Title: Beach Boys Survivor #32 Winner: Lahaina Aloha
Post by: pixletwin on April 28, 2014, 11:38:26 AM
Bear with me folks. We are almost out of the DARK AGES for the Beach Boys.

Quote
Summer in Paradise is the twenty-seventh studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released on August 3, 1992 on Brother Records. Produced by Terry Melcher, it has been described as the band's critical and commercial low point.[1] The Beach Boys did not record another album of original material until That's Why God Made the Radio in 2012.
Summer in Paradise was left out of Capitol's Beach Boys re-issue campaign in 2000 and 2001, and is currently out of print.

We need to catch up with rounds #29 and 30 so we are going to begin by VOTING OFF TWO TRACKS per round.

Tally on the 30th!!!

Hot Fun in the Summertime
Surfin'
Summer of Love
Island Fever
Still Surfin'
Slow Summer Dancin' (One Summer Night)
Strange Things Happen
Remember (Walking in the Sand)
Lahaina Aloha
Under the Boardwalk
Summer in Paradise
Forever

My least two faves on this one are easy: FOREVER and SURFIN'.

I almost feel like "Summer of Love" should win.

Forever is hands down my favorite song on this album. If you hear it as a cover instead of a remake, it's really not that bad at all.

No way should Forever go out before these two trainwrecks.  It still contains the same basic melody as the original.  If anything, it's more along the lines of iffy covers of classic songs like Hot Fun in the Summertime.

This album will be hard because nearly all the tracks are so horrible it's hard to single them out. Most problematically, I hardly ever listen to this album (though I've listened enough to know it's not worth further listens) so I don't have enough familiarity with the tracks to specify which one is more objectionable than the next. I probably won't vote in many more rounds on this one simply because I can't.

But I definitely vote for Surfin' -  that one definitely stands out to me as the worst.

My second vote goes to whichever song is the Bruce Johnston one (Slow Summer Dancing, right)? I remember a Bruce song here that was even worse than She Believes in Love Again which I hardly thought possible.

Perhaps we should have a vote on whether we should do a Stars and Stripes round?

In my opinion, I don't think it's a good idea. It's basically a Country-themed remake of the Beach Boys classics from the 60's, and the Beach Boys themselves are only on backing vocals here.

Where to begin...a record that Stamass was allowed in to the sessions.  And on the concert stage.  I was left to wonder, why Carl?
So first, let's get rid of  the horror that is "John's disrespectful version of forever"
and...many to choose from, "Summer of Love".
I actually still own this "record" - cover's nice.

Nah. No voted needed. It's a studio album featuring the Beach Boys. Co-produced by the Beach Boys. People may not like it, but it's a Beach Boys album... just thankfully not the FINAL Beach Boys album.

Agree with the last bit. John as a Dennis fan did fine job with the song.

My votes are for abysmal "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" & "Slow Summer Dancin' (One Summer Night)", even though I like the chorus.

Interesting, I find Slow Summer Dancin' to be the best song off this album (though it's still not a good song). And though the cover of Remember is quite awful (especially Mike's part), Carl's vocals redeem it as one of the better songs off this album.

Tbh, I don't like Carl's vocs here, either, he sounds too forced, plus you forget the long ear-attacking saxophone solos. I barely tolerated it in Kokomo, here it's thousands times worse.

Forgot about the saxophone solos. Some of the worst I've ever heard. Makes Kokomo sound like a masterpiece.
Carl's vocals don't sound too forced to these ears, plus it's always great to hear a late period Carl vocal, as in only a few years he'd be gone.

For me, there's one pretty easy choice for this one.  Granted the album is bad, but all I have to do is turn to a contemporary top 40 and all of a sudden SIP doesn't bother me as much.

some of it's not as funny as the rest, but it all sucks.

Replace funny with awful and I'd agree

the sax solo on SIp is th worst, I wish I could hear the Uk bruce version.

Yes, the UK version of the title track isn't nearly as bad as the US version.

As for Forever, I hate how the most famous version to the general public is not the original Dennis Wilson classic, but the crappy John Stamos version  >:(

Huh, didn't know that Bruce Willis did a version (if he really did it and this isn't a joke).
If he did, I'll check it out. But expectations are not high.

Checked out the Bruce Willis version and was pleasantly surprised. He's certainly not a bad singer, and his version isn't too bad. A lot better than I expected.
That said, I'd put it above the Beach Boys version and below the original and the Stones version.

12 Votes were found Under the Boardwalk (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

9 for Hot Fun in the Summer Time. (I can't even be arsed to make up something). (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

We need to catch up with rounds #29 and 30 so we are going to begin by VOTING OFF TWO TRACKS per round.

Tally on the May 6th!!!!

Island Fever

As if it's anything of interest? Sure, no one really cares about whether you make up sth. or not. You know, we here are for voting off least fave track.

Charming.  And speak for yourself - I find the pithy to desperate poll tags and the school boyish song title augmentations much more interesting than the puerile opinions and other quite trying commentary offered by some.

Don't they play the Drifters and Sly in hell?

Title: Re: Beach Boys Survivor #32: Summer In Paradise

Not as bad as so many make it out to be. I could easily name worse. Bought it the day before Hurricane Andrew battered South Florida in '92 and played it continuously thru the storm. It then became our summer soundtrack for a few years when we'd vacation up at Cocoa Beach. Thought at the time that it sounded like the Beach Boys' swan song, the title track reminding me of Let it Be.

Should have opened with Island Fever's invitation to "get away." Surfin' - definitely an improvement over the original...didn't know the little fella had it in him. Summer of Love? Stupid, goofy and funny. Guess you have to be SoCal to get it. Was cool to see Surfer Joe resurface. Last we'd heard he'd gone off to Pendleton for a hitch with Uncle Sam's boys. Don't get the reference to the lady we once used to know...somebody help me with that. And I like the direct vocal harmonic quote from Don't Worry Baby. One Summer Night works just fine with your baby in your arms, swaying to the music at a southseasidebeachfronthideaway - try it, you'll like it! And, of course, Strange Things recalls that Pisces Lady so Funky Pretty, and I love the extended fade.

uh oh...battery is low

Ok. Plugged in again, so where was I? Yeah, Side Two -

Really like that extended fade into Remember Walking in the Sand. Who did that originally? I'm thinking the Shangr Las.

Lahaina Aloha gets some pretty good press, I guess for Carl's vocal delivery, but I'm sure a song about a one night stand is just beyond the pale. I mean, we're talking rock n roll here, not some degenerate art...well, never mind.

What's left? Under the Board Walk...a great old tune given a respectable interpretation, better I'd say than the Stones, which is I admit a stretch, but then I didn't care much for their reworking of Just My Imagination. In, fact, I'd say their best work was all done before 1966 - same as the Beach Boys (except for PS and GV of course)

They should have stuck Kokomo here just before the title track, which by the way sounds pretty good live with the added verses. And the burning sax reminds me of Gato so it's ok - everyone can't be Coltrane

So, I guess I like the album, my perception colored no doubt by the fond memory of that time and place in the early 90's.

But Hot Fun better than Sly...? I mean...really now...you've got to be...

The lyrics to "Summer in Paradise" are either Mike's worst or a brilliant self-parody.  I still remember the first time I heard the album, when I heard the line:
"Surfer's recycle now, don't you know
Like everyone from California to…"
there was just enough time in that pause for me to think "Oh, for the love of God, don't say…" before Mike finally said "Kokomo."

In any case, Jardine's vocal on "Strange Things Happen" is probably the second best vocal performance on the album, after his own turn on the chorus of "Slow Summer Dancing (One Summer Night)," but they still aren't good enough to overcome the song's other weaknesses in bad TM-inflected lyrics and a dull melody.  Which means I'll have to vote for "Lahaina Aloha."

Having just had the pleasure of listening to two of the remaining three tracks (iPhone shuffle) during a very long drive (okay, long by UK standards!), I have to say I'd forgotten how bad the title track was, and how good Lahaina Aloha is. Didn't have the pleasure of Strange Things happen but my overall preference is now for Lahaina Aloha. The live version of SiP rocks, but the studio version sounds like a first-ever run-through, stilted and stiff by comparison to the live track.

Lahaina Aloha has my vote.

Great summation of this record Zach, but after listening to most of it a few days ago - I had to, as it had gotten that I couldn't remember which ones were truly "the worst," I found some were worth mentioning.
I own the American copy.  Remember "Walking in the Sand" is okay.  "Hot Fun in the Summertime" was much better live, yes I was still going to some of their shows in 1992 and 1993 (in Concord, CA - the last time I saw the band with Carl, Stamos made me want to vomit my snack).  Some of it was great (lowercase) though.  Thank goodness Carl started recording with Gerry and Robert - a much better end to his career.
The originals, "Island Fever" "Strange Things Happen" and the one that gets my vote as "best" here - "LAHAINA ALOHA"
Hawaii is a nice place to visit.  I tried to live there in 1970-'71, but left after four months.
You know, I was reading something Rei posted this morning that said Mike took control of the band in 1978.  Maybe for M.I.U., but not after that - not on record anyway.  Until this record, yeah, this was Mike's Beach Boys.  Carl stepped back and went along with it.  I've never been sure why.  I still listen to Mike's other projects (Looking Back With Love is okay in my book, and the Celebration albums - I still play them), but this...  Let's have a Mike song win this round.

I have posted a few times about Mike Love taking over the band with 15 Big Ones in the past (with Love You, L.A. Light Album, and the 85 album being the exceptions. Coincidence that those are the 3 above-decent albums to come out of that period?), and I did post a few times this morning.
But I didn't post about this topic this morning. You must have got me mistaken for someone else.

Rei,  It's in the Wikipedia = Wrinkles thread, where you proudly put up a link (the first one) to a simplistic, ridiculous/gossip rag like piece, mostly about their personal lives.  tragic - in a world where Denny's POB is held in as high regard as "the best of The Beach Boys records," and only Denny's record gets any mention in the field of solo/other projects that any Beach Boy took part in.  The article needs that "Wiki Magic" of which they speak - and quick.  You said you were "modifying" it.  So you must have read it.  I see you now have exceptions, maybe those should be noted in the article.  I'm fixing to shut down my board wandering for the night, but will try and post a reply there tomorrow.

Ohh... well it isn't really a gossip rag or whatever, it's just information on the band. And I didn't write anything about Mike Love and the Decline Of The Beach Boys, it was already there when I made some touch-ups. It does need more of a touch-up, I just added more information and corrected some incorrect information. Which is why I posted it on the Wikipedia = Wrinkles thread, so people from here can also contribute to that and touch up the page. Because TV Tropes is a very popular site, and the Beach Boys page needs a well-deserved fix-up!

Nah, Mike wasn`t in charge of KTSA either (his solo songs that were considered were all omitted).

Mike only really took over when Terry Melcher became producer and even then he wasn`t in complete charge as Al and Brian both had songs on Still Cruisin`.

3 smilers should abstain from "touching" their baby.(http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

4 smilers took Mike's advice to bring back Summer in Paradise. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

And the winner (overwhelmingly so) with 20 votes...

Lahaina Aloha

Round#1 - Surfin' April 30
Round#1 - Summer of Love April 30
Round#2 - Forever May 2
Round#2 - Remember (Walking in the Sand) May 2
Round#3 - Hot Fun in the Summertime May 4
Round#3 - Under the Boardwalk May 4
Round#4 - Still Surfin' May 6
Round#4 - Slow Summer Dancin' (One Summer Night) May 6
Round#5 - Island Fever May 8
Round#6 - Strange Things Happen May 10
Round#6 - Summer in Paradise May 10

3 fresh (and final) threads of Beach Boys Survivor begin tomorrow.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END!!!  :o

Even if it was voted as the best song off SIP, I still think it's an awful song  ;D

Really surprised Lahaina Aloha won. I've listened it two or three times, it's completely forgettable. Summer In Paradise and STH are both miles ahead of it.

Lahaina Aloha was the obvious winner even if it is ruined by the drum heavy production. It says a lot for the stupidity of the group around this time that the best songs on SiP and BB85 were never performed in concert, to my knowledge.

01. Slow Summer Dancin' (One Summer Night).
Aren't you a sentimental sap, after that? Half of your top choices were quite shoulder-raising, this one esp.

Well, even the best songs off SIP are far below-average lol
