Title: Beach Boys Survivor #31 Winner: Somewhere Near Japan
Post by: pixletwin on April 17, 2014, 11:11:26 AM
Welcome back to a new round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR. Remember to be respectful of others opinions. Please don't spam the thread with too much opinionating (a little is ok  :D ).... and without further ado...

We won't be including the previously released track on side two.

Quote
Still Cruisin' is the twenty-sixth studio album by The Beach Boys, their thirty-fifth official album (counting compilations and live packages), and their last release of the 1980s. It is also the last album of new material released during a brief return to Capitol Records.
Still Cruisin' was left out of Capitol's Beach Boys re-issue campaign in 2000 and 2001, and is currently out of print.

As usual vote for your least favorite track. The track with the most votes gets voted off.

Tally on April 19th

Still Cruisin'
Somewhere Near Japan
Island Girl
In My Car
Kokomo
Wipe Out
Make It Big

My least favorite is Make It Big... tries to rock like Van Halen.. ends up sounding like an 80's infomercial.

There are no great works of art here, but most of the songs are at least enjoyable, which is more than I can say about BB85 or SIP. A somewhat underrated album: it's not that good, but it's fun. With that in mind I vote for the IMO least catchy song:

In My Car.

Alright, I am gonna jump back in on this one. While I agree with pixletwin about Make It Big, I still like it more than some of the other candidates. So, I'm voting off Wipeout.  I like Wipeout as a novelty, but in all reality it is The Fat Boys with Brian Wilson.

Only the Beach Boys in title only. It's a Fat Boys song that Brian guested on. By the way, just about all of the 1980s music is "processed crap", The Beach Boys (85) was the beginning for them, but that was the trend back then.

Make It Big is a challenge, in either this version or in the different mix from the movie intro.

I almost went Wipe-Out, but I once listened to the extended 12" mix - it gets a bit hypnotic after the 169th or so wipe-it-out-wipe-out recitation; which makes up for a couple of the other short comings

Not to mention that Make It Big is irresistibly catchy, with or without the 80's production. In fact, I quite like the song as it is (bar the lyrics), but then again I have better tolerance for 80's production than a lot of people.

Current lack of votes is possibly less about Ko-Mo being popular and more about how dire the other tracks are.

Kokomo  ::)

Surprised at it's popularity here, I though it was one of the more hated Beach Boys tracks!

I think the reason why many Beach Boys fans dislike 'Kokomo' is because it sounds too "plastic" and too, well, 80s. But the same thing goes for every other song on this album. And composition-wise, 'Kokomo' certainly isn't one of the weaker songs on 'Still Cruisin''.

I tend to like all these songs but.....

Island Girl   This song suffers in part because it has the same title as a classic Elton John hit!

Island Girl =  Not classy enough for 19 smilers. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

FINAL THREE. VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE!!!!!

Tally on April 27th

Still Cruisin'
Somewhere Near Japan
Kokomo

Round#1 - Wipe Out April 19
Round#2 - Make It Big April 21
Round#3 - In My Car April 23
Round#4 - Island Girl

My vote for Survivor has to go towards.... Kokomo. Love it or hate it. It's the perfect party song.... if you are around a bunch of Filipinos.

For me it comes down to Kokomo and SNJ, the latter making zero impression on me in 1989 but which in recent years has become a favorite track from their later years.  Kokomo, however, I highly resented in 1988 for going to #1 while "Love and Mercy" and Brian's impressive solo debut went largely unbought and unloved by the public.   I am no Mike Love fan, but much later (despite overexposure via radio, concerts and every Mike Love interview) I came to grudgingly acknowledge he contributed an irresistably catchy hook and an atypically smooth, non-nasal vocal.  Add Carl Wilson magic on the chorus, and it's understandable why it's one of their most popular tracks.  So to my surprise, I am voting for:

Kokomo

"Kokomo" - a track I have enjoyed since first release.

With only 5 votes, Still Cruisin' crashed almost before it left the starting line. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

Apparently only 13 smilers know a litle place called KOKOMO. (http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/images/smilies/survivor.gif)

And with a landslide 22 votes, the winner of the thirty-first round of BEACH BOYS SURVIVOR IS....

Somewhere Near Japan
[/b]

Round#1 - Wipe Out April 19
Round#2 - Make It Big April 21
Round#3 - In My Car April 23
Round#4 - Island Girl April 25
Round#5 - Still Cruisin' April 27
Round#5 - Kokomo April 27

Although short lived, this edition of Survivor was a good one.

BBS#32 starts tomorrow.

Things went surprisingly predictable here (with the exception of the high placing of Kokomo). A mildly interesting round.

Here's how I'd personally rank Still Cruisin' (bar the 3 older songs of course)

07. Wipe Out.
06. Kokomo.
05. Island Girl.
04. In My Car.
03. Somewhere Near Japan.
02. Still Cruisin'.
01. Make It Big.

I think the top two here went the only way they could have gone. Kokomo may have been heard too often by a lot of people but it is still clearly superior to most of the new songs.

SNJ would work better in a 3 minutes or less version.

Anyway, doubt it will break the bottom 5 in Ultimate BB Survivor

I like the single version, it cuts a bit of the fat out and makes the ride a touch more interesting, even if it is a bit heavier on the '80s cheese.
