Title: Summer's Gone vocal
Post by: Wylson on April 29, 2014, 03:04:25 AM
I was just listening to Summer's Gone, and something struck me about Mike's vocal - where he joins in with Brian at the end of some lines. It's quite a strange and very nice counterpoint, but it got me wondering if maybe it is accidental. I wonder if it is the product of Mike having a stab at the full lead vocal, and then Brian re-doing it but leaving some of Mike's parts in. Anyway just a random musing!

I think one of the things I would change about TWGMTR is the occasional intervention of stack o' vocal Jeff Fosketts very so often. It just slightly disrupts the flow and is a shame as when the BBs really go for it on the album it really pays off.

Can anyone confirm Mike's actual lyrics here?

I have bolded the lyric you may be posting about:

Quote
Summer's gone
Summer's gone away
Gone away, with yesterday.

Old Friends have gone
They've gone their separate ways
While dreams hold on
For those who still have more to say.

Summer's gone
Gone like yesterday
The nights grow cold, it's time to go
I'm thinking maybe
[Brian] I'll just change.
[Mike] I should stay.

Another Summer gone.

Summer's gone
It's finally sinking in
One day begins, another ends.
I live them all and back again.

Summer's gone
I'm gonna sit and watch the waves
We laugh, we cry,
We live then die
and dream about our yesterday.

The difference seems to emphasize one's decision to move on and change, while the other is content to stay where they are.

Accidental?

Definitely not.

All I know is that through all the years of mud they've drug each other through, they will always need each other, and it's none more clear than it is here on this song.

Joe Thomas (or whomever mixed it) should have panned that Mike part slightly to the left or right, so you can hear what both Mike and Brian are singing clearly. Unfortunately, the end result is a bit jarring with two voices stacked on top of each other singing the same melody, but different words.

There is precedent for it though - the chorus of "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" ("where I'm at" and "very sad").

Love the Mike vocal there.

Lots of depth in the TWGMTR tracks. A shame the credits on record were such a mess -- I'd love to see the breakdowns of who sang and played what throughout the album.

I can imagine Elliott Smith singing Summer's Gone.

I wonder why it's not on more people's top 10 post-1980 lists, is it the Jon bon Jovi thing?

Damn, you're right. Thinking of Elliott singing it makes me kinda sad.
