Title: Help me move to LA
Post by: Gabo on July 03, 2014, 12:51:25 PM
I just graduated from college a month ago and I want to move to LA. My budget is probably $900 a month at the most and will take any apartment that is dog-friendly. I would obviously need the basic amenities: a kitchen and a bathroom. A studio would work.

I know I can't get my hopes up too high with my budget, but finding a suitable place in a decent neighborhood in LA, or anywhere in Los Angeles County with opportunities for work, is certainly possible. I currently live in Iowa and am willing to work like a dog to live in the area. My family will anyway provide a little cushioning to get me started, so there's little to fear.

I need to limit it down to one neighborhood. I would like to move in a couple months. Thanks!

The living costs here in California are expensive and the minimum wage is low. Admittedly, it's not a great situation for someone looking to make it here on their own.
Try out apartments.com (http://apartments.com) or craigslist (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/hhh/), see if you can find anything.

I know what I'm doing Bubbly Waves. I have only been in parts of LA and am simply asking good areas I should look for an apartment in. I will find a job and pay the bills, and come from a relatively well-off family (didn't want to say it, but there) so there's nothing really stopping me from moving. I also have a four year degree.

Part of my family is actually from SoCal so I am familiar with California and have spent a lot of time there. My sister is also moving to San Diego. I love California and need to get out of Iowa. There's no question in mind to where I should move, and not much stopping me.

Why do you want to move to Los Angeles? Been there once, will never go back.

Apparently, this is a website (http://bestlaneighborhoods.com/). Also, this (http://losangeles.about.com/od/movinghere/a/choosingneighborhoods.htm) gives you a pretty good rundown of the neighborhoods in Los Angeles.

Thanks!

The Valley seems like a good place. Maybe North Hollywood?

Thanks for a great answer.

You can't even disclose on an anonymous forum why you prefer LA over other US cities? What do you think will happen to you if you tell us?

I thought you were going to ask for a ride or something, Gabo. And being in Minneapolis, I suppose theoretically I could give you one. But you didn't ask, so I won't offer. Also, I don't want to go to LA. (In the two years I spent in Iowa--first two years of college at UNI, where I studied jazz--I actually enjoyed Iowa ... and found women from Ankeny shockingly attractive. The Midwest farmer's daughter, and so on...) But good luck to you in the move.

I recommend starting a thread seeking help to move to one of them.

(Minneapolis and Chicago, can't go wrong. Milwaukee, I've only ever driven through/around it.)

I'll be in Minneapolis this month to visit some friends. I may still need the ride. ;)

I was considering Mini-applez, but its not diverse enough for my dating tastes. I'm not really attracted to the blue-eyed blonde-haired variety you get in the Upper Midwest.  I also visited Austin TX recently but its no less expensive than my dream location in terms of rent, LA and there are far less opportunities there. I know once I move to LA I can be satisfied living in the area for my whole life. I loooooove LA.

I can help connect you with cool people around your age who dig The Beach Boys if you choose the Twin Cities area. It's a great place to live. Probably the most hippie city in the Midwest. Chicago is a little too business oriented, not artsy enough for me and I don't know Milwaukee well. Madison is a great city, but it's dominated by the college campus and doesn't have a lot of identity outside of it.

That's really only true for the Loop/Gold Coast/Viagra Triangle. Chicago is a great artsy town if that's what you're into, especially in the right neighborhoods. It's also now the top market for vinyl record sales (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-vinyl-records-0630-biz--20140630,0,650610.story - although the store they point out in this article is a few blocks from me and not a particularly good store).

SMiLE Brian - If you're thinking about moving here, you should. It was a really hard transition for me at first, but now I love it. I'd be glad to help if you need it!

My family history there goes back to the early 19th century and I have visited many times. I just love the place !

Ha, that's a cheeky attitude, but you're right, froggy. I mean come on, we're talking about favorite cities! Not asking to share pages from Gabo's diary (if he ever got one).

And SB, you actually track your family history? Cool, I know nothing about this stuff, except that we have Polish roots.
