Title: Brian Wilson 'Les Chan' (on the 'Cocaine Sessions' CD)
Post by: humanoidboogie on May 28, 2006, 03:47:12 PM
So, what's the story behind this intriguing 12-minute recording (done at Brian's home, I presume) found on the 'Cocaine Sessions' CD? Are those fans visiting Brian? There are lots of interesting stuff being discussed...

Brian: Let me think... Songs on the new album... 'Sweetie' and 'Stevie'. And there's 'Be My Baby' and 'Calender Girl', but [Mike] put it on his album. 'City Blues', a song written by me, Dennis and a friend of his (Garvey-something?)

Annoying fan #1: What's your favorite album, Brian? Of the things you've recorded?
Brian: 'Holland', and... 'Carl & The Passions - "So Tough"'. I like those two albums the best.
Annoying fan #2: I've always wondered who sang the lead on 'This Whole World'?
Brian: Carl.
Annoying fan #1: Do you like the 'M.I.U.' album at all?
Brian: No. I was in a bad frame of mind during that time. I wasn't in a good space... I didn't like the whole bag at all.

By the way, what version of 'Til I Die' (on the 'Hawthorne Hot Shots' bootleg EP) are they talking about?

Dennis' friend is named Garby Leon.

Les Chan is the fan who taped it (without Brian's knowledge).  It was taped in Brian's hotel room during the Beach Boys' appearance at the Circle Star Theatre in San Carlos, CA, December '81.

Yes, that's the one. It has the eight 'Cocaine Sessions' songs, plus 9 bonus tracks.

Ah, thanks for the info, C-Man.

By the way, "annoying fan" wasn't meant as something negative (in case Les Chan himself would read this thread).  ;D

I think I've heard of (but have never heard) this recording. Is there any music on it, or just talking with Brian?

It's just talk, with Brian singing a few lines from 'Still I Dream Of It' and a couple of others. If anyone's interested, maybe I could upload it? There shouldn't be any copyright issues with this kind of recording, right?

Brian also sings a little bit of "Stevie" and "Sweetie".  Biran sounds really good, in terms of his mood...upbeat and positive.  He discusses their new hit "Come Go With Me", Carl's then-current sabbatical from the band, calls Dennis' room to see if he's up for signing autographs (he's sick and apparently tells Brian he might not make the gig that night...Bri suggests he take a warm shower), and tells the fans his two fave albums are "Carl and the Passions" and "Holland"!  'Course, he also hits the fans up for a toot...and asks them not to tell anyone.

I would like to hear this.
BTW imagine an album with songs like "Stevie" "City blues" (don't know what "Sweetie" is)... wouldn't that be cool...?

No, it was "Sweetie" first, back in '81.  The Boys recorded it but never released it and maybe didn't even finish it.  Then it got re-written as "Love Ya" for "Sweet Insanity".  Then Brian and Paley produced a verson of "Sweetie" for April March sometime in the mid-'90s.  Is that the version you're referring to?  Or is it a Brian piano-demo?  If it's the latter, then that's probably the 1986 solo demo Brian did.  Confusing?  Sorry.

Wasn't "Love ya" (and therefor "Sweetie") a rewrite of "Heart & soul" ?

yeah, back in '81 mike & brian were interviewed before they took the stage at the 7/5long beach tv show. mike talked about how "he & brian had just wrote a "hot" new song called sweetie but they wouldn't do it tonight because they had not rehearsed it enough". too bad they didn't rehearse their stage show either.. :)

Brian also produced a version of "Sweetie" with Carnie and Wendy for the "Wilsons" album in '97. Now there was a project that should have been more than it was -- I think at one point Brian wanted to produce a full album for them. He recorded a backing track for a rework of "Let Him Run Wild" for them too, I think.

He asks his guests if they snort it.  So he was either trying to get some from them, or trying to find someone to do it with.  I suppose if he wanted some, he just had to go to Dennis' room...

Speaking of April March - have those sessions ever seen the light of day?  I'd sure be interested in hearing them!

Somewhere toward the end.  Maybe the version you've heard is edited, but it's on the original.

He still kinda sounds like his young self there.

How weird to here a clip of Carolyn Williams...

Billy you are right no slurring or anything. I think the slurring begain about 1986 and got worse in 1991

This is indeed rather strong evidence that the slurring started later on. However, I think this tape is running way too fast. So while Brian does sound very energetic and is not slurring, I think his voice probably didn't sound quite that high-pitched in 1981. He sounds like his 18 year old voice there, and other examples I've heard of his voice circa 1981 have his voice a bit deeper than that.

I was thinking the same thing. Everybody sounds kinda whiny.

Brian sounds really good. He doesn't sound crazy. He sounds like he did in the 60's. But I guess yall are probably right with the pitch thing. Even if his voice was lower, he seemed to have a good spirit.

Great interview!  There's one part I can't seem to make out however... It occurs at 6:27 into the interview when Brian is discussing the songs that will appear on the (ultimately) unreleased *New Beach Boys Album*:

FAN: "Loop de Loop", is that coming out soon?

BRIAN: No that's not coming out.

FAN: unintelligable

BRIAN: No we decided not to get into that.  That's too, too... It's not good enough.  We wanted something that's good out there.  We want good product.

FAN: unintelligable

BRIAN: Yeah, unintelligable sounds real good!  They play...

FAN: unintelligable

Can anyone fill in the missing blanks here?
