Title: california barbie - Barbie
Post by: bringahorseinhere? on April 15, 2014, 09:39:09 PM
ok.... before anyone says, I did try the search button.... but again, had no luck on this topic...

this record released in 1987 states the song by The Beach Boys....

clearly its a Brian/Landy moment, so how did that become a 'Beach Boys' project??.... even using the BB logo?

did the guys approve? or what?.....

what the hell was going on here to have a Wilson/landy project released as The Beach Boys in 87?

Quoted from the (excellent) Bellagio 10452 site:

http://www.esquarterly.com/bellagio/1987.html

Quote
Dec. 1987:   Mattel Toys make a new addition to their Barbie range, California Dream Barbie, whose packaging includes a 5" flexidisc credited to The Beach Boys entitled "Livin' Doll", a Wilson/Landy Morgan composition. The track is actually a Brian solo performance based on an earlier song, "Christine".

The Barbie (Living Doll) flexi was mentioned a few times on this board, but apart from the above, no further info seems to be available.

And for the more serious collector: there's 2 variations of the flexi single: light blue with dark blue print, and dark blue with pink print

Brian gave an interview to Rolling Stone at the time that was released. I recall him saying something about how he was convinced to do it because it would help improve some little girl's childhood. He had a bad childhood, and he wanted to make children happy by doing a flexidisc record enclosed in a Barbie doll package.

It's not really a unique case, 'In My Car' is a Wilson/Landy thing but was also released as a Beach Boys song. Difference is that at least 'In My Car' got some other BB voices overdubbed.
