Title: Beach Boys Survivor #35 Winner: From There To Back Again
Post by: pixletwin on May 12, 2014, 07:40:13 AM
Finally here we are. The final regular round of Beach Boys Survivor. Please remember as we vote to respect other people's opinions. Lets have fun!

Quote
That's Why God Made the Radio is the twenty-ninth studio album by American rock band The Beach Boys, released on June 5, 2012 on Capitol. Produced by Brian Wilson, the album was recorded to coincide with the band's 50th anniversary, and is the first to feature original material since the release of Summer in Paradise in 1992.[2] The album is also the first to feature guitarist and backing vocalist David Marks since the release of Little Deuce Coupe in 1963. It is also the first Beach Boys album to be made since the 1998 death of lead guitarist and vocalist Carl Wilson and to feature both David Marks and Bruce Johnston.
Preceded by the single "That's Why God Made the Radio", the album reached number 3 on the Billboard 200 and was their highest charting studio album of new material since 1965, placing them second all-time with longest span of top 10 albums at 49 years (The Beatles would tie that record with On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2 the following year). Frank Sinatra holds the record at 52 years of top 10 albums.

As per the usual, vote off your LEAST FAVORITE track.

Tally will be on May 14th

The Private Life of Bill and Sue

My first vote is an easy one.

First Love had loads of truly great songs on it which Mike could have chosen for TWGMTR - alas, he chose this song instead and then made it even worse with a horrible, horrible backing track.

Doesn't sound anything like a Beach Boys song.

Besides the hideous drums, it sounds a lot like late 60s BBs when they were going for a super poppy sound - Darlin', Breakaway etc.

im not usually so critical - im just pissed tonight.  :p

Eric has a point about "Shelter" not really sounding like a Beach Boys track, but it's not as bad as a couple of others that do.  Or are supposed to.
Took me nearly a year to warm-up to this album.  Eventually I was able to put the auto-tune in the back of my mind and enjoy the melodies.  Some of the singing rises above it and feels real.  "Isn't it Time" sounded great last Winter - I Love the MIC single mix.  Especially when I'm up in the mountains with a fireplace going.  Good snuggle song.  The album starts off very strong, sags a bit in the middle, and closes strong.  That's the same one line review I've seen so often around here, and I have to agree.  It feels more like a Brian solo record, with Mike, Al and the others as guests.  Very hard for me to agree it's a real Beach boys album without Carl, but if you say so...I'll play.
Getting my Maxwell back out for this one:
Bang Bang  "Beaches in Mind"
I don't think too much about the beach when I listen to this record.  I always hit next when this one comes on.

TPLoB&S

Lyrics are a muddled mess, and although I guess it's not unprecedented in the BB catalogue-- is Brian commenting on reality TV any different than Brian gushing about a late-night show host?-- it still comes off as forced and it really doesn't feel like a Beach Boys song or sound like a Beach Boys song. It's the "Disney"-fied Brian melody and arrangement that has popped up periodically since Imagination. Blandest common denominator. Shelter is in the same boat, although that's more of an adult contemporary sound than a cartoon show theme song, as Bill & Sue resembles, in my opinion.

Rare for me not to like a Brian-centric BBs song, but this one just doesn't do much for me.

Shelter, without a doubt. Ghastly track!

Surprised for the votes for TATD. It's one of the best on the album - one of the few tracks which could honestly have appeared on one of their '60's/'70's albums without seeming out of place. I could picture it on Friends. Unlike Shelter or Bill & Sue or even the title track...

Not because it's short, or wordless, it's just that I just don't like it much. Sounds a little to me like they're about to break into "Stairway To Heaven".

There's a bit more to it than Shelter and Bill & Sue methinks... though the lyrics are far more atrocious than either of those.

I'll be incredibly astonished if it won't. I know how lots of you love "Summer's Gone" & "Pacific Coast Highway", but really, if there's 1 Survivor Round that should have sticker in early stages that reads "No contest", it is this one, with the track "From There to Back Again".

Really? Give me the album version of It's About Time over the rest of the album any day of the week...

"Private Life of Bill and Sue" gets my hammer/vote.  Hardly needs another.  Sounds like a re-make of "South American" - which is much, much better.
Listened to the album again last night.  It keeps getting better.  I'd now say there are only three weak tracks, and it looks like we are mostly in agreement on which three.  That's the way...always reassessing.
Also want to throw my hat in the ring for "From There to Back Again" - very mid-60's arrangement.   Love Brian's bit.  Al did a beautiful job.
This is headed for a great finish.  Right now I'm not sure what to vote as the best one.  Better give it another listen.

Best track on the album. Listened to the album twice this weekend and most of it sounded rather good, even Spring Vacation. My vote this round is Bill & Sue. A quirky Brian number that misses the mark a bit.

20 of us put on our steel toed boots and kicked Bill and Sue in their Private Life. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As per the usual, vote off your LEAST FAVORITE track.

Tally will be on May 20th

Think About the Days
That's Why God Made the Radio
Isn't It Time
Spring Vacation
Shelter
Strange World
From There to Back Again
Pacific Coast Highway
Summer's Gone

Round#1 - Beaches in Mind May 14
Round#2 - Daybreak Over the Ocean May 16
Round#3 - The Private Life of Bill and Sue

Though it's getting tough, my third vote remains an easy one.

Darlin'.. oops I mean Shelter.

I assume Bill and Sue is toast as of this round, but it's far from my least favorite here. It has a fun, snappy, laid-back sound, and I like the unusually jaded, unusually ironic 'la-la-la' background vocals in the chorus.

Plus, this is The Beach Boys singing a song musing about why people enjoy celebrity drama. That's just funny in itself.

Spring Vacation, which has grown on me enormously since the album's release.

After this I'll find it hard to decide which track to vote for next. The album tracks are in tiers from here on so have to judge between Radio, Time and Shelter. Not a lot between them.

A little sad to see Bill and Sue go, although it wouldn't have lasted much longer in any case.  I guess it is a little lightweight, but I can't get enough of those chorus vocals and the sax during the little bridge/refrain.

Aw, seeing TATD going this early would be a shame. It's a lovely little a cappella piece... short, but it's got a lot more soul than some of the other stuff here.

Yeah, one of the bigger eye-openers for me during these Survivor rounds is the surprise that many folks aren't keen on "Think About The Days." I had always thought there was a pretty solid consensus that this is a highlight. Not so, I guess.

No Shelter is strong enough to survive the onslaught of votes. (13) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

"Spring Vacation"  My notes from our listening party last Saturday:  pretty good, but not finals good - and that's where we're going.  Love the organ.
A lot of us are agreeing so far, but I like the "Isn't it Time" mix that's on MIC much better than the album version.  I listened to both that night while playing MIC disc 5 for the odds'n'ends round.  "That's Why God Made the Radio" too.  I guess it's the same mix, but the HDCD version sure sounds better.  Why isn't the album HDCD?

I guess it's the same mix, but the HDCD version sure sounds better.  Why isn't the album HDCD?

Just guessing, but I think the HDCD thing is at Mark Linett's request/influence. For example, the reissues produced and co-ordinated by Mark (ie, the Capitol era twofers) and BWPS/PSS/TSS are HDCD.  The reissues produced and co-ordinated by Cheryl Pawelski and Paul Atkinson  (Reprise/Caribou stuff) are not (this decision might have been up to Andrew Sandoval and Dan Hersh, who did the digital remastering).

Back to TWGMTR, the main technical influence on the scene seems to have been Joe T  :P, so possibly his decision - it was mastered by Bob Ludwig (who mastered BWPS for HDCD), so perhaps Joe decided HDCD unnecessary or he forgot to tick box on the order form.  I repeat, just guessin'.

Umm, Strange World.

The title track.

And jeez, I'm surprised to see anyone voting for "Isn't It Time" this early. It sounds fresh, kind of modern (in only good ways) and a little spontaneous in a way that nothing else on the album does and nothing else the band have done in decades does. Despite the nostalgic lyrics, it's probably the only thing on the album that feels like a good, newer band could have done it rather than a reunited band who are pushing 70 and are co-writing their album with other songwriters. Not sure if I stated that as well as I could, but hopefully you get what I mean. Might be my third or fourth favorite from the album.

Anyway, yeah, I vote for the song "That's Why God Made The Radio" which, while I like it, is the exact opposite of what I just described, maybe more so than anything else on the album. That combined with Jeff doubling the entire lead (why???) and a few really iffy lines take it down this far, for me. Again, I do like it, but not as much as most of the other stuff here.

Not my favorite track either, but it is far from "megaweak". It's a song that works well for both Brian's & Mike's voices and range. It has a pretty catchy chorus with nice vocals from both Al & Bruce.

Isn't It Time was fun in concert but it's just not a great song in my opinion. it's annoyingly repetitive and by the end, it's just enough already.

the lyric rewrite and re-recording did nothing to improve the song itself. (i'm looking at you Michael Edward)

the title track is a hell of a song. extremely well-written and extremely BRIAN regardless of what some have chosen to believe.

What you just described can also be said of Help Me Rhonda and number of other songs. Rock is repetitive. The reason that I like it is because of the singing. Everybody does a really nice job with each of their parts, even Jeff. ;)

Again my vote is for Summer's Gone. I don't think it's a bad song,  I just like the other songs more. Not a popular opinion, apparently. Who knows, maybe in a few years I'll hear something in Summer's Gone that will suddenly make me enjoy it more. It happens all the time to me. Example: only 2 weeks ago I started to really like Crack At Your Love from the '85 album. I never liked that song before, and now I can't stop listening to it. But back on track...yeah, Summer's Gone.

The title track.

All these votes for Think About The Days... Madness I tells ya! I remember when I first played the album, the opening track really blew me away and left me thinking 'Wow, have they really pulled this off??' Alas, by the triple whammy of Shelter/Daybreak/Beaches and a half ton of poorly electronically-enhanced vocals I realised the answer was 'No'. But for those gorgeous sixty or so seconds of TATD I honestly thought they had...

Perhaps what strikes me about Isn't it time being a weak track is the arrangement and production (especially the single version). The ukulele and bass don't work and the harmonies don't make it for me. It was weird to hear live, especially compared to TWGMTR, which they pulled off rather well on most occasions. [I've voted earlier]

Thanks for the reply Alan.  You are on the right track.  It's the projects Mark and his gang are involved in, at least since HDCD became available.  In most cases.  He is not calling every shot in the many, many issues and re-issues since the 80's.  I have a DDD BB '85 that sounds fantastic, and of course that's not HDCD.  I just think the two tracks from this on MIC sound better on my system.  I really seem to be in the minority liking the re-do version of "Isn't it Time" - that's for sure.
I've been researching the HDCD deal, but it's much too complicated to detail here on the Survivor Thread.  I'm going to either do a topic thread (something I've yet to do), or discuss here after the round is done.
.
As for a vote, it seems the instrumental dissatisfaction crowd has this wrapped up.
My vote is "Isn't it Time"

No more time to Think About The Days. (16) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

The title track.

There's a few nice things about it (the 'when I/antenna' line), but the unpleasant moments outweigh the good stuff: the horrible drum sound just before the final chorus, the awful bit at the start of the middle-eight when the guitar goes 'dowwwwww', Jeff's ghastly singing of the word 'God', or rather 'Gaaaahhhhhh-d'.

I quite like this song, and I don't mind the drums and Jeff's singing. But the auto-tune is hard to take (if it really was used), and the line "Spreading the Love and Sunshine to a Whole New Generation! Whole New Generation!!!" is cheesier and more cringeworthy than any of Bruce Johnston's songs he wrote for the Beach Boys.

the title track is actually quite adventurous in terms of composition. changes key several times throughout the song, similar to something like Girls on the Beach or This Whole World. it's classic Wilson.

Isn't It Time on the other hand just repeats the same few chords over and over and over.....

it was established here recently that Brian basically wrote the music and those other guys contributed lyrics. it's a great song with some not-as-great lyrics. pretty classic Wilson if you ask me.

I must have missed that. The last comments I read about it were still the:

`- Brian came up with the title over dinner with Millas, Peternik, Thomas and a DJ called Steve Dahl; When asked what he could hear (in his head) Brian described a '50s beat (like "Silhouettes on the Shade") with lots of modulations.

- Millas, Peternik, Thomas and Brian got together to work on it - Brian came up with the "Tune it in our latest star" bit. Millas and Peternik took it away and cooked up the demo, which JT said is quite different from the 2012 version to which Brian added parts and changed things around

- Brian always intended for it to be used on a BB album (apparently was one planned but didn't happen around this period '97/'98)`

It`s not in the same stratosphere as This Whole World anyway... :)

regardless of lyrics or production, the changes are quite impressive and modulations seamless

here's the quote from Ray Lawlor:
Quote
To be honest I was not around during the recording of the Beach Boys album at all ; I remember Brian fooling with that song in 1998 at the Chicago house at the piano ; I certainly remember the title part, the hook, the tempo, the chord changes and him banging on the piano but that's all. And the next time I heard it was the finished track.  I don't think he wrote much , if any , of the lyrics.

Never understood the point of view that it would have been a better choice of lead single than the title track. It's much less interesting, ambitious and striking.

So it has to be Isn't It Time, the blander of the bunch.

"That's Why God Made the Radio"--I like how inventive this song is for a single, but I think the production is way too neat (the guitar & organ just sound too cheez).

God may have made the radio but it took 18 smilers to vote it off. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

As per the usual, vote off your LEAST FAVORITE track.

Tally will be on May 30th

Round#5 - Spring Vacation May 22
Round#6 - Think About the Days May 24

PCH might be a better song than Isn't It Time. But I don't want a final round with just ballads, so I voted for PCH.  I'd like to see melancholia and positivity facing off in the final round. I'd like to see Summer's Gone vs. Isn't It TIme.

Isn't It Time we voted off Isn't It Time? (23) (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Here we go folks! The final voting round of the Beach Boys Survivor! Of the three remaining tracks, please vote for the one you think is YOUR FAVORITE, the MOST DESERVING of the slot in Super Survivor as the 35th SURVIVOR!

Tally will be on June 1st

From There to Back Again
Pacific Coast Highway
Summer's Gone

Round#1 - Beaches in Mind May 14
Round#2 - Daybreak Over the Ocean May 16
Round#3 - The Private Life of Bill and Sue May 18
Round#4 - Shelter May 20
Round#5 - Spring Vacation May 22
Round#6 - Think About the Days May 24
Round#7 - Strange World May 26
Round#8 - That's Why God Made the Radio May 28
Round#9 - Isn't It Time May 30

Pacific Coast Highway is nice... but really it's just a coda to From There To Back Again...

I love Summer's Gone. It's a great way to end the album. But I don't think it is the most interesting song.

I both Al and Brian's vocals on From There To Back Again. I love the chords. I loved how it feels like a couple different songs stuck together. I love it.

Plus it was a great book by JRR Tolkien.  :P

FTTBA FTW.

I think I'm gonna go with PCH.  It was the song that moved me most when I initially played the album.  The only thing that makes me reluctant is that is almost not a song, but a coda to FTTBA as pixletwin points out.  And I guess FTTBA has more to it to enjoy as you listen to it more and more.

But PCH is still so moving despite anything else.

To be honest anything will be a worthy winner at this stage.  Can't we just crown 'The Suite' as winner?  JT did say in an interview that dividing it into tracks was somewhat arbitrary anyway, right?

Regretably, I won't go From There To Back Again - a beautiful piece but I've always been a bit 50/50 about the - babada baba ba bada broadway show bit just before the mighty Al makes with the whistlin';

I've really come to appreciate Summer's Gone - initially thought it was a good closer, and in time it's become one of my favs.

But my vote goes to PCH - blows me away today as much as when I first heard it; subtle hints of Denny (just IMHO), pretty compelling tune.

"From There to Back Again" is absolutely wonderful and may well be the best composition on the LP.

But "Summer's Gone" is my absolute favorite and is the best at giving me that deep, visceral experience of connection and longing that very good art engenders.

"Summer's Gone," it is.

Summer's Gone doesn't quite land the emotional punch it's going for - From There to Back Again certainly does though. :)

I feel the opposite...so that's why I'm voting for "Summer's Gone". :)

(I don't mean to be morbid, but that's probably the first song I'll listen to when BW passes...)

Just re-listened to the album (for the first time in ages) and I'm now going to change my vote:

Summer's Gone (replacing From Here To Back Again, which has far more unpleasant autotune than I'd remembered)

Summer's Gone's emotion sounds a bit phoned in, put on for the sake of having a dramatic finale for the comeback album to appease critics. It's okay, but From There to Back Again brims with a certain type of magic that has otherwise laid dormant for a good 40 years. I can't see myself voting for anything but.

I don't mean to be morbid, but what if you die before Brian Wilson ? I wonder what Brian will listen to...
Actually, I probably meant to be morbid right there. I don't mean to be morbid is just an expression.

If I do die before him, maybe I'll have it arranged for a CD of some of my music to be sent to him...  :smokin

I get where you're coming from and if I hadn't read about both Brian's coming to terms with turning seventy years old (wondering to himself where the time went) and deciding to include a snippet of his last conversation with his dying brother in the lyric, I may have agreed.

But seeing as I did read all about that (and seeing as I'm willing to give Brian the benefit of the doubt that all of that is true), I have to conclude that "Summer's Gone" is absolutely heartfelt.

But I shouldn't stray too far off-topic.  I already cast my vote (and besides, no one is going to blame you for voting FTtBA). :)

Which lyric was inspired by his last conversation with Carl? That's something I hadn't heard before.

Unless I'm remembering it incorrectly, I believe one of the articles published around the time of TWGMTR's release mentioned that the lyric "It’s time to go/I’m thinking maybe I’ll just stay" was born of one of their final exchanges.

I wish I could link you to a source, but I can't recall exactly where we heard it.  Anyway, the gist was, there was a conversation which acknowledged that Carl's time was short, with Brian coming to terms with being the last Wilson brother left and finding the strength to carry on.

Edit:  I did some digging.  Jason Fine's "The Fragile Beach Boys Reunion" article.  Rolling Stone June 21, 2012 issue, pg. 57.  Charlie Sheen cover.

"The final segment of the suite, "Summer's Gone," started from a conversation Wilson had with his brother Carl shortly before he died.  (Wilson's mother had passed away two months earlier, and Brian was dealing with the fact that he might end up the last surviving member of the Wilson family.)

According to Thomas, Carl had planned to record a song for Imagination.  But when Brian visited, Carl told him "You know, Brian, I'm not going to be able to make it."  Brian's response was unusual.  "He told me his last words to Carl were 'I think I'm going to stay for a while.'"  says Thomas.  "I mean, what a weird and emotional thing to say: 'I know you've got to go, but I'm gonna stay for a while.'"

Edit 2:  Looks as though even while the cover states "The Fragile Beach Boys Reunion," the article is actually called "The Beach Boys' Last Wave."

Apologies for any confusion.

Whew . Possibly the most perfect final three in the entire Survivor series.

Having gone for FTT&BA throughout, I'm suddenly remembering hearing the album for the first time.

Summer's Gone. And with it, the finest band ever to grace rock and roll (until the next time!).

Pacific Coast Highway. A linking song that also stands alone despite its brevity. Still the tune from TWGMTR that has the heaviest emotional impact, for me anyway.

Me too.  Nice way to put it Moon Dawg.  Thanks for the link Generation42.  Now I will always be reminded of Carl more when I listen.  They are all beautiful, but my vote for the one I like best is:
"Pacific Coast Highway"

Pacific Coast Highway has closed with only 8 smilers traversing upon it.  (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Wonder what track will be the Ultimate Survivor; I'm betting on GOK. You, folks?

As always, I'd've hoped for Surf's Up (1971) but as it lost out in that round I'd be happy with There and Back, God Only Knows, ATiT, Cali Girls, Heroes… this band cut a decent track or two in their time…!
