Title: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: busy doin nothin on May 05, 2006, 09:10:04 PM What would you pick as the best Beach Boys song written by each member of the group aside from Brian (not counting songs co-written with Brian)?
My picks would be: Al -- Looking at Tomorrow Bruce -- Disney Girls Mike -- Big Sur Ricky/Blondie -- Hold on Dear Brother Carl -- Long Promised Road Dennis -- this is the toughest choice for me -- too many great songs; I guess I would pick "Forever" Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: Sheriff John Stone on May 05, 2006, 09:27:50 PM Mike - "Brian's Back"
Al - "California Saga" Bruce - "Disney Girls" ( but my favorite is "Nearest Faraway Place") Carl - "Where I Belong" ("Heaven" is his best overall) Dennis - "Cuddle Up" Blondie/Ricky - "Here She Comes" Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: Surfer Joe on May 05, 2006, 09:49:39 PM Agree with most of the Sheriff's picks:
Mike - "Brian's Back" (since "All I Wanna Do" is ineligible) Al - "California Saga" (just let the Sheriff pick that one for me since "At My Window" is ineligible) Bruce - "Disney Girls" (but my favorite is "Dierdre") Carl - "Feel Flows" Dennis - "You And I" (solo album; from the BBs I like "Baby Blue" and "Angel Come Home") Blondie/Ricky - "Here She Comes" I've brought this up as a thread of its own before: when you get past Brian and Dennis, it gets pretty slim. Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: peerke on May 05, 2006, 11:00:42 PM 'All This Is that'
Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: NimrodsSon on May 06, 2006, 04:38:15 AM Mike - "Big Sur"
Carl - "Feel Flows" (or "Our Sweet Love" if that counts. I'm not sure how much of it he wrote.) Dennis - Too many to choose from--like trying to choose my favourite Brian track, which I can't. Bruce - either "Dierdre" or "Brand New Old Friends" Al - "California" or "At my Window" Ricky/Blondie - "Leaving This Town" Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: punkinhead on May 06, 2006, 07:24:38 AM Mike- Big Sur (Landlocked)
Carl- Feel Flows Al- Lady Lynda Dennis- be with Me Bruce- Disney Girls Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: Jonas on May 06, 2006, 09:41:33 AM It's hard to JUST pick one, but at the moment I'll go with:
Bruce: Tears in the Morning Ricky/Blondie: Here She Comes Dennis: Celebrate the News / Mona Kani Carl: Trader Al & Mike: Transcendental Meditation Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: Jason on May 06, 2006, 10:31:21 AM Hard Times is a great Blondie/Ricky track.

Al - Susie cincinatti Mike - Big Sur (Original) Dennis - Its a new day Carl - Feel flows Bruce - Deirdre and Al and Mike - Don't go near the water Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: Surfer Joe on May 06, 2006, 02:20:24 PM Good call on "It's A New Day"- that's a fabulous piece of work. Should have been on the solo album.
Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: al on May 06, 2006, 03:47:12 PM Best non Brian track

Best other Al - California Mike - not much choice here...it can only be Big Sur Carl - Long Promised Road Dennis - End Of The Show Bruce - Disney Girls Blondie & Rickie - Leaving This Town. Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: punkinhead on May 07, 2006, 03:37:52 AM Really? you're like the first person I've heard that likes it. I think I like it, but I'm also guilty of feeling sorry for the song & really wanting to like it and giving it credit.
Good Lord How she Boogled it! Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: Jason Penick on May 07, 2006, 11:16:53 AM Al - Looking Down the Coast/ Monterey
Bruce - Brand New Old Friends Carl - Feel Flows Dennis - way too many, can't pick just one Mike - Big Sur (the first version) Ricky/ Blondie - hard to choose, but I really like Get Your Mind Made Up Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: Roger Ryan on May 08, 2006, 09:30:38 AM Dennis - "You And I" (solo album; from the BBs I like "Baby Blue" and "Angel Come Home") Actually, "Angel Come Home" is written by Carl (although lead vocal is by Dennis). Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: Surfer Joe on May 08, 2006, 10:59:15 AM Yeah, I get mixed up on that one. At some point I had thought it was co-written by the two of them, can't remember why I was confused on that. Great song, though.
Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: rb on May 08, 2006, 12:08:09 PM Suzie Cincinatti makes me go 'Meh.' Original Big Sur is cool, way cooler than the other one. Looking At Tomorrow is OK. Trader is alright, though the lyrics are a bit dopey. Hold On Dear Brother is good, if a bit sub-Elton John. All This Is That is quite good, though I think the arrangement is what really makes it so. Disney Girls is Bruce's best. Can I give a shout-out to San Miguel? I think that Dennis was really firing on all cylinders there.
Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: punkinhead on May 08, 2006, 12:23:27 PM ever heard the re-working of San Miguel that dennis did for perhaps plans for Bamboo? it's a bit slower and seems like a great jam. i love it!

I think I like it, but I'm also guilty of feeling sorry for the song & really wanting to like it and giving it credit. Yeah, I think it's a really catchy, rockin' song. The lyrics are a little cheesey, but in a good way.Good Lord How she Boogled it! Title: Re: Best Non-Brian Compositions Post by: Peadar 'Big Dinner' O'Driscoll on May 09, 2006, 08:58:36 AM Mike - Big Sur
