Brian Wilson is the eponymous debut solo album by Brian Wilson released in July 1988 on Sire Records. Working with an array of collaborators including his therapist Eugene Landy, Wilson accordingly themed the album around love and spirituality exemplified by its lead single "Love and Mercy". Although the album's sessions were contentious, where some participants demanded a progressive artistic statement versus conventional pop songs, nearly a quarter of the LP is devoted to "Rio Grande", a piece which was intended to rekindle Wilson's experimental drive from the mid 1960s and early 1970s.
It was voted one of the best albums of 1988 by NME, and as part of its acclaim, garnered the nickname "Pet Sounds '88" among some critics.Brian Wilson has since been reissued on several different formats with bonus tracks, and cited by some as a standout in Wilson's solo oeuvre.

The album is on Spotify!

Walkin' the Line
Melt Away

Little Children
One for the Boys

Meet Me in My Dreams Tonight
Rio Grande

Walkin' The Line. I can't stand Brian's vocals on this one. Probably the only BW song (officially released) that is embarrassing to listen to.

Let It Shine.

I struggled for many years with Walkin' The Line; especially the opening arrangement of each verse (Iiiiii walk the liiine.., and that harmonica or whatever lick) but over the years I've grown to quite enjoy it.

Night Time is dislike time.

Could those who decry One For The Boys elaborate? Is it hearing a wall of Brians where the other Beach Boys ought to be that grates, or do you just not like the song? It's one of my favourites on the record and I find it a teasing glimpse into what a half-decent '80s Beach Boys album might have been like.

It's one of the songs from BW'88 that sends shivers down my spine. It's all about personal choice of course, but I have to defend One For The Boys as I see it as a highlight from this album.

Probably Night Time followed by little children.

I say Night Time because I have such unpleasant memories of Brian singing it on that Dick Clark special with Brian and Frankie Valli.  Dr.   Landy's Frankenstein.  Shudder.

Whenever I hear it, I can't help but think of it as an impoverished relative of "Our Prayer."

One For The Boys.

To answer the question raised by "Unreleased Backgrounds", back in 88, while I loved the fact that I could hold Brian Wilson's first solo LP in my hand, which seemed like a miracle, One For The Boys was a reminder that the Beach Boys, together, harmonising under Brian's direction, was always going to have been better. It was a reminder of what coulda been, if you like. I love walls of Broan-type tracks but this seemed under-realised, with empty pauses that should have been packed with voices. Seemed more like backing vocals, lacking instruments and a lead.

Just going to pick from the ones getting a bunch of mentions.  All of these will be gone soon, and we will get to the heart of the record.  Have said it before, but my original feelings when I heard this for the first time were why, why didn't he do this with the Beach Boys.  It could have been so much better.  As John says, "One for the Boys" was a missed opportunity.  It's no "Passin' By" - that's for sure.  My vote:
"One for The Boys"

I've been voting Let it shine, but I now opt for strategic voting for the first time in these polls, since it looks like my views on BW '88 are seriously at odds with the general public, and all my favorite tracks are getting voted off first...

So my vote goes to Meet me in my dreams tonight.

I know a lot of folks love it, but it has always been a grade-A stinker to me. Embarrassing, pseudo-macho, strained vocal...yuck. Repetitive melody, boring, over-acted 5-hour energy fluff. Hate it. Only Let it shine is worse.

Night Time ROCKS. Walkin' the Line is serious stomping cool. What is wrong with you people?

I'd love to play along but I really don't want to have to listen to that album.  ;D

"Little Children" is my least favorite on the album.  It's definitely pure Brian and it's fun but a little too silly and repetitive that it pales in comparison to the rest.

More than a hint indeed -- it is the chorus to "Mountain of Love." Just with different lyrics (and in one case -- "It used to be" -- the same lyrics).

Always surprised no one sued over that.

I like both tunes. I do. But MMIMDT is just a bit too ersatz Spector, and Brian sounds strained and terrible. On the other hand, TSM is a lovely, relatively underproduced piece of song craft -- with lame lyrics.

Darn.

I'll go with Meet Me. And I know which track is next.

"Love And Mercy" must go. I never use it on any of my BW comps but I always include the other 3 songs.

Must be the fuzz bass that makes it almost kind of rock a tiny bit.

Although L&M would get my vote, to provide further protection for the best song and recording of Brian's entire solo career (which of course is the sublime "Melt Away"), I will vote for:

Baby Let Your Hair Grow Long

FINAL THREE!!! Vote for your FAVORITE TRACK!!!

Tally on September 10th

Love and Mercy
Melt Away
Rio Grande

Round#1 - Night Time August 20
Round#2 - Walkin' the Line August 22
Round#3 - Little Children August 24
Round#4 - One for the Boys August 26
Round#5 - Let it Shine August 30
Round#6 - There's So Many
Round#7 - Meet Me in My Dreams Tonight September 4
Round#8 - Baby Let Your Hair Grow Long September 8

Rio Grande is great n all... but I do feel that it is just a wee bit overrated.

Love And Mercy is great, but the slick production on this version just kills it for me (in a bad way).

My favorite has to be Melt Away. I remember hearing this song for the first time and thinking "Hey Brian is still in there somewhere!"

Melt Away, which will win, has never been my cup of tea. Always skip it.

Rio Grande has it's moments like Night Bloomin' Jasmine, but yeah, a bit overrated.

So, Love and Mercy is my pick, though Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight & Baby, Let Your Hair Grow Long are by a wide margin, my two favorite tracks.

Edit: Changed from Melt Away to Rio Grande.  I just listened to RG again and as feelsflow reminded me,  I re-experienced a little of the initial thrill, delight and awe I felt in 1988 hearing it for the first time.

It could be Melt Away on another day.

Would be unusual if "Rio Grande" made it to finals, otherwise, no, I'm voting for "Love & Mercy".

But this IS the finals…

These are the three I figured would be the final.  My favorites have changed many times over the years.  In fact when I played the record after voting to off "There's So Many" last week, I hoped that would make the final.  "There's So Many" is a great performance of a great song.  If that had made it, that would be my vote.
I'm not so sure this performance of "Love and Mercy" belongs here, though the song does.  "Melt Away" is such a heart-tugger, but I'm going to go with the most ambitious track:
"Rio Grande" is what everybody was hoping for in 1988, a SMiLE like epic.
