass Elliott's daughter Owen Elliott, and assorted Beach Boys sidemen from the group's '70s and '80s lineups to perform as Al Jardine's Beach Boys Family And Friends. Eventually a legal injunction forced them to stop using the "Beach Boys" name.

Wilson, Love, Jardine, and Johnston have not shared a stage together in nearly ten years. Wilson stopped performing with the band in 1996, and in 1998 Jardine was forced out of the group. Shortly thereafter, co-founder David Marks rejoined the band for several years.

Love and Johnston now hold the exclusive license to tour under the group's name. Wilson has performed as a solo artist since 1999, and Jardine and Marks have been teaming up for a growing number of concerts each year.

Jardine has told us that in addition to a possible reunion concert later this year in Britain to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the group's Pet Sounds album, "an impressive offer" has been put forth to the entire group to reunite.

The Beach Boys -- featuring Mike Love and Bruce Johnston -- will perform next on June 23rd in Kelseyville, California at the Konocti Harbor Resort & Spa. They'll be on tour through the end of September.

Brian Wilson will perform on July 1st in Las Vegas at The Club in the Cannery Casinos. After that, his next show will be on July 23rd at Australia's "Splendor In The Grass Festival" at Belongil Fields at Byron Bay.

Al Jardine and David Marks will join Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean for the "Cruisin' With The Legends Of Surf Music" cruise, set for October 2nd through 6th.

IMO, if Capitol put this event together, (probably with considerable difficulty) and as they are a commercial organisation with an eye for the main chance, there is no way they would let this event pass without commemorating it photographically or otherwise.  That's the point of these award thingies, isn't it?

Yeah, we better check out Entertainment Tonight (and those shows of similar ilk) for the real Hollywood scoop!

Beach Boys Reunite For First Time In 10 Years
Love, Wilson, Jardine Put Differences Aside To Accept Award

POSTED: 12:27 pm EDT June 13, 2006
UPDATED: 12:43 pm EDT June 13, 2006

LOS ANGELES -- The members of the classic Beach Boys lineup are putting aside all the lawsuits, bad blood and nastiness for a celebration of their music together.

Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston will make their first appearance together in 10 years on the roof of the Capitol Records building in Los Angeles Tuesday.

They will be presented with awards marking the double-platinum sales of the compilation "Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of the Beach Boys."

The group has recorded such classics as "California Girls," "I Get Around," "Surfin' Safari, " "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Don't Worry Baby" and "Little Deuce Coupe."

The event Tuesday will also mark the announcement of a commemorative Beach Boys anniversary CD and vinyl titles to be released this year.

Brian Wilson is the last surviving member of the three Wilson brothers.

Dennis Wilson, who played drums and sang, died in 1983 at age 39 of drowning. Singer-guitarist Carl Wilson was 51 when he died in 1998 of lung cancer.

The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

It's nice to see these guys together again.  However, if I were to be honest I seriously hope this does not mean they're going to record new music together again.  Without Carl Wilson there it would be pointless.

Very true.

Too late for another "Brian is Back!" campaign?

Article on the actual ceremony.  Note that it's Brian who seems more a bit more upbeat about a reunion, Love less so.   Also, Brian calls the Beach Boys his favorite act to produce:

Founding Beach Boys Reunite
By Steve Gorman

Three of the original Beach Boys appeared together in public for the first time in a decade on Tuesday to toast their musical legacy and hinted at the possibility of a reunion performance.

Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine, along with Bruce Johnston, who joined the touring lineup in 1965, gathered on top of the Capitol Records office tower for the presentation of double-platinum plaques marking U.S. sales of more than 2 million copies of the band's 2003 collection, "Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of the Beach Boys."

Also on hand to uncork champagne with the band was David Marks, who briefly filled in for Jardine in the early 1960s.

The three original band members have not performed together in years. But, asked about the possibility of sharing the stage again, Wilson replied, "There's a chance of that."

Added his cousin, Love, with whom Wilson was often at odds in later years: "We've got tough management."

The focus of the event was to promote reissues of the band's catalog and celebrate the success of "Sounds of Summer," a 30-track set featuring hits like "California Girls," "I Get Around" and "Surfin' U.S.A."

The album, released in 12 countries, spent its first two years on the Billboard Top 200 chart and has since ranked among the top 10 biggest-selling catalog albums of all time.

"I want to thank everybody involved that helped us get that album ... going and going," said Wilson. "And I thank the Beach Boys themselves for being great, great artists to produce. I'd rather produce those guys over any other artists in the whole world."

Johnston, who became part of the group when Wilson quit touring to focus on studio work, paid tribute to Wilson's brothers and fellow founding band members, Dennis, who drowned in 1983, and Carl, who died of cancer in 1998.

"I wish Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson could be here with us," Johnston said, to which Love added, pointing up at the sky: "They probably are, because this is pretty close."

Organizers said the last time the original Beach Boys appeared together in public was around the time that "Stars and Stripes, Vol. 1," a collection of Beach Boy covers performed by various country music artists, was released in 1996.

Capitol Records, a unit of EMI Music Group, also announced plans for a 40th-anniversary release June 27 of a deluxe CD single of "Good Vibrations," featuring five versions of the band's seminal 1966 hit and its original U.S. B-side.

In late August, Capitol also plans a 40-year commemorative reissue of the band's landmark "Pet Sounds" album in a CD/DVD package that includes mono, stereo and digital Surround Sound mixes of the music, plus previously unreleased promotional and documentary footage.

From the Beach Boys Britain site...

Up On The Roof!!!
Posted on June 14, 2006 at 02:14:11 AM by Bruce Johnston

I just returned to Las Vegas (we have a private concert here at the Wynn in three hours....97 degrees outside & clear!) from the Capitol Records press conference and I must say that it was great to see the band today. We all caught up with one another in one of the large offices before the 'event' and then we went up on the roof and received the awards. There were lots of TV and still cameras covering the presentation and then questions from the press. The 'reunion' issue came up and the band dialogue was pleasant, polite but also noncommittal.
Al and I had a quiet discussion about a Beach Boys reunion tour and I pointed out to him that I thought the best approach would be to first book a 'controlled' venue and hope that a DVD, CD and TV special came out of a BB concert and in turn that might create some sort of mass interest in a possible US tour. I also reminded him that the Beach Boys music is available in concert live year after year unlike the Eagles being in musical moth balls and you would have to look at some sort of practical financial BB concert fee for the band. You don't want to burden a concert promoter with huge concert guarantees but loads of empty seats because the venue is too large.
I'm not saying that just because we spoke a reunion tour will take place-I still feel that this was the last time we would all be in one place at the same time together. Sadly there are always many issues in the way.
One more thing: We all made sure that Dave Marks stood with us in all the photos though some of the 'younger' Capitol Records employees did not know he was!

Good article, but some of it seems very dated.  When Mike speaks of Landy etc and Brian not believing in himself.

While there still may be truth in that, Brian has come a long way in the past 10 years (at least it appears that way).

In any case, it's great if they start just getting together - I think then things will click.

They just better have those cheerleaders on stage during Be True To Your School. I want to get my money's worth and see some ass. Also, maybe Clapton could do a really bitchin' guitar solo for I Get Around.

You know, Mike only mentions people who where on Brian's GIOMH-album.  Does that have something to say ? I don't know....
