Title: Beach Boys Solo Survivor #4 Winner: Mike Love's "Be My Baby"
Post by: pixletwin on August 18, 2014, 12:20:06 PM
This album is an easy target, but I actually like it better than a lot of other solo Beach Boys records. Heck I even like it better than a few Beach Boys records!!!  :lol

Looking Back with Love is Mike Love's only solo album. It was released in 1981 under Boardwalk Records. The track "Be My Baby" was produced by Brian Wilson, who also sings background vocals on the cut.
Strangely, some copies came with stickers promoting the album as "the first solo album by a Beach Boys member", despite the release of Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue four years earlier, Carl Wilson's self-titled album earlier in 1981, and Bruce Johnston recording solo albums before he even joined the band, in addition to his 1977 album Going Public.
Also of note is the fact that the song "On and On and On" was a cover of an ABBA song which was directly influenced by a 1968 Beach Boys song called "Do It Again".

Here is the whole album: http://youtu.be/UYNUF-Sw0RQ

This isn't quite as good as First Love, but it's a much better album than most people give it credit for.  There are no great tracks here, but most of them are good fun.  Two exceptionally bad tracks stand out, however: the hilariously bad title track, and "Rockin' the Man in the Boat," which is just plain dull.

I vote for "Rockin' the Man in the Boat."  At least "Lookin' Back with Love" is funny.

My favorite song on the album went first...
It was your favorite, really? You're some trick pony. I feared that "Runnin' around the World" would go 1st. So next in my schedule:

"Paradise Found". [After that, "On & on & on", bad cover of bad song by bad quartet.]
I bought this album on release, in 1981.  Back then it did not sounded dated, though some of it does now - over thirty years later.  I still play my vinyl copy occasionally (the Celebration records too - I have them).  "On and On and On" is my second favorite track.  I loved ABBA back in the day, and still do - they will never become dated.  Think you'll find they have lots of fans here on the board, including pixletwin.  The ladies make top ten vocalist lists too.  My favorite is Agnetha.  Best albums, The Album and Arrival.

Well, if you'll feel better, I actually like their "Thank you for the music". That guy can play some keyboard.

I have just listened to this album for the first time in years so I could get in on this voting. As it turns out, the only song I kind of liked at all was the cover of "Calender Girl" which has already bit the dust. Looking at what's left, I'll have to go with "Paradise Lost" which is a huge shart upon the Beach Boys legacy and kind of hints at how Mike really feels about Pet Sounds.

I'll go with "Paradise Found" Just to move on.  This record has some guilty pleasures, but my favorites are fading fast.  What is everybody hearing that I'm not.  Glad Roger stood up for "Calendar Girl" - Mike did this okay.  Honestly though, I listen to the version on my Adult/Child boot, that's the version I really like.

"Be My Baby" because it is a very weak production of a song that defined intense production and inspired Brian Wilson to form the Ramones.

On and On and On should have gone on at least one more  round.  (6) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

"Be My Baby" is wretched and the other 2 are instantly forgettable. I have to surrender this time.

My most tolerated song was "Calender Girl" not that it matters any more.

Be My Baby only got this far because Brian co-produced it.  >:D

Teach Me Tonight is much better and has a very good Mike lead.

But One Good Reason is a well written song and Mike also does a good job on it so it gets my vote.
