Oh god, I hope that's not true...

I will always love him for painting this:

Gosh. A sad, sad loss.

And once again, proving how incredible it is that Brian has outlived so many peers and is not only still alive, but creating great work.

More of the past slips away... I was only born in the '80's yet i feel so connected to this period of music (and film). I feel the same as I did when Davy Jones died i.e. miserable. RIP David. Great painting!!

Very sad.  Probably the prime player of the Smile era (besides Brian and Van Dyke of course) and always a forward thinker in the music and entertainment business.

I had the great pleasure to talk with him a bit about "the painting" and Laurel Way '66 when I taped hours of backstage footage for the Smile DVD concert.

A true gentleman. His lively and informed conversation with Paul Williams in a 1971 issue of Crawdaddy (reprinted in Outlaw Blues) was a revelation at the time and a key part of the puzzle.

RIP, David.

I don't usually post in these threads as I just don't know these people but have to say, Anderle seemed particularly cool in the BD doc and that Paul Williams piece. RIP indeed.

Truly sad and amazing how Brian keeps outliving everyone

Sweetdudejim also made a comment like this, and it's the first thing that crossed my mind. Brian, after all of the crap he (and others) has done to harm himself, is somehow still alive. At this point, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if he ended up being the last remaining BB.

Anderle always struck me in interviews as being a pretty honest and likeable guy. He did everything he could to help Brian try to achieve his goals during that hugely creative period of '66-
'67. Damn shame.

Not much more to say or add, other than the Smile airport photos seem to get more poignant and bittersweet every time I see that group of twenty-something friends and family captured at a moment in their lives at that age when anything seems possible if you believe it's possible. And who could have written the future which saw those people in that photo responsible for some of the greatest and most successful music of the past 50 years, and in that one photo alone the five smiling young men standing in the back row being involved in creating music that between them have sold upwards of 200 million records and counting and have made that many people happy and brought joy through their music.
That part about believing...

Condolences to all of David's family and friends.

Through the kindness of Alan Boyd, I was hired to direct a documentary shoot at the Hotel Bel-Air in the fall of 2007.  The occasion was a formal cocktail party celebrating Brian Wilson's upcoming Kennedy Center Award in January.  The BW world celebrity and friends count was very high that night but I got a chance to meet and speak with Mr. Anderle prior to our interview and found him charming and friendly, very down to earth.  He just seemed like a cool guy, unimpressed with all the glitz.

Condolences to David's wife, son Jonathan, and Brian Wilson. Another member of the Vosse Posse is gone. When I think of David I think of the Brian painting, the pictures of friends meeting Brian at L.A. Airport, and the article in Crawdaddy by Paul Williams. He always emphasized that Brian was obsessed about humor during the Smile/Smiley/Wild Honey era. RIP.

I'm presuming that since our mod has confirmed this, that it is indeed real. I just find it strange that David is not mentioned at all in Billboard, Variety, or the Hollywood Reporter.

I guess I'm still holding out hope that David is still out there somewhere, and having a good chuckle at all this.

The timeline on his Facebook page is wiped clean, which is a little unusual, even after a person's death. I guess if you don't think it's for real, you can contact one of the hundreds of "Friends" on his Facebook page.

Yes, condolences....

I ordered "Outlaw Blues" from Scholastic Books (My Weekly Reader) back in the day, and that is where I received my initiation to the genius/brilliance of Brian and the BBs.  Although a big fan of the early stuff, they had lost this youngster pretty much, but reading those interviews began me on a different track.  To my mind the conversations between Anderle and Paul Williams were the birth of the Smile myth which directly or indirectly led to their resurgence in the early 70s, BWPS, hell this board even.  And lest we forget, they also raved about Wild Honey in the second part, which is every bit as cool!

Brian Wilson has lost one of his earliest champions.

Absolutely one of the "heroes" in the history of the Beach Boys, and I'd recommend everyone read through David's bio and credits to understand just how much he was involved in and accomplished beyond the association with Brian and the Beach Boys. It's another case of a man who was directly involved in a lot of productions and behind the scenes work in the music and film business that literally tens of millions of people know and have enjoyed, without realizing who some of the folks involved in making it happen were.

One example: I heard a radio interview show last week where the topic was 80's new-wave music and a book related to that era. A big topic was the John Hughes movies like Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink, and how popular and influential those soundtracks were and still are as the films have taken on a retro resurgence of sorts with people who were not even born when they were released.

And it turns out David Anderle was responsible for those soundtracks in large part, as an exec producer and music supervisor for those projects. Another case of knowing and growing up with those films, and never connecting David Anderle to them until this week.

He will be missed, again my deepest condolences to his family and friends.
