Title: Beach Boys Survivor #33 Winner: Caroline, No with Timothy B. Schmit
Post by: pixletwin on May 12, 2014, 07:32:08 AM
This is the way the world Ends. This is the way the world Ends. This is the way the world Ends.

Not with a bang, but a whimper...

At least until That's Why God Made the Radio came out, most of us assumed that this would be the Beach Boys swan song.

Quote
Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 is the twenty-eighth studio album by American rock band The Beach Boys, released on August 19, 1996 on River North Records. Produced by both Joe Thomas and Brian Wilson, Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 is a collaborative album with various country musicians. Despite its Vol. 1 sub-title, the album is the band's only venture into the genre of country pop music, and is the last studio album to feature founding member Carl Wilson who died in 1998.

I am not sure how difficult to find this album is; here is a link to a few of the songs. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8B292A4F2EA6E853

As per the usual, vote off your LEAST FAVORITE track.

I Get Around.  Sounds like the lead singin' dude is suffocating - perhaps Brian accidentally turned off the air supply to the vocals booth.

Gonna agree with this … simply because BTTYS is one of my least fave BBs songs already.

Will have to sit most of this album's voting out. It's my least played BBs album of all and right now I'm 350 miles and 13 days from my disc. No way I'm gonna start searching for and listening to the thing on YouTube …

"Be True to Your School"  based on the artist.  I have heard Toby, 'nuff said, so won't go looking.  I saw the documentary years ago, I think on the old Nashville Network.  This is the only Beach Boys record I do not own.

I don't like Willy's version, not even a little bit. Sounds like he's sleep talking, like most everything else he sings. Willy always sings like he doesn't care, so why should I? ;)

I wish artists wouldn't cover HMR; the single version can't be bettered.

But then that itself was a cover overseen and produced the original artists and producer; then they covered it again for this album with an incerior lead vocal; and then the original lead vocalist covered it more than 45 years later for his own solo album too… wtf do I know?!?!?

I think the Beach Boys bettered HMR significantly in the early-70's with their bluesier arrangement. I think the MIC version with Dennis singing it is the best version in every way. But I can also see that this particular arrangement wouldn't be a hit single like the one that was.

This Thread gets so little attention that it's about to fall off the first page!
In the What If Department:  Maybe the boys should have looked around a bit more for artists with real talent, instead of some #1 Country Chart action, that none of their fans were listening to anyway.  Well, I take that back, I was.  I love country music, but this wasn't a good idea.  They didn't need to go looking for a new market.  This fan wanted  a new Beach Boys record.  I heard enough of it to know I wouldn't listen to it, and didn't buy it.  Not even in it's sure destination - the cut-out bins.  One less sure sale if they had put out something fresh.  Brian had new material that could have been worked on.  Or more classic oldies, please.  Carl, Mike and Al too.  Even Bruce must have had something.  This was a waste of time.
.
Another what if:  Lyle Lovett was just getting started in the mid-90's.  What a talent.  He put a version of "Long Tall Texan" on his The Road to Ensenada (1996) album.  It charted quite well.  Won the Grammy for Best Country album in 1997.  He was working with lots of famous cats like Randy Newman, and chances are he would have jumped at the chance to work with Brian.  One the other hand, Doug Supernaw was a fading act in 1996.  Only put out one more record, interestingly called Fadin' Renegade.
.
As John Manning said, these songs were not about to be bettered.  Brian himself tried it, and while I like those, they were not bettered.  There is one thing I like about this record.  An old friend of mine got the chance to work with Brian.  Michael Rhodes is the bass player.  He was a big star in my hometown, played in all the best local bands, before moving to Nashville to become a session cat.  This must be where he met Brian.  Perhaps through Joe, as that's where Michael seems to show up.  On Joe projects.  He's even on the 2012 sessions.
.
Okay, picks.  yeah, let's take out "Long Tall Texan" and even worse than ""HMR" - "Little Deuce Coupe"
Forgot to add my other favorite credit on this album:  The Jardine's, Matt, Drew and Robbie - handclaps and finger snaps.

Don't think you'll get a chance to wait.  It'll be long, tall, and gone back to Texas.  Nashville can be so cruel.

BTW, I dig Junior Brown's version of "409." That was my intro to Brown, and my husband discovered his music independently around the same time. We've seen him several times in concert -- he is one phenomenal guitarist.

This is going about how I expected.  Two more and we're at the final.
I like some of Junior's stuff, and he's a pretty good guitar player - but "409" won't do.  Lorrie does nothing for her track.  Man they picked the wrong artists for this record.
bang, bang, and bang again!  and one more bang in hopes that I'll never hear them again:
"409" - sorry Emdeeh, I've seen Junior live too - but he didn't do this one.  Guess he's broke down, south of Dallas.
and "Don't Worry Baby"
.
.
.
EDIT:  pixletwin,  I want to change one of my votes.
After shuting down last night I thought about something...Two posters, Emdeeh and Matt H, I think for the first time in this round said they actually Liked a song.  Let me honor that.
Change "409" to:
"I Can Hear Music"

Well, Caroline No sounds like the original. No country twist to it like many of the others. It shouldn't have been included. The Warmth Of The Sun; Willie just ruined an absolutely beautiful song. Just god-awful!

In that vain then, the best country version of a Beach Boys song goes to Junior Brown.

409

This is unusual to see my 3 favorites in the final round. These are the only three tracks I actually listen to for pleasure (and not out of obligation because the word "Beach Boys" happen to appear on the album cover) from this album.

My vote goes to The Warmth of the Sun with Willie Nelson.

Caroline No (just because it's the only song that ACTULLY has a Brian Wilson "Production" feel to it, also it's not country so that's another reason I vote for it...lol.. and the harmonies at the end are great!!!)

the background vocals really sound great. they took one of their best songs and improved upon it, in my opinion. and Jimmy Webb's string arrangement is pretty damn cool too. i'm not crazy about Schmit's lead, but the guy can sing.

First time vote in this thread.

IMO TWOTS is the only song someone has covered which might be considered to equal or surpass a Beach Boys original. The original from 1964(?) is stellar, but the age and experience of a lifetime adds more to it and Willie manages to pull that off without it being cheesy or insincere.

Cudos to Willie for making that work. The album is almost worth owning just because of that effort.

Also, it's hilarious when Mike embarrasses himself when telling Willie how to sing it and he just utterly dismisses him in the politest way  :-D

VOTE: THE WARMTH OF THE SUN

Not only is it one of the better compositions here, but the performance is tasteful AND it actually adds something new to the table with the backing vocals.  The Warmth of the Sun is also fairly decent, and would be my runner-up.  409 IMO is unpleasant, and it wasn't even that much of a song to begin with.

I have each BB album in triplicate if u include vinyl an multiple cd releases.  I have never owned or purchased or listened to more than a couple of cuts of this "album".     the worlds greatest pop/rock band descending to this level of need and repackaging has always induced vomiting.   doing backing vocals on carefully selected. Pieces of music is one thing, selling out to be on the coat tails of  some flash in the pan boot wearing sh*t kicking clowns is almost unforgivable.
