What really Strikes me is how much better happier and healthier Brian and the others looked at the Pet Sounds sessions as opposed to Smile.

I've always liked pictures like this, or the one with Brian holding the photo of the other four.. it accurately shows his place in the band as some distant figure, apart from all the others..

And that picture from the early 60s is pretty interesting, Dennis singing and Brian on drums, Mike just standing around doing nothing..

i've actually been told that the picture of brian holding the picture of the guys is actually a mirror...how impressive is that? that should have been used as a promo for smile or pet sounds...

I don't think it is -- Carl, Dennis, Al, and Bruce's hair all match up with the side they usually parted it around that time.

Unless the main image is flipped, too..

I think that session is the best she ever looked. In the Priess book there is an even better shot.

I love that illo! So much that I've had it hanging up in my office ever since the Preiss book came out. Not only is it a fun tribute to the BBs, but it's also a marvelous tribute to the style of the great Disney comic book artist, Carl Barks!

While clearing out my home studio I found some old snap-shots I had taken at a Beach Boys show in 1982 at the Louisville Palace Theater, Louisville, KY.  Dennis was there and what was facinating was the fact that they had 2 drummers.  Given all the shows I've seen from the early 70s through the mid-90s I can't recall how well the band played that night.  Sorry for the quality but they were taken by an newbie photographer with inexpensive equipment almost 25 years ago.

This was the last show that I personally saw Dennis perform.  I do recall his voice was totally shot when he attempted to croak out "You Are So Beautiful".  A very sad memory.

The sad thing is that this was a box of rejects...I put the best shots in an album that had other BB shows as well as Stones, etc....anyway that album was destroyed when my parents basement flooded 20 years ago.  So imagine my surprise to find a few bits left in an old box filled with papers.  Thanks for indulging me my memories.

Anybody see the resemblence here?  Kind of an obscure 60's soundtrack LP, but the picture was also taken in '67.  Makes you wonder what kind of movies Brian was into, other than 'Seconds'.

Brian did the Beatle hairstyle better than they did themselves. He must've spent a long time in front of a mirror with the Rubber Soul album sleeve with him.

Also, the picture of Brian at a SMiLE session with his beard -- I think that he shaved it purposely like that as a result of seeing Mike's beard.

Why did Brian release 'Caroline, No' as a solo single?

So he could release Sloop John B too. Everybody calls this a flop. I disagree. Brian wasn't much more famous then the others before Pet Sounds so 32 for a debut solo single is great.

Actually, I made this pic myself, by using various stills from the Beautiful Dreamer documentary. It's nothing more than a quick copy-and-paste job, which is why you can see some horizontal lines on the picture...  :(

I think it is a sheet music cover, but I could be wrong.

It may have been taken for People magazine, but it is in the Silver Anniversary Book and on the cover of the bootleg "Brian Loves You"

Was going to upload another picture but it seems that this thread has reached it's attachment allowance...?

He (or The Beach Boys) wanted Sloop. He also wanted Caroline. 2 45s out at around the same time was not something a label would normally go for. So in order to have them both out he put one under his own name. Simple marketing move.

That pic you posted as your favorite reminds me of the pic on the back of the Holland cover where Brian looks a little paranoid.

Brian gained a lot of weight a couple of times....I think.

It would be interesting to see a series of pictures of Brian, year by year, from 64 to 2004.

I saw him in 82 or so while Carl was on Hiatus from the band.  He was quite large and slovenly in appearance.  Just a few years later, after the Landy Tx, he looked quite good.

The one of Brian and Dennis is around 69 I think at Western or Gold Star. Rocker's pic was taken in Holland probably the same day as the back cover. I like the photo too but to me it is the session that first shows signs of his real decline. Of course compared to 74-75 or 80-2 he looks terrific.

The 2nd picture of Brian & Dennis is from Mojo magazine, the one with the 5 page article on Denny. It was taken like that, or at least that's how it looks in the mag! :)

Are there any pictures of Brian Wilson and his beard from 1967 that we know yet? I've seen one of him at a SMiLE session in a blue shirt, then a few at the beach with the rest of the band, a car shot with Marilyn, and a living room picture. Any others?

From looking at it now, I think Back to the Beach is backwards. Check the partings in Denny's and Carl's hair in the other pictures, that's a sure indicator!

By the 1970s almost everyone you care to think of from the 1960s (not just BBs) started looking awful.  They even seemed to go physically uglier!

Brian had his cool moments even after 1974. He should have stayed permanently beardless in 1980 and beyond as he looked pretty good at the Knebworth concert.
I also kinda like Dennis' look wearing his hair a bit shorter during his final years.

That said, it probably doesn't get much worse than on the back cover of the 1985 record in terms of coolness. Everytime I see pictures of Mike wearing that white hat I can virtually hear him say: "Cars and girls were okay. But there was a war going on."

That's Brian in '74? Other than him being over weight, he looks healthy (a lot more healthier than he looked like in 1976 ie Mike Douglas show, SNL, etc.)

On the picture frame it says 1980.

It's amazing how many physical changes Brian has went through. Almost like 4 different Brians.

Right it is from The California Music session. Brian did have many "looks". If you take 62-3, 64-5, 66-73, 74-82, 83-87, 88-92, 93-now he looks very different in each of these phases. I think I like Brian's image pre 74 the best. Particularly 64 and 70.

Here's a picture I took of Brian on my mobile, backstage at the Liverpool Summer Pops 2005, the day after Glastonbury. He was on fine form, chatty and laughing.  The guy behind him was his bodyguard, and the guy in the pink (?) shirt next to him was an some kind of assistant / furo do burro. All did was keep whining at people to hurry up and get their picture...

He does look healthy, but in photos from that era (including this photo) he always looks like a deer in the headlights. He just looks disturbed to me, and it's sad.

Was he on the health food trip as well?  It seems like I read that it was something he kind of expected of others but was not willing to participate in himself.  Either way, he does look very fit in this pic but there is still something rather disturbing in those eyes.

Yeah, someone invited him.. the Maharishi. There were alot of people there besides the Beatles. A bunch of random non-famous people went, too. What a treat that must've been.

Where can I find picture sleeves images for The Beach Boys singles? Outside of Wikipedia. They only have tiny 200 X 200 pixel shots. Is there someone who has posted them somehwere? I have "googled" for all on my list and still can only find a few. :wall 

I kinda remember a website that had just about all of 'em, but I can't recall the address or anything.

You can search for the original 45 singles over on eBay. I've seen several 45s with their pic sleeves over there. Not all of 'em, mind you, but many of the classic ones, '63-66.

If the 45 was released with a PS, you'll find it here (60ies releases only). If no PS is available, you may assume the 45 was released with a company sleeve only. You'll see when you receive the PS-book "This Whole World". This would mean you only have to search for 70/80/90ies releases now.

That picture of Brian with the Everly Bros. is from a concert at the Hollywood Bowl in 1966.  I think it's in the Priore book.

When were these photos taken?

That first one was probably taken around 8:21 PM.  Just a guess though.   ;)

Not an expert, but since they're Smile Era, and feature Van Dyke, they're late 1966.  I think the one with the boys at the piano is at the Wally Heider sessions in Summer 1966, but could also be the Hawaii rehearsals just before that.

Were they hanging out with Sir Paul? What was the occasion?

Linda wasn't his girlfriend yet. She was a photographer. Did a lot of Doors, Stones, Beatles etc. This is before they were going out. She shot them around the time of Friends twice. Once at Brian's house and once when they went to New York in Janurary 1968 (including Brian and Dennis ) to all see Maharishi.

Jasper- that Hollywood Bowl rehearsal photo is from July 3 1965 not 1964-yes Brian played with the group at the 65 Hollywood Bowl show.  The show was extensively documented in LA Magazine-with photos of all acts by Julian Wasser. Brian played that night in place of Bruce. He also played at a show in San Diego the day before.  The LA magazine photos show that the group wore their striped shirts and chinos.  There are about 50 shots of the BBs signing autographs and rehearsing at the Michael Ochs archive site.  As far as I can tell the BBs did not play the Hollywood Bowl in 1964, though they did play at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank.

Yes.  That is former BB sax man Richie Cannata partly obscured behind Brian.  Based on Brian's "look" and the fact that he was indeed present for the shows, this was probably taken during rehearsals for the Las Vegas shows in '95

He was fat as hell then.

Yeah 1995 was the only year since 1982 where you could call him obeese.

What year was the birthday picture? Dennis and Carl it looks like 76 or 77, but I didn't think Brian ever shaved at that time. Maybe 78 or 79 before Brian gained weight again?

It is 1980 Brian looks good in that shot, but I have seen another from that day and you can tell how heavy he is.

Those 1963 pics are clearly from the Hawaii tour in June 63- which Brian did not go on. If you check out Bellagio- Gigs you''ll see that I uncovered the complete tour- they were there a few weeks and played a number of army bases and Hawaii sites- beside the one show listed by Keith Badman.  The home movie footage (shown while Surfin is playing) in American Band are from that tour (the only film of Al and Dave playing together from the 60s that I know of)

Both of them are in that "Beach"-footage, also from An American Band.

Are there any pictures of Brian and Macca during his trip in the mid 60s? (I believe it was 66, but I could be wrong)...Ive seen some pictures that Linda took (I think theres one of Dennis going around, and one of Macca next to a pool), but I havent seen any of these two fellas together.

Jasper- The picture of Brian and Phil Spector that you have is erroneously listed by Keith Badman as having been taken in January 1965- in fact it was taken in Sept 1965 when the group was making the Party album.  The teenset pictorial on that album have a number of pics of Brian in that oufit- taken specifically at one Party Session- and  for those that really know Brian pics-in early 65 his hair was shorter and not usually combed that way

Thanks for the comments.  My goal with these is to try to convey the complexity of songs that many people take for granted as "simple rock & roll".  You try telling people that Brian directed 15 musicians at a time and it doesn't seem to phase them.  I think by listing all the musicians present and the sort of directions he gives them may provide a revelation of sorts with casual youtube browsers.  I'll try to make more of them, but I tell ya it's hard to fill 6 minutes with photographs.  :P

Wow! Even though Brian and Mike are close to the same age, modern day Brian seems to show lots of youthful exuberance while modern day Mike looks, at least in those photos, like a senile old man who's desperately trying to stay out of the nursing home.

Sorry ::) Works for me, so I just tell you what I see:
On the first two pics, Brian is standing arm in arm with an attractive young lady, taken in Australia. I thought that's his on tour girlfriend, but now I learned that she's a singer and appeared at the Sydney Festival.
The other pics are new promo shots. Brian sits on a white chair wearing blue jeans & a nice shirt and laughs.

I can't get them to work, either. And, in internet explorer  they come up as red "X"s. Try uploading them to Photobucket.

I think it's because it looks like Dave's shirt is white, not flowered. Also, Dave's cap and shoes match his suit. I'm not attacking Mike. Just pointing out some differences. Dave is a little more conservative, which could be good or bad for a rock and roll show.

Not how they are dressed, but just their performance mannerisms in general. Mike has all those corny jokes, and his dancing....  Bruce just...acts like Bruce. I never said they shouldn't be corny, since that's the way they naturally act. They been like that since the '60s, there's no need for them to change it now. Yeah, sometimes Brian's mannerisms embarrass me too, but he can get away with it because...because...I don't know why. Because he's Brian?? :lol

And yes, I'm totally biased. Not exactly a David Leaf worshipping Brianista, but more like Wilson brothers=good guys, Mike=bad guy from SMiLE onward, Al=sided with Mike out of practicality and defected to the Wilsons just a little too late, Bruce=neutral party who kisses Mike's ass because being in "The Beach Boys" is a very lucrative job, Blondie and Ricky=got out of the group just in time to avoid all the infighting, David=only one on good terms with everybody.

Dennis still looks really good there. It's like he aged 10 years by the time P.O.B. came out. Granted there are a few 1977 shots of him without the beard where he looks only maybe  five years older, but he did age quickly from here.

I'm sorry, I had to reply to this... two of my major drawing subjects have been the Beach Boys and professional wrestlers, so I could not help myself. It's so gloriously WTF! It is ironic that even though Dennis was the one who's body actually looked a little bit like this, he's inexplicably hiding behind roidy Carl in a show of uncharacteristic shyness.

And as I've posted... is it OK to post pictures of us with Brian? I have been told that this is quite a 'rare' facial expression on Brian, if you were looking at it with a collectable bubblegum card mentality. Also, pardon my cleavage in this picture, I was slightly bothered that it was so on display. Very cute of Darian and Brian, me doing horse face.

Well, meeting him was wonderful actually, that particular night was really special. (See the thread I started 'Beach Boys fan Art From an English Mind' for more details.) There was all this business with Brian being shown one of my paintings you see. He did seem on pretty good form to me. It was my favourite Brian in concert experience by far. A really small venue in the cheap end of Bournemouth, near Lidl, not too loud, and close enough for eye contact with the band. Plus it was my first exposure to the LOS music, which felt like a real happening. Brian was very animated and expressive. And apparently when Darian told Brian that I was deaf in my right ear, he was asking questions about how I'd lost my hearing and things. He did seem reasonably relaxed, especially since the camera wasn't working and it took ages. The words 'Sorry Brian' were uttered by my Mum and myself.

I was informed by the man who took the photo-of Brian and the BBs clapping and sort of dancing in gold suits-that this was part of the Time Magazine shoot from 1965-but that may be a faulty memory. If it was for a TV show-then I have never come across the footage

Looks like they are backstage. The other ones from 1965 with them in the white and Brian with the bangs also makes me wonder. Could he have combed his hair that way in Chicago maybe. He seemed to go back and forth hair wise as the Summer Days and Party photos show.

It could be Chicago (Mar 26 and 27 1965)- but as I mention on Bellagio-the Shindig app (with Please Let Me Wonder) was probably March 29 not Apr 21- So we have an indication of how the group looked that week to compare it to

The photo of Al, Bruce & Mike in Times Square, "DJ'ing" at the turntables may have been during the time of Wipe Out. The labels on the records look like Tin Pan Apple, the Fat Boys' label  And Al and Bruce are wearing chains. Iz dat wack, or what?

Yeah I have that poster and when I saw it I knew that the picture was from the late 70s and didn't correlate with the original date but whatever.

He obviously was having a "good" time.

This seems to be the place to mention-that some pics that can be seen on Redfern and at Getty images of the BBs (also double page spread in Badman pages 226-27 mislabeled as Mexico) with Mike in Handle bar moustache, Dennis with Beard and unidentified man-posing with a van and on a pier-were taken on June 16 1968 (the day after a Lagoon concert) in Salt Lake City-at a spot at Salt Lake where there was an abandoned pier and amusement park by Cyril Maitland (who may be the man in the photo) for Fabulous 208 magazine-They are in the Aug 31 1968 issue.

Brian looks weird in that 1965 pic. Like his has no chin or something.

The painting is odd, but he does get the hair right circa 1968.

Does anyone have the picture of Brian backstage round about the time of Endess Summer (I think it might even be the Anaheim concert) where he's wearing a greeny, Hawaiian shirt with a cigarette in his hand? I saw it originally in the NME at the time when Brian was playing the Glastonbury Festival in 2005 but haven't seen it since?

Has anyone seen photos from the 6-27-1971 Fillmore concert showing the Grateful Dead and the Beach Boys on stage together? I've scoured google images as well as some big collections of photos I've downloaded from this board, but so far, no luck.

I don't have it on my cpu but there is one taken that day in Brian's book. Though the picture was taken6-17-83 Gold  misdated it as 1987. He is with Bush snr. THere is alos another on the back of the 1983 edition of the Priess book.

Dennis, judging from what you can actually see in this picture, looks so old here...

That's why I'm interested in other pictures. I heard that Dennis was quite obviously drunk. But I have never seen much of this meeting. The short footage in AAB isn't showing much as well.

I thought so even judging from that very little snippet we got to see on An American Band. By the way he pushed forward in order to shake Reagan's hand you really can tell he must've had a few drinks before. Always thought Dennis looked cool as late as 1981 - haven't seen any 1982 footage, I think, so any '83-era pictures really never fail to dismay.

I think by 1977 he already looked kind of off. There are a few good pictures from that year like the record party without the beard, but something is wrong in his eyes already. By 1979 he looked really ill. Having seen film footage of that meeting (not much longer then the AAB stuff) he looks very old and sick

I think there's some good, post-77 Dennis moments. for all that went on in Australia, he certainly SEEMS pretty together in the footage on YouTube. I think he's very good during Carl's slurring musings before Surfer Girl ("He got it for free") and he does a terrific You Are So Beautiful.

I also think he was good at Knebworth. He was great on the drums, his byplay with Mike during Surfer Girl seemed more playful than mean-spirited, and the way he and Mike Meros turned and looked at each other during Surfer Girl was excellent.

But yes, 1981 and beyond was very sad.
