Title: Great Doo-Wop songs
Post by: Ron on May 07, 2006, 07:14:10 PM
Somebody help me make a list... I've been listening to Jan & Dean "Baby Talk" today and I love stuff like this... not necessarily your standard doo-wop but more of the stuff with interesting vocal rhythms "baaahhh, daaa bahhhh, daaaa oom whop oom whop oooom whop whop"  Usually bass vocals.

Stuff like "Blue Moon" etc.  Anybody got anymore that just kill them?  I'm trying to make a CD.

"Good To My Baby" comes to mind, but I want a whole CD of like 20 by everybody.

Suggestions?

"I Wonder Why" - Dion & The Belmonts works too.

Get a job - The Silhouettes (if I'm right)
Barbara Ann
Who put the bomb _ forgot the name

oh man, there are so many... Look at amazon or whatever after doo-wop. The 50s had very much of that

BTW:
Try "She's still talking baby talk" by jan & Dean

I love Dion. He’s coming to my town in August, and I hope he plays my personal favorite, “No One Knows”.

Also, if he played his 1968 self-titled album in it’s entirety, I think I’d soil myself. Love that record, and it is an absolute crime that it is not in print!

It's "Who Put the Bomp" by Barry Mann, one half of the famed Mann/Weil songwriting team. I agree with the song choice. I would also add the following:

"When You Dance" - The Turbans
"Tell Me Why" - RobRoys
"Tonight I Fell In Love" - Satins
"Tonight (Could Be The Night)" - The Velvets
"I Need Someone" - The Belmonts (after Dion)

Any doo-wop compilation damn well better have 'Speedo' by the Cadillacs.

Yeah, that one's good.  I've got to try the other ones listed.

more "bop"/doo-wop songs if you didn't know about them:

Jan & Dean: Tennessee, Sunday Kind of Love, Heart and Soul
Jennie Lee - Jan & Arnie [pre Jan & Dean]

Did anyone ever notice that the "bop bop a diddle it" on "Speedo" sounds a lot like the "bop bop a diddle it" on The Beach Boys' "Add Some Music To Your Day". The a capella version on the Hawthorne CD really brings it out...

If you can find a single copy of the Cadets Stranded in the Jungle get it.   The flip side, side B, has a tune called I Want You.  One of my all time favorite R&B "do wop" sort of songs.

There has to be hundreds of great songs like this lost out there on B sides, never to be heard again, even with the proliferation of music on CD.  Some of the better used record stores offer a chance to get ahold of some of the lesser known A sides of popular do wop and R&B groups.........as well as those B sides that never made it to albums.

@Summer_Days: Looks great. Are these the original recordings or re-recordings?

As far as I know, they are the originals. They sound downright vintage to me! Beautiful stuff.

Sure, it could use stuff like 'Gee', etc... but what's there makes fora good sampler. I'm still thinking about getting the Doo Wop box sets to satiate my appetite.

This for me is the greatest doo-wop song of all time----and one of the greatest 45s: "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos.

It is, very good.  Always sounds so sad to me, I don't think it's supposed to be, though.

A similar one that I always loved and thought was just smmmmmmokey was "You Belong To Me" by the Dufrees.... lots of others did it too.

The Dufrees did a great one called 'Have You Heard" too....

Very nice, those two. But "IOHEFY" is so unusual in comparison. Those three opening guitar chords seem to open up a door into another world of sound and colour. The middle-eight is relatively earthbound but the rest is like nothing else before or since. Those shoo-bop-shoo-bops call to mind much later vocal groups like The Dells----soul with a touch of aggro. I remember hearing the end as a child when it got a lone play on BBC Radio and it scared the hell out of me! That record is a law unto itself...

You're like hypehat, john. Smwr on the board he listed it his favorite doo wop song or some such. Search "flamingo" by user "hypehat".

For me, words "great" & "doo wop" don't go well together. It's like saying "ballet is exciting" (yaawn). Anyway, I do have favorite, ofc. I can find favorite in any genre. Lemme introduce the fabulous The Tokens! go to Youtube.

Not sure. I have it as a bonus track on a reissue of Florence's solo album. It's an older song, so there may be other good versions of it out there.

Not sure how much of this is reliable but it makes for an interesting read:

This Mary Wilson-led B-side from 1960 is pretty cool:

That flute reminds me of the alternative version of the Boys' "I'm So Young". Great piano too...

Lead by Earl Carroll, sings "...but my real name is Mr. Earl". After the Cadillacs would join the Coasters.

Here's one I was alerted to only today. "You" by The Aquatones features the dulcet tones of 17-year-old Lynne Nixon (see the wiki page). Their lone hit just missed the US top 20 in 1958. Truly wonderful stuff to melt the JK heart:

I do appreciate the early things but it's "baroque" doo wop that really does it for me, stuff like Jive Five's "My True Story":

Ritchie Valens's ballad "Donna" has always seemed to me to be doo wop sans vocal harmonies. It's just the mood it projects; and the guitar lines suggest voices:

Check out "Ten Commandments of Love" by The Moonglows. I consider it to be one of the few truly "perfect songs"(It's on par with God Only Knows, a few Beatles songs, etc). I was absolutely blessed to be able to witness Harvey Fuqua(who sang on the original record) and his Moonglows group perform this song in person.

What I've heard of their other stuff wipes the floor with most other doo wop material but "IOHEFY" is in a field of one, in any context. So thanks for the recommendation, Jay, but I'll do my stick-in-the-mud act (again) and stick with that one otherworldly song--a little world all of its own which on entering you just don't want to leave--or I don't anyway. ::)

I totally agree about  IOHEFY! I consider it one of the greatest records of all time, by anybody. "Otherworldly" is definitively a great word to describe it. The whole mood of the song is quite eerie to me. And that high voice echoing in the background is downright hair raising! It's best listened to in the dark. But I also love "Golden Teardrops", and "Plan For Love".

These are Lincoln Fig and the Dates (what's in a name?) singing "Way Up" (year unknown). If the group's name isn't bizarre enough, how about the first verse?

"Wo-o-o-ohhhhh
Way up in the sky
There is the girl I love
She kicked the bucket, she die"

What???!!!  :o Lovely song though...
